Newsletter Term 3, Week 7, 2012 Newsletter Term 3, Week 7, 2012 Dates to remember: ‘Christ alone, Cornerstone, Father Day Stall Aug Weak made strong, in the Saviours love, Wednesday 29th Through the storm, He is Lord, School Photos Aug Lord of all.’ Thursday 30th - Lyrics to ‘Cornerstone’ by Hillsong Live 2012. Glee Club Sep Gawler Show 2nd ‘Christ alone, cornerstone.’ These are the powerful words that have stayed with me, and resonated within my spirit since attending the annual Hillsong Conference in Sydney, in the Koorong book Sep recent July holidays. ‘Christ as the cornerstone’ was a theme that encompassed the whole of orders due 6th the conference and my time there. Closing Worship 20th In 1 Peter 2 verse 5 the Bible talks about us as being living stones. ‘you also, like living Thursday Sep stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’ Boat licence night 5th Nov When thinking about our school and its purpose in God’s household, we are reminded through these verses that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves. The foundation of this school was built upon a vision that its German Lutheran founders had for education, but an education that was built primarily on Christ, and His message of hope and love. This foundation stretches right back to the apostles and the prophets and Christ Himself. Our school, built upon this sure and strong foundation, is not just made up of bricks and mortar, for each and every one of us comes together to form living stones, that form a household, a building, a dwelling place, a school community that God Himself is able to dwell in by His Spirit. As a school community, let’s not forget what we are about and whose foundation we are built upon and are building upon. My prayer is that as a community of living stones, that by building upon Christ’s foundation, we may be united in our cause and purpose and that each and every person that comes through our gates would come to know and experience the love and hope of Christ whether it be in their education, or just their everyday encounter with us and our community. May we always be a reflection of His love and forgiveness in our lives. The Institution, the Ethic, and the Affect: The Hillsong Church and the Production of Multiple Affinities of the Self Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts & Commerce, with Honours in Sociology College of Arts & Social Sciences, Australian National University Matthew Wade 2010 1 Unless otherwise acknowledged in the text, this thesis represents the original research of the author: Signed:………………………… Matthew Wade 2 Acknowledgments I would like to express the greatest of thanks to my Honours supervisor, Dr Maria Hynes. Dr Hynes’ relentless positivity, gentle encouragement, and of course brilliant insight were absolutely invaluable. Warm thanks also go to Dr Rachel Bloul and Dr Joanna Sikora for their guidance, as well as my fellow classmates. Lastly, I give guarded thanks to the Hillsong Church, an institution that at once is endlessly fascinating, inspiring, and unnerving. 3 Abstract The Hillsong Church, based in Sydney, is the Australian exemplar of the ‘megachurch’ phenomena, characterised by large, generally non- denominational churches with evangelical, ‘seeker-friendly’ aspirations and adoption of contemporary worship methods. Given the increasingly large following the Church commands, there is surprisingly little scholarly research on Hillsong, particularly from the perspective of Sociology. This study seeks to contribute to a sociological understanding of the phenomenon of Hillsong by analysing the particular ways that its doctrine and practices evoke and respond to crises of the self in modernity. Hillsong does not rail against the developments associated with modernity, rather, the Church consciously evangelises in recognition of them, managing to both empower the individual and also act as a bulwark against more dehumanising elements of modern society.

  • Worshipping Bodies: Affective Labour in the Hillsong Church
bs_bs_banner Worshipping Bodies: Affective Labour in the Hillsong Church MATTHEW WADE* and MARIA HYNES Sociology, Australian National University, Building 22, Acton Canberra, ACT 0200, Australia *Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] Received 1 February 2012; Revised 31 May 2012; Accepted 31 July 2012 Abstract The Australian megachurch, Hillsong, is as well known for its music and spec- tacle as it is for the content of its religious ideas. This is largely due, as Connell argues in his geography of Hillsong, to the peculiar mix of the theological and the modern that a highly globalised and mediatised context can today produce. This paper re-examines the phenomenon of Hillsong through the theory of affect, which has gained notable analytical purchase in geography in recent years. More specifically, it uses the concept of ‘affective labour’ to analyse the specific ways in which bodies are put to work in the spaces of Hillsong worship. We demon- strate the way that Hillsong produces and mobilises affect in order to attain the collective experience of the spectacle, which is so crucial to Hillsong’s visibility as a social phenomenon and also to its recruitment of the individual member into the logic and ethos of the church as a whole. We indicate the importance for the success of Hillsong of producing particular kinds of subject, namely, subjects who are at once comfortable, enthusiastic and loyal. By recruiting its followers as affective labourers towards a shared evangelical cause, the embodied and vaguely felt sense of potential of members is mobilised towards the spectacular phenom- enon that is the Hillsong church.

  • The Case of Australian Christian Youth Festivals
Online religious advertising: 3The case of Australian Christian youth festivals Paul Emerson Teusner1 Abstract his chapter explores the changing nature of Christian denominational Tdiscourse in an Australian context as informed by Internet technologies. It will take as its case study three Internet sites developed and published for the promotion of three separate Christian youth festivals held in Australia between July 2008 and January 2009, undertaking a discursive analysis of their structures, content and design to examine how Internet and institutional religion interact in delivering a Christian message to contemporary Australian young people. The analysis will show that, despite the diverse theological positions, convention goals and approaches to the Internet, all three sites are surprisingly similar in form, while the content stays true to denominational tradition. The study raises questions about the intersection of technology, culture and religion and in particular, how the contours of Christian diversity in Australia are being redrawn, so that membership to a particular denomination, institution or group can no longer define what kind of Christian any Australian is. Keywords: online religion, Australian Christian festivals, youth and Internet. 1. E-mail address: [email protected] How to cite this chapter: Emerson Teusner, P. (2014). Introduction While computer-mediated communication technologies have been in use by some businesses, academic and government organisations in Australia since the 1980s, the Internet as we know it now was not available to the household until the acquisition of business-usage rights by the then largest Australian telecommunications company, Telstra, in 1995.

Frank Houston, a New Zealander, served as superintendent of the Assemblies of God in New Zealand from 1965 to 1971. In 1977, Houston moved to Sydney and founded his own church, known as the Sydney Christian Life Centre. Affiliated churches were quickly established. Brian joined the church network in 1978 and was leading his own congregations from 1980. In 1983, Brian, with his wife Bobbie, founded Hills Christian Life Centre, and the associated music label, Hillsong, in the Hills District of Sydney, Australia. Affiliated churches were established through the 1980s and 1990s, and spread to other countries. The London church was formed in 1992.
