Fadamiro Pteromalus cerealellae is an ectoparasitoid of several pests of stored products. Information on several aspects of its biology and life history strategy is grossly lacking. My dissertation focuses on some aspects of the biology, behavior and the cues used by P. cerealellae to locate its host, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In Chapter II, I investigated the influence of environmental factors on longevity and reproductive performance of P. cerealellae. Male and female wasps benefited greatly from sugar feeding with significant increases in lifespan and progeny iv production. The suitability of freeze-killed larvae of C. maculatus as hosts for rearing P. cerealellae was investigated in Chapter III. Live and freeze-killed C. maculatus larvae were equally suitable as hosts for P. cerealellae with no significant difference in progeny production. In Chapter IV, I characterized the pre-imaginal stages of P. cerealellae for the first time using morphological structures revealed by microscopic techniques and recorded four larval instars for P. cerealellae. The external morphology of antennal sensilla of P. cerealellae was examined in Chapter V using scanning electron microscopy. Three morphologically different olfactory sensilla types were recorded on the antennae of both sexes with major sexual differences in the abundance of the multiporous sensilla trichodea type III and the multiporous placoid sensilla. In Chapter VI, I documented the mating behavior of P. cerealellae. Females exhibit “calling behavior” to initiate courtship. Males play the active role, exhibiting most of the observed pre-mounting behaviors. The role of semiochemicals in mediating intraspecific communication in P. cerealellae was investigated in Chapter VII using electroantennogram (EAG), behavioral (olfactometer) and analytical (gas chromatography) techniques. Results suggest the existence of male- and female-produced semiochemicals, possibly of cuticular origin, in this species. In Chapter VIII, the role of host-related semiochemicals in the host location of P. cerealellae was investigated using EAG, behavioral and analytical techniques. Results suggest the use of multiple olfactory stimuli in host finding by female P. cerealellae with preference for stimuli from host habitats (cowpea seed odor). v VITA Ebenezer Oloyede Onagbola, son to Chief Emmanuel (Late) and Mrs. Maria Onagbola, was born on January 2, 1973 in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. In this study we investigate the influence of such reproductive parasites on the behavior of their insects and arachnid hosts. We find that changes in host behavior that are associated with endosymbiont infections are not restricted to characteristics that are directly associated with reproduction. Other behavioural traits, such as those involved in intraspecific competition or in dispersal may also be affected. Such behavioural shifts are expected to influence the level of intraspecific variation and the rate at which adaptation can occur through their effects on effective population size and gene flow amongst populations. Symbionts may thus influence both levels of polymorphism within species and the rate at which diversification can occur.

La primera población, provenía de Xalapa, México, y fue originalmente colectada y criada sobre pupas de la Mosca Mexicana de la Fruta, Anastrepha ludens Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae). La segunda población, originaria de Athens, Georgia, fue colectada y criada sobre prepupas de avispas de barro, Trypoxylon politum Say (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae). Estudios de PCR de la región ITS2 confi rmaron que ambas poblaciones del parasitoide pertenecen a la misma especie; lo que nos provee de un perfi l molecular taxonómico muy útil debído a que las hembras de las diversas especies de Melittobia son superfi cialmente similares. La amplifi cación del gen de superfi cie de proteina (wsp) de Wolbachia confi rmó la presencia de este endosimbionte en ambas poblaciones.

The phylogenetic relationships within the largest subfamily of Tachi- nidae,Exoristinae,were explored using nucleotide sequences of two genes *EF-1 a and 28S rDNA). A total of fifty-five and forty-three taxa were represented in the analyses for each gene,respectively,representing forty-three genera. Neighbour joining,parsimony and maximum likelihood inference methods were employed to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships in separate analyses of each gene,and parsimony was used to analyse the combined dataset. Although certain taxa were highly mobile,phylogenetic reconstructions generally supported recent clas- sification schemes based on reproductive habits and genitalia. Generally,the monophyly of Tachinidae and Exoristinae was supported. Tribes Winthemiini, Exoristini and Blondeliini were repeatedly constructed as monophyletic groups, with the former two clades often occupying a basal position among Exoristinae. Goniini and Eryciini generally clustered together as a derived clade within Exoristinae; however,they were never reconstructed as two distinct clades. These results suggest that the possession of unembryonated eggs is plesiomorphic within the subfamily and that there may have been multiple transitions between micro- type and macrotype egg forms. Entomol. 31(2): 354Ð360 (2002) ABSTRACT Catolaccus hunteri Crawford is an external parasitoid of cryptic Coleoptera, particularly of Bruchidae and Curculionidae in ßowerbuds, small fruits, and seeds. It is the most common parasitoid of the pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano, in the United States, Mexico, and elsewhere, and was introduced from Guatemala to Hawaii for control of this pest. Studies were conducted to assess effects of temperature and host on life history parameters of C. hunteri as a step toward eventual mass rearing and inoculative release for pepper weevil control. Oviposition, postovipostion period and adult longevity were shorter at 30ЊC than at 20 or 25ЊC. Mean number of eggs oviposited per female was greater at the lower temperatures than at the highest temperature. Duration of all development stages was shorter at 30ЊC than at 20 and 25ЊC. Developmental period of C. hunteri was longer and adult longevity was shorter on boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman, than any other host. Female wasps laid most eggs on the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), larvae. Transferring of C. hunteri reared on C. maculatus to pepper weevil or boll weevil caused a reduction in the mean number of eggs/female. Age-speciÞc life tables and age-speciÞc fecundity for C. hunteri were analyzed using three constant temperature regimes and Þve sources of host.

In many countries, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) has been used effectively as a biological control agent against aphids, particularly in greenhouses. In Japan, A. aphidimyza was reg- istered as a biological control agent in April 1999, and mass-produced cocoons have been imported from The Netherlands and United Kingdom since mass-rearing methods have not yet been estab- lished. In recent years, the effect of imported A. aphidimyza on aphid populations was evaluated in greenhouses at some Agricultural Experiment Stations in Japan. However, no striking effect has been reported yet from Japan. The failure of its use in Japan seems to be caused chiefly by the lack of detailed ecological or behavioral information of A. aphidimyza. Therefore, we investigated its ecological and behavioral attributes as follows: (1) the survival of pupae in relation to the depth of pupation sites; (2) the time of adult emergence in response to photoperiod during the pupal stage; (3) the importance of a hanging substrate for successful mating; and (4) the influence of adult size and nutrient status on adult longev- ity and fecundity. (1) A commercial natural enemy importer in Japan suggests that users divide cocoons into groups and put each group into a plastic container filled with vermiculite to a depth of 100 mm. However, we believe this is too deep for A. aphidimyza pupae, since under natural conditions mature larvae spin their cocoons in the top few millimeters to a maxmum depth of 30 mm.

This parasitoid has been reared in the laboratory on an artificial diet devoid of any insect host components. However, wasps reared on this artificial diet had reduced fecundity. Efforts to increase fecundity included supplementing the diet with cell culture media conditioned with a cell line from ovaries of the fall armyworm, S. frugiperda, in one experiment and fortifying the diet with lipids extracted from pupae of S. frugiperda in a second experiment. In the first experiment, differences in mean oviposition and mean longevity among females reared on the artificial control diet (artificial diet), cell line-supple- mented diet (Sf9Cell), and natural host (Host) were not significant. However, during the first 10 days of oviposition, Sf9Cell-reared females oviposited at a rate similar to the Host-reared parasitoids and at a rate faster than artificial-diet reared females. In the second experiment, females reared on the diet with added host lipid (host lipid) laid significantly more eggs than females on the artificial diet, however, longevity was not significantly affected by diet treat- ment.
