Remembering Past (S), Imagining Futures: the Politics of Hope In Remembering Past(s), Imagining Futures: The Politics of Hope in Palestine By Noa Tova Shaindlinger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto © Copyright by Noa Shaindlinger 2016 Remembering Past(s), Imagining Futures: The Politics of Hope in Palestine Noa Shaindlinger Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2016 Abstract Using hope as a category of experience, this dissertation explores the ways Palestinians and their Israeli-Jewish allies undermine urban spatial expropriations under Israeli-settler-colonialism. Focusing on the city of Jaffa, I analyze the ways in which the Israeli state and the Tel Aviv municipality succeeded in ‘burying’ histories of mass expulsions, organized violence and appropriations of private and public spaces. I then follow the fortunes of Palestinians – those who remained in Jaffa and became a minority under regimes of neoliberalization and Judaicization, and those who were expelled, found themselves de-nationalized and precarious refugees, some confined to decrepit camps, while others pursued opportunities for meaningful political engagement and armed struggle. The dissertation ends with a powerful gesture towards a future that undermines the colonial present and its attendant sense of hopelessness: I explore how both Palestinians and Israeli-Jews engage with the ideas of reconciliation and “living together” in the “Jaffa of tomorrow.” My focus on hope as a category of experience hinges on two main intersecting axes: temporality and place. Just as political identities are rooted in the refugee camp experience and informed by the quotidian and the present, on the one hand, and memory and absence on the other, so, I argue, is Palestinians’ understanding of the local. Rather than accepting normative assertions that ii define the local as a bounded place that is both community-making and exclusive of those outside of it, I wish to suggest that locality, and attachment to it, is much more multi-directional, dispersed in time and space. This understanding brings to our line of sight those people who are geographically external to place, in this case Jaffa, but have nonetheless powerful attachment to it. In many ways, then, Palestinians are fighting for the right to belong against submerged histories of ethnic cleansing and entrenched colonial denial of their attachments to places they were expelled from. iii Acknowledgments This dissertation is dedicated to the memory of Hamed al-Sa’id, a refugee from Jaffa, who died in exile, in Balata camp, and to all the Palestinian refugees who have suffered the pangs of longing for the homeland. This project would not have been completed without the immense help I have received from Palestinians in Jaffa and in Nablus, in particular all the refugees, young and old, that I met at the camps and who shared their personal histories with me. “Tell them we are still here, in these overcrowded and crumbling camps. Don’t let the world forget about us,” they pleaded with me time and again. This project was carried out, then, with an eye to echo the voices of the refugees, to demand the world does not abandom them to their fate and side with their oppressors.     Arab Israeli Teachers Working in Jewish Schools and Jewish Teachers Working in Arab Israeli Schools Nachum Blass1 Background In Israel, there is a separation between the Jewish education system and the Arab Israeli education system. The decision for this separation has both practical and ideological explanations. There are those who claim that the demographic realities dictate this separation. However it is revealing that the policy since the founding of the state was to strengthen and preserve the Jewish identity amongst the Jewish sector, and a coming to terms with the national identity of the Arab Israeli pupils. The ideological component is the more important of the two; this is evidenced by the fact that even in places where it would be possible to establish a combined education system, like in mixed cities (Tel Aviv-Yaffo, Haifa, Jerusalem, Acco, Lod, and Ramla), there is a complete separation between the two systems. This separation exists in every part of the education system although it is the most severe in the State-religious and Haredi education. There it is backed by instructions at the highest level that “advise” in no uncertain terms against the hiring of Arab Israeli teachers. This reality has many implications both on the educational level and on the overall societal level. On the educational level, it intensifies the fluctuations in supply and demand for teachers due to the limitations it creates in moving from sector to sector.     