Now known as the Nirbhaya case, this incident generated a mass media furor around the globe, bringing intensified attention to sexual violence in India, as well as revealing orientalist and neocolonial perceptions about gender violence in India. In this thesis, I analyse three campaigns that went viral on social media following the Nirbhaya incident. The Abused Goddesses advertising campaign uses images of battered Hindu goddesses to create awareness about domestic violence. Priya’s Shakti is an augmented reality comic book that presents a rape survivor as a ‘superhero’ who embarks on a journey to overturn rape culture and victim blaming. Finally, Talk to Me is a site-specific performative art project that addresses the fear that defines the experience of many women in India’s public spaces, by using the tools of dialogue and community building across borders of class, caste, gender, and language. I view the discourse surrounding these three campaigns through the conceptual lens of transnational feminist solidarity, as articulated in the work of postcolonial feminists such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Jacqui Alexander, Inderpal Grewal and Caren Kaplan. I argue that international media reports which uncritically celebrate the use of Hindu mythology in campaigns about sexual violence contribute to the persistence of orientalist and neocolonial perceptions of India. In addition, they help render invisible the ongoing and increasing violence of Hindu fundamentalism in India. I advocate a conscious effort to move away from such narrow discursive portrayals of sexual violence in India, towards a more reflective and nuanced narrative. This move, I argue, creates the opportunity for forming coalitions and solidarity amongst transnational feminists across borders of class, race, caste, nationality, religion, sexuality and gender. 4 Abstract (French) En décembre 2012, le viol collectif brutal d’une jeune femme dans un bus à New Dehli a généré une vague de manifestations a travers l'Inde. Maintenant connu sous le nom d’affaire Nirbhaya, cet incident a généré un scandale médiatique mondial, attirant une attention renforcée sur la violence sexuelle en Inde, révélant aussi des perceptions orientalistes et néocoloniales sur la violence à caractère sexiste en Inde. Dans cette thèse, j’analyse trois campagnes qui sont devenues virales sur les réseaux sociaux a la suite de l’affaire Nirbhaya. La campagne publicitaire Abused Goddesses utilise des images de déesses battues pour sensibiliser le public à propos de la violence domestique. Priya's Shakti est un magazine de bandes dessinées utilisant la réalité augmentée et qui présente la survivante d’un viol comme une ‘super hero’ qui se lance dans une aventure pour renverser la culture du viol et la logique de déresponsabilisation.

On the ambivalences of the Indian ‘list of sexual harassers in academia’ (LoSHA) Sara Morais dos Santos Bruss abstract This paper analyzes the appearance and circulation of an anonymously crowd-sourced list of names of alleged sexual harassers in Indian left-wing academia (referred to as LoSHA). Publicized by former law student Raya Sarkar, LoSHA has led to widespread discussions on feminist strategies of exposing sexual violence and is said to have divided feminists across the country. Instead of assessing the magnitude of the problem of sexual violence, discussions centred more on the ethics of the list and its aim to ‘name and shame’. The paper attempts to answer the question, whether there is legitimacy in what has mostly been dismissed as ‘naming and shaming’ through the lens of Michel Foucault’s concept of parrhesia. Understanding Sarkar as a whistleblower and LoSHA as an act of parrhesia situates the moment within the agora of a transnational feminist #metoo movement just as it allows for a reading of LoSHA as an attempt to alter the ‘truth games’ within the organization of Indian academia. Through this framework, LoSHA becomes a way of addressing ubiquitous cultures of sexual violence, for which there seems to be a lack of language.     Proceedings of Bridges 2013: Mathematics, Music, Art, Architecture, Culture Mathematical Ideas in Ancient Indian Poetry Sarah Glaz Department of Mathematics University of Connecticut Storrs, CT 06269, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Modern mathematics owes a big debt to India’s contributions to the subject. Of particular importance is the decimal, place value number system that appeared in India during the Vedic period or soon after, circa 1300 BC to 300 AD, and made its way to Europe during the Middle Ages. That period of time in India also produced a heady mixture of poetic works: poems, songs, grand epics, biographies and books of instruction in verse covering millions of pages. Mathematical ideas are interwoven into the metaphysical, religious and aesthetic fabric of many of these works. This article brings a selection of poems from that time period that provides a taste of ancient India’s mathematical preoccupations in their cultural and esthetic context. They also highlight India’s mathematical accomplishments of the period, and uncover instances where seeds of future mathematical concepts made their first appearance. The concluding remarks touch lightly on current Indian-inspired uses of mathematical poetry as a pedagogical tool. The Vedas and Supplementary Texts: Calendrical Calculations and Geometry The most ancient Indian literary works are the four Vedas. Controversially dated around 1300 BC, the oldest of the four, the Rig Veda, is a collection of 1028 hymns written in classical Sanskrit. Mathematical ideas involving astronomy and time reckoning appear in a number of the hymns, particularly those describing the creation of the world.

