Stony Brook’s programs have grown out of an unusual partnership between the academy and the conservatory. The Music Department has a distinguished and well-balanced faculty in the areas of music history, theory, ethnomusicology, composition, and performance. The degree programs are designed to favor interaction among musical disciplines that have traditionally been kept separate. For example, the performance programs at Stony Brook all have an academic component. Graduate courses typically have a healthy mix of students from all areas. A number of courses are team taught by two or more faculty members, examining topics from several disciplinary viewpoints. -

Minerva (2011) 49:113–136 DOI 10.1007/s11024-011-9165-3 Chemistry, Green Chemistry, and the Instrumental Valuation of Sustainability Nathaniel Logar Published online: 20 February 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract Using the Public Value Mapping framework, I address the values suc- cesses and failures of chemistry as compared to the emerging field of green chemistry, in which the promoters attempt to incorporate new and expanded values, such as health, safety, and environmental sustainability, to the processes of priori- tizing and conducting chemistry research. I document how such values are becoming increasingly ‘‘public.’’ Moreover, analysis of the relations among the multiple values associated with green chemistry displays a greater internal coher- ence and logic than for conventional chemistry. Although traditional chemistry research has successfully contributed to both economic and values gains, there have been public values failures due to imperfect values articulations, failure to take a longer-term view, and inertia within a system that places too much emphasis on ‘‘science values.’’ Green chemistry, if implemented effectively, has potential to remedy these failures. He moved to Trieste in 1992, to become Full Professor in 2000. Since the end of 2015, he has been appointed Research Professor at CIC BiomaGUNE in San Sebastián, Spain. His research focuses on the application of all aspects of organic chemistry, synthetic and mechanistic, to build functional materials finalized to solve relevant problems in biology, medicine, and solar energy conversion. He was the recipient of an ERC Advanced Research Grant, European Research Council, 2008 and has become a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei) in 2010.
