Once Upon a Wire Wheel
Once Upon A Wire Wheel by Bernie and Norm Koglin This is the first in a series of articles recalling a few highlights from the fifty year history of the Chicago Region SCCA. Most of the information in this article is found in a history of the Club’s early years written by Fred Wacker some years ago. We also wish to thank Burdie Martin for the loan of his copies of the very earliest issues of PISTON PATTER which are an invaluable source. In the Beginning…… 1948- 1954 The term “sports car” would have meant very little to a vast majority of Americans in the years right after World War II. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region. -

Lola T70 Brian Redman 6-14-12
Lola T70 Brian Redman 6-14-12 David Hobbs, Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren. photo courtesy of www.JohnStarkeyCars.com The story of the Lola T70 personifies the talents and ambitions of Eric Broadley, perhaps the most versatile racing car designer/builder of all time. Chairman, chief executive, chief designer, head chef and bottle washer at Lola Cars Ltd., Eric did it all. Myth has it that the name Lola, came from a song in the “Damn Yankees” show – “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets”. In 1950’s, trained as a quantity surveyor and living in the southern suburbs of London, Eric and his cousin Graham became enthusiastic members of the 750 Motor Club. Remember that in these post-war years there was very little of anything to race with in Great Britain. 750 Motor Club members generally built their own cars, based on the pre-war Austin 7. Amongst motor racing luminaries who were members of this club are such names as, Colin Chapman, Brian Hart, Len Terry, Frank Costin, Len Bailey and the inimitable Major Arthur Mallock – who I raced against in 1968 when everyone had gone to rear engined F2 cars – except for Major Mallock, who drove his own front-engined creation with skill, bravery and great determination. In 1957 Eric and cousin Graham pooled resources and built the Broadley Special. The “Special” featured a sold rear axle, swing axle at the front and a home-tuned version of the Ford 1,172 cc side-valve engine, first produced for the Ford Model C before the war. Quickly successful, Eric must have been smiling quietly, in his own modest way, when he won the major 750 MC Trophy – presented by arch-rival, Colin Chapman! In 1958, Eric was joined by long-time friend, war hero Rob Rushbrook who became works manager and went, first in 1963 to Slough, then in 1970, with Eric to a new workshop in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire where Lola remain today. -
Some Fond Memories of Carl Haas by Gordon Kirby July 11, 2016
The Way It Is/ Some fond memories of Carl Haas by Gordon Kirby July 11, 2016 Carl Haas has passed away after a long illness. Haas, 86, was one of America's most successful race team owners who enjoyed wide influence in his other roles as the country's most prolific race car salesman and chairman for many years of the SCCA's board of governors. He also promoted races at the Milwaukee Mile and sat on Road America's board of directors. Carl owned and operated Newman/Haas Racing from 1983-2011 in partnership with Paul Newman who lost his battle with cancer in 2008. Haas ran the team out of his base in Lincolnshire, Illinois and Newman/Haas is ranked second only to Team Penske on IndyCar's all- time winners list with a record of 107 wins, 109 pole positions and eight championships. Haas's statistics are even more impressive when you add his team's 39 Can-Am and Formula 5000 wins and seven championships from the nineteen-seventies and early eighties. Haas caught the racing bug in 1951 when a friend took him to a road race through the surrounding roads and streets of Elkhart Lake. The race was a forerunner to the creation a few years later of the great Road America road course but that summer day in 1951 caught young Carl's imagination and he was soon racing an MGTD in SCCA club races. © Racemaker/David Hutson "A friend of mine took me to a race at Elkhart Lake," Carl recalled a few years ago. -

In this, the final installment, we pick up in the early succumbed to housing development and a shopping mall. 1970s and wind through the stories that shaped the making and, ultimately, the demise of Riverside Raceway. ince its inception in 1957, Riverside had struggled hard just to survive. By the late 1960s, thanks Sin large part to a strong management team led by Les Richter, not only had Riverside survived, but the track was thriving. However, as the 1970s dawned, motorsports entered a rocky period. As a result of the fading performance car market and in the face of fierce competition from foreign carmakers, U.S. automotive manufacturer support of motorsports dwindled. At the end of the 1970 season, Ford announced it was ending its racing program. Other Detroit manufacturers soon followed suit. This pull-back dramatically affected those racing series that relied heavily on manufacturer support, most notably SCCA’s Trans- Am Series that had exploded in popularity as a result of the pony car market’s success. The Ontario Effect Ontario Motor Speedway splashed onto the racing scene in the late ’60s with a reported $25.5 million invested into a state-of-the-art facility that was built about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, only 15 miles from Riverside. -
