  • Once Upon a Wire Wheel
Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

  • Racing Families – the Andrettis Hello and Welcome to a Brand New Episode in the Racing Families Mini-Series from Sidepodcast
Racing Families – The Andrettis Hello and welcome to a brand new episode in the Racing Families mini-series from Sidepodcast. As you may expect we’re looking at the great and the good from the world of motorsport, but particularly those that are keeping it in the family. Today, it’s time for a sprawling family legacy, and the name? Andretti. You’ve probably heard of Mario Andretti. He’s tried his hand at pretty much every type of racing there is on four wheels, and been largely successful too. The 73 year old American is now, naturally, retired, but in his sporting career he added to a long list of titles, and broke far too many records to mention. Mario was F1 World Champion in 1978, driving for Team Lotus, having joined the sport ten years earlier. Before that, in 1969, he won the Indy 500, which he continued to participate in for 29 years altogether. After his F1 stint, with a little bit of a crossover, he appeared in the CART series, winning that championship in 1984. He’s also tried his hand at NASCAR and the Le Mans 24 Hour race, with his best finish an overall second place. With this kind of DNA, it’s hardly surprising that the Andretti family are one of the more extensive in racing. Mario Andretti has a twin brother called Aldo, and in their very early days of racing, they built up a stock car together and took turns behind the wheel. They continued racing for about ten years, between 1959 and 69, but after two serious accidents, Aldo gave it up.

BeFore that he was with the Williams team, with whom he made his F1 debut. Rosberg races as a German but he has dual nationality with both Germany and Finland. His mother is German, and his Father is the Finnish Formula One driver Keke RosBerg. Keke was the First Full-time Finnish F1 driver, joining the series in 1978. He had worked his way through various junior formulae beFore being signed to the Theodore F1 team. The early results weren’t promising due to the aBility of the car, but Rosberg outdrove his machinery and raised eyebrows at the bigger teams. • Lola T70 Brian Redman 6-14-12

Chairman, chief executive, chief designer, head chef and bottle washer at Lola Cars Ltd., Eric did it all. Myth has it that the name Lola, came from a song in the “Damn Yankees” show – “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets”. In 1950’s, trained as a quantity surveyor and living in the southern suburbs of London, Eric and his cousin Graham became enthusiastic members of the 750 Motor Club. Remember that in these post-war years there was very little of anything to race with in Great Britain. 750 Motor Club members generally built their own cars, based on the pre-war Austin 7. Amongst motor racing luminaries who were members of this club are such names as, Colin Chapman, Brian Hart, Len Terry, Frank Costin, Len Bailey and the inimitable Major Arthur Mallock – who I raced against in 1968 when everyone had gone to rear engined F2 cars – except for Major Mallock, who drove his own front-engined creation with skill, bravery and great determination. In 1957 Eric and cousin Graham pooled resources and built the Broadley Special. The “Special” featured a sold rear axle, swing axle at the front and a home-tuned version of the Ford 1,172 cc side-valve engine, first produced for the Ford Model C before the war. Quickly successful, Eric must have been smiling quietly, in his own modest way, when he won the major 750 MC Trophy – presented by arch-rival, Colin Chapman! In 1958, Eric was joined by long-time friend, war hero Rob Rushbrook who became works manager and went, first in 1963 to Slough, then in 1970, with Eric to a new workshop in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire where Lola remain today.
