  • Review for the BIG BLUES FESTIVAL @ the Atkinson, Southport, Merseyside - Oct 2017
Review for THE BIG BLUES FESTIVAL @ The Atkinson, Southport, Merseyside - Oct 2017 https://www.theatkinson.co.uk/special-event/big-blues-festival-2017/ Another excellent 'Big Blues Festival' this year, at the highly acclaimed Atkinson Arts Centre in the centre of Southport. Held over two days, it gave a good variety of blues based artists on three stages. Friday Young and talented 'Benjamin Bassford' from Mansfield opened the Festival on the Theatre Stage. Ben earned his place on the main stage after winning the vote from last year's Little Blues Acoustic Stage, sponsored by Blues Matters magazine. Playing a mix of excellent self penned numbers of blues and acoustic roots, he showcased his guitar skills on resonator and acoustic guitar as well as his superb vocal talent. The audience were well entertained and he is an ambassador for the youth of blues roots. Benjamin Bassford - photo courtesy of Jan Fialkowski https://www.benjaminbassford.com/ Upping the tempo on the Theatre Stage were the brilliant jump jive rockers 'The Revolutionaires', a high energy six piece band from the Northeast. Fronting the band on vocals, guitar and harmonica was the charismatic, full on performer, Ed Stephenson. With plenty of brass input from trumpets, excellent keys and upright bass, they gave their own individual take on 1950's rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and played a mix of classics from Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Etta James, Big Joe Turner and more. They certainly were a crowd pleasers and it was a great way to finish the evening. The Revolutionaires - photo courtesy of Jan Fialkowski http://www.the-revolutionaires.co.uk/ Saturday Opening on the Little Blues Acoustic Stage in the foyer was 'Stoney Broke'.

  • Louis Armstrong 'All Stars' Just Didn't Seem As Interesting As He Came to Be More and More a Solo Artist with a (1901-1971) Backing Group
Newsletter No. 8 August 2001 BUMPER The voices of our past are still our greatest teachers SUMMER ISSUE out of interest after the 'Hot Seven' days and his Louis Armstrong 'All Stars' just didn't seem as interesting as he came to be more and more a solo artist with a (1901-1971) backing group. A Personal Recollection by Denis Cooper But, not withstanding, when he came to the Empire Hall in 1956 (I think) I was there dragging editor Keith's sister along. After what seemed an eternity of dreary warm-up acts the band came on and started to play 'When it's sleepy time down South’. Suddenly a small smartly dressed figure in a blue suit ran up from under the stage and joined in, immediately drowning everyone else. The audience erupted with cheers and whistles even though the acoustics were dreadful - imagine sitting in an oversized cooking pot with the lid ajar! I went to Macs, 100 Oxford Street later that week to see Chris Barber where Louis came in and It was in 1950 that I first heard of jazz - there used played quite a few numbers with them and that to be a program called Jazz Hour on the radio with was a lot better. I can't remember all the titles but a bit of Duke Ellington as an intro. I thought it was 'Basin St Blues' and 'Way Down Yonder in New great but a schoolmate told me it was slush! Then Orleans' were in there. I heard Jelly Roll Morton's 'Dr Jazz' and I was struck all of a heap – “sent” they called it.
