EPs and statistics have always been desirable to the record collector, and no definitive book on every EP issued has ever been published. Vintage Records did issue the long deleted “Collectable EPs” (published in 1982) of British EPs, but this was a personal selection chosen by the long gone London record shop, but does contain what they consider over 3700 vintage obscurities. The “British Hit EPs” book I consider as a bolt-on reference book to “Collectable EPs” which focuses on the hit EPs only. The source gleaned from the Record Retailer, Music Week, Record Mirror and New Record Mirror, therefore the combination of the two books does provide a comprehensive guide for the EP researcher. “British Hit EPs” contains a brief history of the EP which is interesting reading, but the “Technical Notes” and the “How The Information is Presented” do need some digesting before ploughing into the data. The EPs are listed per artist in alpha order showing all their releases, issue dates and track listing, and every page has photos, this section finishes at page 132.

The main feature is on Ral Donner; it's a fascinating story and shows that Donner was far more than an artist who hung on Elvis's coattails. He was a major talent in his own right. As always, the feature is lavishly illustrated with artist photos, a full discography, and countless label shots. The magazine also includes, inter-alia, articles about Dennis Herrold (Hip Hip Baby) and an update on the Buck Trail story. There is a gig review of October's Hemsby weekender. These features are all in English. Woodies in the UK or Eire wanting a copy should contact Dickie Tapp: [email protected]. • Review for the BIG BLUES FESTIVAL @ the Atkinson, Southport, Merseyside - Oct 2017
Review for THE BIG BLUES FESTIVAL @ The Atkinson, Southport, Merseyside - Oct 2017 https://www.theatkinson.co.uk/special-event/big-blues-festival-2017/ Another excellent 'Big Blues Festival' this year, at the highly acclaimed Atkinson Arts Centre in the centre of Southport. Held over two days, it gave a good variety of blues based artists on three stages. Friday Young and talented 'Benjamin Bassford' from Mansfield opened the Festival on the Theatre Stage. Ben earned his place on the main stage after winning the vote from last year's Little Blues Acoustic Stage, sponsored by Blues Matters magazine. Playing a mix of excellent self penned numbers of blues and acoustic roots, he showcased his guitar skills on resonator and acoustic guitar as well as his superb vocal talent. The audience were well entertained and he is an ambassador for the youth of blues roots. Benjamin Bassford - photo courtesy of Jan Fialkowski https://www.benjaminbassford.com/ Upping the tempo on the Theatre Stage were the brilliant jump jive rockers 'The Revolutionaires', a high energy six piece band from the Northeast. Fronting the band on vocals, guitar and harmonica was the charismatic, full on performer, Ed Stephenson. With plenty of brass input from trumpets, excellent keys and upright bass, they gave their own individual take on 1950's rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and played a mix of classics from Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Etta James, Big Joe Turner and more. They certainly were a crowd pleasers and it was a great way to finish the evening. The Revolutionaires - photo courtesy of Jan Fialkowski http://www.the-revolutionaires.co.uk/ Saturday Opening on the Little Blues Acoustic Stage in the foyer was 'Stoney Broke'.

Newsletter No. 8 August 2001 BUMPER The voices of our past are still our greatest teachers SUMMER ISSUE out of interest after the 'Hot Seven' days and his Louis Armstrong 'All Stars' just didn't seem as interesting as he came to be more and more a solo artist with a (1901-1971) backing group. A Personal Recollection by Denis Cooper But, not withstanding, when he came to the Empire Hall in 1956 (I think) I was there dragging editor Keith's sister along. After what seemed an eternity of dreary warm-up acts the band came on and started to play 'When it's sleepy time down South’. Suddenly a small smartly dressed figure in a blue suit ran up from under the stage and joined in, immediately drowning everyone else. The audience erupted with cheers and whistles even though the acoustics were dreadful - imagine sitting in an oversized cooking pot with the lid ajar! I went to Macs, 100 Oxford Street later that week to see Chris Barber where Louis came in and It was in 1950 that I first heard of jazz - there used played quite a few numbers with them and that to be a program called Jazz Hour on the radio with was a lot better. I can't remember all the titles but a bit of Duke Ellington as an intro. I thought it was 'Basin St Blues' and 'Way Down Yonder in New great but a schoolmate told me it was slush! Then Orleans' were in there. I heard Jelly Roll Morton's 'Dr Jazz' and I was struck all of a heap – “sent” they called it.

As you may recall me mentioning in my Buzz column in our last issue on page 55, we are fast approaching our 100th issue. Maybe you feel that our longevity, almost sixteen years, is proof enough of our popularity. Well I think all of us here at the magazine need to have evidence a little more substantial. With conventional magazines it's simple, be it glossy form on newsagent’s shelves or on-line, popularity or lack of it is gauged by paid subscriptions. Here at Tales From The Woods, we as you would quite rightly expect, do things a little differently from other folks. The magazine is free as part of the generous perks of becoming a member along with reductions on gigs, merchandise, automatic invitations to all our social events and so forth.

  • Macari's Musical Exchange – Part of Wembley's Pop Music History
Macari’s Musical Exchange – part of Wembley’s Pop Music history. This article only came about because of an enquiry to Wembley History Society. What were the name and address of a music shop in Ealing Road run by the Macari family around the 1960s, and could we provide a photograph of it? The first part was quite easy, Macari’s Musical Exchange was at 46b Ealing Road. But we can’t find a photograph of it. If anyone reading this has one, please share a copy of it with us (c/o Brent Archives)! 1. An old postcard of Ealing Road, with the shop's location arrowed. (Brent Archives online image 8823) Along with the shop’s address, we did receive a number of memories of the Macari family and the shop from the Society’s members and friends. Some of these were quite detailed. As they help to tell the story of those times, I decided to put them together in this article, both for general interest and for anyone who might like to know more about Wembley’s music history. 2. 1960s street map of Wembley, with shop's location marked. (G.I. Barnett street plan / courtesy Zerine Tata) 46 Ealing Road is on the corner of Chaplin Road, at the northern end of a small parade of shops (numbers 46 to 60). The Macari shop is not shown in the 1958 edition of Curley’s Directory of Wembley, but it probably opened soon afterwards, and appears in the 1962 and 1968 editions. There were two shops at number 46.
