All releases are encoded with LAME 3.97 final v2 vbrnew (WEB may vary) At long last - THE seminal Techno album re-issued after years in the wilderness, Vinyl comes with a free copy of the CD! This album is one of the most cherished and influential pieces of electronic music ever. Upon its release in 1994 it sounded like little that had come before it taking the first wave influences of tracky Chicago boxjams and Detroit funk-finesse before gutting them and fitting them out with a shiny new Detroit motor that clicked and whirred with a well tuned German efficiency but funked like an Afro-American. Henrik Schwarz's recent 'Grandfather Paradox' mix sets Hood's classic 'Minus' alongside other legendary minimalists like Conrad Schnitzler and Steve Reich which is very fair, but Hood's minimalism is more about funk than any academic ambitions. He knew that subtle shifts in rhythm pattern and simple hints of melody were enough to create a devastating groove without going over the top into rock style bombast that a lot of techno of the time was verging on. His tracks worked more like a circle of African drummers setting a pace and introducing repetitive phrases intuitively rather than a group of blokes with noisy machines trying to make everyone submit to their funk. This album is the perfect showcase of this restraint and innately considered organisation with the majestic 'Museum' using only maybe 3-4 individual sounds to drive dancers into a frenzy or the teased elements of 'Unix' circling each other to release small but powerful fillips of funk energy for the floor. 'Minimal Nation' is a masterclass in Detroit Future Funk, engineered by a unique mind that will continue to be copied but seldom beaten.

Yore: Label Profile April 29th 2010, by Tobias| There's two sides to most things, but there's far more to Andy Vaz. Born in Düsseldorf, Vaz quickly made a name for himself with his first label, Background Records. Releasing the music of leading experimental artists like Akufen, Jan Jelinek and Kit Clayton, the imprint would grow into an internationally respected platform at the edge of incredible mindjourneys, futuristic experiments (as a series of label-samplers was appropriately titled) and danceability. The latter, however, grew increasingly more important over time, resulting in the founding of a second company, A Touch of Class, which would prove equally successful within an entirely different territory. As if running these labels, working as a DJ and embarking on a prolific production schedule of his own weren't enough, Vaz proudly gave birth to another sibling in 2007: Yore Records was prompted by the desire to pay homage to the pioneers of the genre and to honour a sound which had been brutally swept away by a tsunami of generic trendhoppers. Without engaging in cheap retro exercises, this third baby is all about the deep grooves, soulful ambiances and warm, jazzy basslines that made early House and Techno so magical, its lovingly presented 12inches as well as the occasional album oozing an appealing sense of musicianship and a perfect blend between the casual and the ambitious. Yore releases work both in a club and on headphones and its roster has organically shuffled renowned names like Rick Wade with complete newcomers. Probably it is because of this uncommon multitude of meanings that the label's profile has already far exceeded all expectations and turned into a synonym for quality and undiluted love.

  • Leksykon Polskiej I Światowej Muzyki Elektronicznej
Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. Stockhausen (Elektronische Studie I, II-1951-1954), H.

  • Doctor of Philosophy
RICE UNIVERSITY By tommy symmes A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE Doctor of Philosophy APPROVED, THESIS COMMITTEE William B Parsons William B Parsons (Apr 21, 2021 11:48 PDT) William Parsons Jeffrey Kripal Jeffrey Kripal (Apr 21, 2021 13:45 CDT) Jeffrey Kripal James Faubion James Faubion (Apr 21, 2021 14:17 CDT) James Faubion HOUSTON, TEXAS April 2021 1 Abstract This dissertation studies dance music events in a field survey of writings, in field work with interviews, and in conversations between material of interest sourced from the writing and interviews. Conversations are arranged around six reading themes: events, ineffability, dancing, the materiality of sound, critique, and darkness. The field survey searches for these themes in histories, sociotheoretical studies, memoirs, musical nonfiction, and zines. The field work searches for these themes at six dance music event series in the Twin Cities: Warehouse 1, Freak Of The Week, House Proud, Techno Tuesday, Communion, and the Headspace Collective. The dissertation learns that conversations that take place at dance music events often reflect and engage with multiple of the same themes as conversations that take place in writings about dance music events. So this dissertation suggests that writings about dance music events would always do well to listen closely to what people at dance music events are already chatting about, because conversations about dance music events are also, often enough, conversations about things besides dance music events as well. 2 Acknowledgments Thanks to my dissertation committee for reading this dissertation and patiently indulging me in conversations about dance music events.

FOCUS ON GERMAN STUDIES 14 205 „…EINE KUGEL VOR SICH HERROLLEN, DIE IMMER FETTER WIRD“ – INTERVIEW MIT DEM POPLITERATEN UND MUSIKER THOMAS MEINECKE homas Meinecke is one of Germany’s foremost representatives of the pop literature movement. His artistic abilities span a wide T array of interests. Meinecke is foremost a writer but also a musician and a radio DJ. He was born in Hamburg in 1955 and now lives near Munich. In his work Meinecke combines an encyclopedic interest in knowledge and scientific and feminist theories with the narration of daily-life encounters. Meinecke’s books appear at the renowned German publisher Suhrkamp. On the occasion of the Eleventh Annual Focus Graduate Student Conference at the University of Cincinnati on October 27 and 28, 2007, he read from his books Musik and Feldforschung. He later discussed with us his books, his ambitions, the driving force behind his work, and his literary plans for the near future. FOCUS Beim Lesen Ihres Romans Musik musste ich an ein Zitat aus Thomas Manns Zauberberg denken. Der Aufklärer Settembrini behauptet da, Musik sei politisch. Auch in Joseph Roths Radetzkymarsch heißt es ja „Jeden Sonntag war Österreich“, wenn Marschmusik gespielt wird. Musik symbolisiert also politische Macht. Sie sagen das auch, machen das aber natürlich anders als Mann und Roth. Sie geben der Musik ein Geschlecht, eine Zuordnung: Rock ist männlich und ejakuliert, und Disko und Techno haben ein weibliches Element. Wie definieren Sie diese politische Macht der Musik. Wie wird sie generiert? THOMAS MEINECKE Nicht jede Musik ist politisch. Mich interessiert zunächst die diskursive Ebene der Musik, die von ihrem eigenen Zustandekommen miterzählt.

Interview mit Jeff Mills ?: Tonight you will play what is called „Soulful disco“ on the invitation flyer. If a techno DJ such as you all of a sudden decides to „go disco“, it makes you wonder if the techno period is over. It seems like a return to the basics of dance music... Mills: Actually I am kind of embarressed, that we had to call it soulful disco. It is just for the convenience of the people. I mean, anything can be soulful depending on who you are. Before there were loops, before we decided to create this kind of repetition, music was in a very song-based form, where you had the intro, and then the verse and the chorus, and then the breakdown, and then another verse, and then out. But techno, house music, most of the dance music that doesn't have these structures, we are listening to today, comes from disco. We were trying to make disco, in a way. They had killed disco in America, and up pops house music. We were trying to make things like MFSB and the Sound of Philly, and this New York-type, high energy dance music, and that's actually were house comes from, and techno comes from house. You may hear a lot of things tonight, that you are very familiar with from the kind of music that you would normaly hear today, because it is all in relation. ?: But you used completely different equipment. Disco was the music with lavish string and horn arrangments, played by excellent musicians, who often worked together every day and therefore developed a very tight and sophisticated sound.

  • Tin Man Techno Tracks
