A wooded mountain ridge extends nearly the entire length of the island, with numerous deep fertile valleys running down to the coast. The bights around the coast are fringed by reefs but never extend more than 0.5 nml offshore. Pago Pago, on the south side of Tutuila, is the principal and best harbour in American Samoa. There are several anchorages on the north coast. Navigational aids: SW approach – approaching from SW, the line of bearing 027 deg of Breakers Point (14 deg 17 min S, 170 deg 40 min W) ahead leads toward the entrance to Pago Pago harbour, passing (positions relative to Breakers Point). The lead lights into Pago Pago harbour are conspicuous and well maintained. 8 PACIFIC PORTS DIRECTORY 2014 Anchorages: Good anchorage maybe obtained anywhere in the inner part of the harbour in depths from 11 m to 45 m, blue mud and sand with excellent holding ground. It has a total land area of 240 square kilometres (92.7 sq miles), and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covering 1.8 million square kilometres (0.7 million sq miles) of ocean. There are fifteen major islands spread over 2.2 million square kilometres of ocean, divided into two distinct groups: the Southern Cook Islands and the Northern Cook Islands consisting of six (6) coral atolls.
