Hendley Michelle Pfeifer -Biography- As the wife of Scarface's Tony Montana, Michelle Pfeiffer made a strong impression with her stunning looks and haunting style. She has earned three Academy Award nominations, two as Best Actress for her performances as Dallas housewife Lurenc Hallett in "Love Field," as the sexy chanteuse Suzie Diamond in "The fabulous Baker Boys," and a third nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as thc long suffering Madame de Tourvel in "Dangerous Liaisons." Additionally, Pfeiffer won a Golden Globe for her performance in "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and received Golden Globe nominations for her performances in 'The Age of Innocence," "Love field," "Frankie and Johny," "The Russia I-Iouse," and "Married to the Mob." Pfeiffer is truly the villainess of the summer, appearing in two highly-anticipated films. Pfeiffer portrays the evil witch "Lamia" in the film, which is a fairy tale set in ancient England. The cast includes Claire Danes, Robert DeNiro, Sienna Miller, Rupert Everett and Ricky Gervais. "Stardust" will be released August 10,2007. In 2003, she lent her voice in Dreamworks' animated feature "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" with Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Joseph Fiennes. In 2002, Pfeiffer received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for her role as the murderous mother Ingrid Magnusson in Warner Brothers' "White Oleander." In 2001, she starred in the critically acclaimed "I am Sam," opposite Sean Penn. In 2000, she starred in thc summer blockbuster "What Lies Beneath," opposite Harrison Ford. During its pioneering era, Hollywood was dominated by women who occupied every aspect of the filmmaking process, both off and on screen; but the consolidation of the studio system in the 1920s and 1930s served to reduce the scope of opportunities for women working in off-screen roles. Off screen, a pattern of gendered employment was effectively established, one that continues to confine women to so-called “feminine” crafts such as scriptwriting and costume. Celebrated exceptions like Ida Lupino, Dorothy Arzner, Norah Ephron, Nancy Meyers, and Katherine Bigelow have found various ways to succeed as producers and directors in Hollywood’s continuing male-dominated culture. More typically, as recently as 2011, “women comprised only 18% of directors, executive producers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films” (Lauzen 2012: 1). At the same time, on-screen representations came to be increasingly predicated on a gendered star system that privileges hetero-masculine desires, and are dominated by historically specific discourses of idealized and fetishized feminine beauty that, in turn, severely limit the number and types of roles available to women. As far back as 1973 Molly Haskell observed that the elision of beauty and youth that underpins Hollywood casting impacted upon the professional longevity of female stars, who, at the first visible signs of aging, were deemed “too old or over-ripe for a part,” except as a marginalized mother or older sister.

    A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. She is an intellectual who speaks French and is a confirmed Francophile. She plays complex characters that have nothing to do with the temptresses loved by American cinema. At first, she was that Lolita who fascinated the crowds and appealed to every gaze – even those of predators. But her status as this precocious young beauty almost cost her her career, before she decided to take matters into her own hands and become the most powerful actress and female director in Hollywood. How did the former child star, discovered in Disney TV movies and reinvented as a 12-year-old prostitute in Taxi Driver, manage to conquer a powerful, patriarchal industry that probably never really understood her? Too radical for the Hollywood oligarchy but too mainstream for the militant groups that reproached her for hiding her homosexuality and maintaining ties with Mel Gibson and Roman Polanski, Jodie Foster is problematic. She lived out her feminism as a lonesome cowgirl, alone against the world, settling for films that got her voice heard. It’s as if she was jealously guarding a secret.

    Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism.

Good film; nice plot twist. Also interesting brief portrayal of Munchausen’s by Proxy. Willis is a much more ethical psychologist in this film than in the horrible Color of Night. On Golden Pond Genre: Drama/Comedy Year: 1981 Rating: PG Actors: Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda Topics: Neuropsychology, Marital/Family Dynamics Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Best Actress. Beautiful story of enduring love in an elderly couple, the husband’s suffering from the early stages of dementia, and its effect on family members. Acting doesn’t get much better than this. I Am Sam Genre: Drama Year: 2001 Rating: PG‐13 Actors: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning Topics: Psychopathology, Neuropsychology, Forensic, Marital/Family Dynamics, Social Sean Penn portrays a man with mental retardation fighting for custody of his 7‐year‐old child. Sam’s group of friends are entertaining – two are truly developmentally disabled – his close neighbor is agoraphobic. His lawyer is the stereotypical overworked yuppie professional woman, estranged from her family. The film is a classic tearjerker. Despite significant research for the film (watch the supplemental documentary), how realistic were the events? Did he take her to a pediatrician? Did the pediatrician have any concerns about his care? Was that a realistic portrayal of cross‐examination of an expert witness? Could Sam really have afforded the apartment at the end in Los Angeles, making somewhere around $8/hour? What really was in the best interest of the child? Was the opposing attorney all that wrong? Many things to consider.