Mishal 569 The Pragmatic Dimension of the Palestinian Hamas: A Network Perspective SHAUL MISHAL n the wake of the 11 September attack on the World Trade Center in INew York and President Bush’s “war on terrorism,” it is important to try to understand the cultural, political, and social dimensions of such radical Islamic groups as the Palestinian Hamas. Within political and academic circles in the Western world, it is common to portray Islamic movements in categorical terms that utilize binary classifications that mark real or imaginary social attributes rather than relational patterns.1 Much of this perception derives from the violence accompanying Islamic reli- gious fervor and the fanaticism marking some of its groups and regimes, raising fears of “a clash of civilizations” and “a threat” to Western liberal democratic values and social order.2 Hamas, an abbreviation of Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya (Is- lamic Resistance Movement), did not escape the binary perception, and has been described solely as a movement identified with Islamic funda- mentalism and suicide bombings. The objectives at the top of its agenda are the liberation of Palestine through a holy war (jihad) against Israel, establishing an Islamic state on its soil, and reforming society in the spirit of true Islam. It is this Islamic vision, combined with its nationalist claims and militancy toward Israel, that accounts for the prevailing image of Hamas as a rigid movement, ready to pursue its goals at any cost, with no limits or constraints.     THE ORIGINS OF HAMAS: MILITANT LEGACY OR ISRAELI TOOL? JEAN-PIERRE FILIU Since its creation in 1987, Hamas has been at the forefront of armed resistance in the occupied Palestinian territories. While the move- ment itself claims an unbroken militancy in Palestine dating back to 1935, others credit post-1967 maneuvers of Israeli Intelligence for its establishment. This article, in assessing these opposing nar- ratives and offering its own interpretation, delves into the historical foundations of Hamas starting with the establishment in 1946 of the Gaza branch of the Muslim Brotherhood (the mother organization) and ending with its emergence as a distinct entity at the outbreak of the !rst intifada. Particular emphasis is given to the Brotherhood’s pre-1987 record of militancy in the Strip, and on the complicated and intertwining relationship between the Brotherhood and Fatah. HAMAS,1 FOUNDED IN the Gaza Strip in December 1987, has been the sub- ject of numerous studies, articles, and analyses,2 particularly since its victory in the Palestinian legislative elections of January 2006 and its takeover of Gaza in June 2007. Yet despite this, little academic atten- tion has been paid to the historical foundations of the movement, which grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Gaza branch established in 1946. Meanwhile, two contradictory interpretations of the movement’s origins are in wide circulation. The !rst portrays Hamas as heir to a militant lineage, rigorously inde- pendent of all Arab regimes, including Egypt, and harking back to ‘Izz al-Din al-Qassam,3 a Syrian cleric killed in 1935 while !ghting the British in Palestine.

    ANALYZING PRIMARY SOURCES CASE LEARNING ACTIVITY KIRYAT ANAVIM, 1921 LESSON OVERVIEW Kiryat Anavim (City of Vineyards) is a Kibbutz in the Judean Hills near Jerusalem. The land that would become the Kibbutz was bought in 1913-14 by the Palestine Land Development Company Organization from ‘Abdallah Effendi Abu Ghosh and ‘Abd al-Hamid Effendi Abu as part of the purchase of Dilb which had begun in 1910. The first settlers were a group of Jewish workers from Bialystock who, due to onset of World War I, vacated the area. The Kibbutz was founded in 1920 by a group of agricultural settlers from Eastern Europe who came as part of the Third Aliyah (see timeline 1919-1923). At first settlement and cultivation was difficult, especially as the settlers lacked sufficient financial resources, to develop modern farming on the hilly terrain. In 1920, the Jewish National Fund provided some financial assistance that helped the settlers by building terraces, planting saplings and. By the end of 1920 there were around 200 pioneers in Kiryat Anavim. In this lesson, students will analyze two photographs from Kiryat Anavim taken in 1921 and use their observations to produce a news story. ENDURING UNDERSTANDING Immigrants to Israel in 1920 faced many difficulties and worked hard to build and develop the infrastructure for the Jewish State.
