Ph.D., Purdue University, May 2015. Three Travelling Women Writers: Cross-Cultural Perspectives of Brazil, Patagonia, and the U.S., 1859-79. Major Professor: Charles Ross. The technological progress of the nineteenth century made travelling across the seas and the publishing of travel narratives both possible and desirable. Women used this as an opportunity to gain greater freedom of mobility and authorship. Instead of focusing on solitary travelers, this dissertation brings to the forefront the elaborate rhetoric and discourse strategies married women travel writers used in their narrative to transcend their husband’s shadow. The British Lady Florence Dixie (1855-1905), the Argentine Eduarda Mansilla de García (1834-1892), and the American Elizabeth Cabot Agassiz (1822-1907) are pionner women that accompany their husbands on travels to foreign lands and assert their independence by writing and publishing travel narratives. I analyze Dixie’s Across Patagonia (1880), Mansilla’s Recuerdos de viaje [Memories from Travels] (1882), and Agassiz’s A Journey in Brazil (1868) to propose that the three traveling vii women writers created an elaborate rhetoric, based on aspects of religion, literature, politics, and science, which shaped the dissemination of knowledge in the nineteenth century. Dixie traveled from England to Patagonia in search of adventure. In the narrative, she defends women’s equal abilities in outdoor sports and women’s smart attire. viii Mansilla traveled from Argentina to the United States. One of the few women travelers with children, she used a discourse of motherhood to establish her point of view: the superiority of Argentina. However, there is a narrative shift in Mansilla’s work because after a few years living in the U.S. she begins to admire American women and the cities’ architecture. Agassiz traveled from the U.S. to Brazil with the Thayer Expedition from 1865 to 1866. Her travel narrative is structured as a scientific account informed by natural history discourse. In her work, Agassiz innovates by including aspects of social organization, an anthropologic view, to her arguments. With travel narratives, Florence Dixie, Eduarda Mansilla, and Elizabeth Agassiz found a way to use their sex and marital status to transcend their husbands’ career and shape the dissemination of knowledge in the nineteenth century. viii 1 INTRODUCTION If steam-powered boats, ships, and trains made traveling accessible in the nineteenth century, print culture made it desirable. Traveling women writers took the opportunity to make the genre of travel writing a textual space of their own. In unprecedented numbers, women writers travelled across the globe and published travel narratives. They became the observers, the voices of authority, and the wielders of the pen. Some pioneer women who undertook the challenge of travelling and publishing their work include British Lady Florence Dixie (1855-1905), Argentine Eduarda Mansilla de García (1834-1892), and the American Elizabeth Cabot Agassiz (1822-1907).1 They are the first women from their respective countries to write a travel narrative about their chosen destinations—Patagonia, the U.S., and Brazil, respectively. Despite their different nationalities, the three authors share a privileged bourgeois identity that enables them to travel abroad and publish their travel narratives. The three women authors are neither fearless transgressors, nor saints or simple feminists. Rather, they add their voices to the predominantly male discourses of the century. By reading journals, literary works, and cultural criticism, this study inserts Brazilian literature and culture into recent debates about translatability, world literature, and cosmopolitanism, while also underscoring the often-overlooked presence of Brazilians in the United States. The first half of the dissertation contends that Portuguese-language periodicals Correio Braziliense (London, 1808-1822), Revista Nitheroy (Paris, 1836), and O Novo Mundo (New York, 1870-1879) translated European and North American ideas of technology and education to a readership primarily in Brazil. The transnational circulation of these periodicals contributed to the self- fashioning of intellectuals who came to define the nation. To suggest parallels between Brazil and the United States in the late 19th century, the analysis of O Novo Mundo focuses on discourses of nation, modernity, and technological progress emerging in the hemispheric travels of scientists, intellectuals, and the Brazilian empire Dom Pedro II, and in the national displays at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

    Edwardian Beverley: a snapshot in time How much do you know about the Edwardian era in England? Strictly, it was the time of King Edward VII’s brief reign from 1901 to 1910, but is usually considered to extend up to the start of war in 1914. It is often seen as a ‘golden age’, when the world paused between the busy industrialisation of the Victorians and the chaos of global war, after which life changed forever. However, although the Edwardian period was short it was a time of great change, from social reforms to fashion trends and technological advances. One of the key technological developments of the period was the introduction of Kodak’s Brownie camera in 1900, which enabled everybody to make their own record of their surroundings. There is therefore a wonderful photographic record of life in Beverley from the turn of the century, which we have drawn upon in this exhibition as we attempt to put the town into the context of the wider world. El Ejército de los Andes fue el primero organizado en nuestro país con un criterio moderno para el cumplimiento de una misión específica. Con él, su creador pudo preparar la campaña para dar la libertad a Chile y Perú. Las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata pudieron entonces disponer de un elemento imprescindible para la existencia de una nación. Así se puso término a la improvisación bélica reinante hasta entonces. San Martín no fue un innovador en la organización de su ejército, salvo en el campo de la Logística, la que le permitió estar al nivel de los pertenecientes a los países más avanzados de su época. La acción del general San Martín en la gestación del ejército merece ser conocida para valorar a quien fue el militar más grande de nuestra historia.
