H-Women Opera in the French Revolution: Sappho, Medea, Oedipus at Colonus Discussion published by Judith Miller on Monday, April 11, 2016 Dear colleagues, There are just 3 weeks until the performances in DC (Fri., Apr. 29) and NYC (Sun., May 1) of the Opera Lafayette’s "Opera and the French Revolution." The production includes the modern world premiere of excerpts from Constance Pipelet's and Martini's 1794Sapho , along with excerpts from the Sacchini/Guillard Oedipe à Colonne (1786) and the Cherubini/Hoffmann Médée (1797). Miřenka Čechová and the artistic team will focus on the three principal female characters, all sung by Nathalie Paulin. This is a fully-staged contemporary production, directed by Miřenka Čechová, Programming Director for the Visual and Performing Arts at NYC’s Czech Center. Performances: Friday, April 29, 7:30pm in Washington, DC Lisner( Auditorium at George Washington University; A pre-performance discussion at the Lisner Auditorium.) Sunday, May 1, 8pm in NYC Rose( Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center; A pre-performance discussion in the Noble Room.) Tickets: https://operalafayette.secure.force.com/ticket The blog for this production is up and running. The company, founded and directed by Ryan Brown, has performed at Versailles. It has received enthusiastic reviews for its productions and CDs (11 albums on the Naxos label). I will give the pre-performances talks and have enjoyed watching the production develop this spring. The music is dramatic (a 10-note chord in the finale to Sapho, for instance). I hope that many of you, especially those in the DC and NYC areas, will attend these performances. Introduction eople are often curious when I say I study meter. They think it must be boring, fussy, picky work. Indeed, there are very picky parts to the study Pof meter, but it is worth the effort: meter is our best remaining clue to the music and dance that were such an important part of the Greek theater. In what follows, I will discuss a metrical motif in Oedipus at Colonus that previous commentators on the play have not noticed. The motif is a sort of leitmotif or theme-song for the growing relationship between Oedipus and the chorus, and helps to tie the famous "Colonus Ode" to the rest of the play.1 II.

Introduction to Aeschylus, Seven Against Thebes Ἕπτ’ ἐπὶ Θήβας [Hept' epi Thēbas “Seven Against Thebes”] from its first performance at the City Dionysia in 367 BCE, the third tragedy in Aeschylus’ first-prize winning tetralogy Laios- Oidipous-Seven Against Thebes-Sphinx,1 has been widely recognized as an exceptional tragedy. Some sixty-two years later its fame was confirmed by Aristophanes in his wonderful comedy on the subject of tragedy, Frogs. Aristophanes has Aeschylus say for himself that everyone who saw Seven Against Thebes fell in love with the idea of a heroic warrior. Aristophanes’ character Dionysus, the god in whose honor Attic dramas were especially written and produced on the stage and for whom the principal Athenian theater, on the south slope of the Acropolis was named, calls out Aeschylus for doing a disservice to Athens, making the Thebans to be so brave in battle—a left-handed compliment to the tragic poet—Aristophanes’ comic character Aeschylus deflects by saying, in effect, the Athenians could have exercised those qualities, but didn’t. He goes on to add that his Persians (which really couldn’t have been a corrective measure since it was produced in 472, five years earlier) inspired Athenians. In fact, as Aristophanes in seriousness might admit, a strong point of Aeschylus’ dramatic poetry, like Homer’s epics, is that allies and enemies are portrayed as lifelike or equally larger than life, evenhandedly critical, not patently reductive of a whole cast of characters on the other side. So when in time a son was born the infant's feet were riveted together and he was left to die on Mount Cithaeron. But a shepherd found the babe and tended him, and delivered him to another shepherd who took him to his master, the King of Corinth. Polybus being childless adopted the boy, who grew up believing that he was indeed the King's son. Afterwards doubting his parentage he inquired of the Delphic god and heard himself the word declared before to Laius. Wherefore he fled from what he deemed his father's house and in his flight he encountered and unwillingly slew his father Laius. Arriving at Thebes he answered the riddle of the Sphinx and the grateful Thebans made their deliverer king. So he reigned in the room of Laius, and espoused the widowed queen. Children were born to them and Thebes prospered under his rule, but again a grievous plague fell upon the city. Again the oracle was consulted and it bade them purge themselves of blood-guiltiness. Oedipus denounces the crime of which he is unaware, and undertakes to track out the criminal.

Antigone at Colonus and the End(S) of Tragedy
ANTIGONE AT COLONUS AND THE END(S) OF TRAGEDY Brooke Holmes Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus, it would seem, is an exercise in closure. In the opening scene, Oedipus, worn down by years of wandering blind and hun- gry, arrives at the borders of Athens. Here is where his legendary sufferings— his murder of his father, his incestuous marriage to his mother, his betrayal by his sons, his exile from Thebes—are fated to end. Following his miraculous death, his body will become a sacred gift to the city that receives him, protect- ing it against future attack. In the closing moments of the play, everything un- folds according to plan. Oedipus disappears offstage and mysteriously descends into the earth. The king of Athens, Theseus, alone marks the spot of his disap- pearance, knowledge he will pass down to his sons as part of his responsibility to the city. By the end of the tragedy, then, Oedipus has made his way home to the gods in a land capable of honouring his awesome, singular fate. The concept of ‘coming home’ is integral, as this précis suggests, to the play’s logic of closure.1 Yet, crucially, it governs only one of the two planes on which the drama unfolds, that of the gods. Oedipus’ life has been in the hands of the gods since before he was born. That they reclaim him at the end of his life gives his exit the feel of a return. By contrast, the path to Athens, for all its meandering, is not circular but linear.

There is an unspoken sense of noble Athen poking fun its neighbor throughout. Paperback , pages. Greek men do not seem to have been very comfortable around women. There let her pray to the one god she worships: Death—who knows? It was written shortly before Sophocles' death in BC. Antigone is probably one of my most fvrt stubborn famme fatale characters, well what can you do, like father like daughter! The beautiful and simple language is easy to understand even for non-native English speakers; the accompanying notes are clear and require only a basic knowledge of Greek mythology.
