The collection includes research papers, industry and government reports, and media reports on the development, legality, economics, and ethics of legalized gambling. Most of the materials focus on gambling in the United Kingdom; the balance of the material covers South Africa, Canada, the United States, the European Union, Australia, some Asian-Pacific nations, and materials not specific to location. Las Vegas, Nevada. ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note British academic Peter Collins is an author, lecturer, and consultant on gambling and the gaming industry. A graduate of the Universities of Oxford and London, he founded and directed the National Centre for the Study of Gambling at the University of Cape Town in South Africa between 1995 and 1999. In 2000, he relocated to England, where he served as director of the Centre for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Salford, Manchester. In 2002, he was appointed Professor of Public Policy in the university's Salford Business School. Collins has published four books, including Gambling and the - Page 3- Guide to the Peter Collins Papers on International Gaming Public Interest (2003), and served as an expert advisor to several national governments on gambling policy and the public interest, both in committee and through position papers. ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Contents Note The Peter Collins Papers on International Gaming (1974-2010) consist of materials collected or written by Professor Peter Collins on the development, legality, economics and ethics of legalized gambling. The collection includes research papers, industry and government reports addressing casino development, horseracing, sports betting, national lotteries, and other forms of gambling. Most of the materials focus on the United Kingdom with the balance of the material covering South Africa, Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, some Asian-Pacific nations, and materials not specific to location. ^ Return to Table of Contents Arrangement These records are organized into three series: Series I. The majority of the press coverage and releases relate to the United Kingdom (UK), primarily in relation to the passage of legislation and discussion regarding large casino gambling in metropolitan areas of the UK in addition to Jersey. It also includes a DVD copy of a keynote speech from an academic conference, VHS tapes related to casino development, and several unidentifiable partial papers. The scope of the research is both general and country-specific and deals primarily with issues of problem gambling, ethics, and legalization. Additional materials are specific to three academic researchers; William Eadington of the University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada, Robert Ladouceur of Université Laval de Québec, Canada, and Barry Standish, of the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. Arrangement: Materials in this series are arranged by geographic region. Within each region, materials are arranged alphabetically by report title.