Gandhiji was only reinforcing it when he named his ideal state ‘Rama-Rajya’. Yet the predecessors of Roma, in his dynasty of the Ikshwakus, were as valiant and as benign as Rama himself. This story tells of their deeds. The heroes of epics have their tragic flaws because epics always tell the whole truth. Like Rama, his ancestors also had flawed characters despite the glory of their per­ sonalities. Inspired by the epic of Valmiki, Kalidasa wrote his classic poem ‘Raghuvamsha’. While chronicling the lives of the ancestors of Rama, it noted the decline of the ruling house also. It is interesting to note that the Puranas trace the genealogy of Rama to the Sun. Some of the illustrious ancestors listed in the genealogy are Manu, Ikshwaku, Harischandra, Rohita, Sagara, Bhagiratha, Ambarisha and Rituparna. Brihadbala, who fought in the Mahabhorata war is said to be a descendant of Rama. My project is invested in exploring the Partition not merely in terms of the events of August 1947, but as an ongoing process that continues to splinter political, cultural, emotional and sexual life-worlds in South Asia. My dissertation seeks to map analytical pathways to locate the Partition and the attendant formations of minoritization and sectarian violence as continuing, unfolding processes that constitute postcolonial nation-building. It examines the far-reaching presence of these formations in current configurations of politics, culture and subjectivity by mobilizing the interdisciplinary scope of affect-mediated Trauma and Memory Studies and Postcolonial Studies, in conjunction with literary analysis. My project draws on a wide range of cultural artifacts such as poetry, cantillatory performance, mourning rituals, testimonials, archaeological ruins, short stories and novels to develop a heuristic and affective re-organization of post-Partition South Asia. It seeks to illuminate through frameworks of memory, melancholia, trauma, affect and postcoloniality how the ongoing effects of the past shape the present, which in turn, offers us ways to reimagine the future. This dissertation reaches out to recent work developing a vernacular framework to analyze violence, trauma and loss in South Asia.

Taking Action: The Desiring Subjects of Neoliberal Feminism in India By Hemangini Gupta1 Abstract This paper reflects on an emergent brand of feminist activism in India that responds to everyday sexual violence against women in public. I focus specifically on the efforts of middle class women who organize through online media to conduct interventions in urban Indian public spaces. I review these recent feminist interventions and locate them within a historical review of the women’s movement in India to suggest that contemporary feminist organizing embodies and reflects India’s turn to neoliberalism in the 1990s. While neoliberal reforms have been analyzed within the terms of political economy, this paper extends existing research to consider how neoliberal subjectivities shape a new feminism.

Based on the analysis of interviews this thesis explores how political and cultural perceptions of women and women’s roles during colonialism, nationalism, partition, and modern times have contributed to the present existence of Eve-teasing and its repercussions on women. In the framework of history, culture, and gender studies, the paper seeks to provide possible explanations for why men Eve-tease women. The paper also discusses the effects of Eve-teasing on women’s daily lives and the ways in which women rebel against patriarchal restrictions in order to avoid becoming victims. Furthermore, this thesis attempts to make way for further research on Eve-teasing, a subject about which there is currently very limited scholarship. In the summer of the year 1901 a visit to the Kulu valley brought me face to face with people who still pay reverence to those very serpent-demons known from early Indian literature. In the course of my subsequent wanderings through the Western Himalayas, which in their remote valleys have preserved so many ancient beliefs and customs, I had ample opportunity for collecting information regarding the worship of the Nagas, as it survives up to the present day. Other nations have known or still practise this form of animal worship. But it would be difficult to quote another instance in which it takes such a prominent place in literature folk-lore, and art, as it does in India.

ABSTRACT This dissertation tracks an uncommon migration: the movement of young women doctors from urban medical colleges to rural clinics in Rajasthan, North India. The ability for young women doctors to transfer their lives to a rural clinic, even for a year or two, is vital for career advancement in Rajasthan’s government health sector. Yet I found that women, over and over, rejected this opportunity, turning this urban to rural migration into a trickle rather than a flow. Through interviews, observations, and travel in urban and rural Jaipur district, I explore the meanings of urban and rural spaces as well as contested understandings of what role doctors should play in the health of the population. I found that rural spaces were discursively marked as particularly dangerous for doctors who are urban, middle-class women. First, moving to a “village of strangers” required shedding one’s protective social network and the paternalistic surveillance that accompanies it.
