Today, WeHo hosts free Seismic Retrofit Resource Fair

The city of West Hollywood invites community members and property owners to attend the West Hollywood Seismic Retrofit Resource Fair on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Great Hall. The free event includes design professionals and contractors spe- cializing in seismic retrofit work. West Hollywood staff members and experts on topics such as struc- tural engineering will answer ques- tions and offer technical advice for property owners. The city of West Hollywood takes a proactive approach to seis- mic safety. While no building is earthquake-proof, retrofitting buildings will save lives, protect property and minimize damage during major earthquakes. The resource fair will provide residential and commercial proper- ty owners with information and resources for seismic retrofitting so they can comply with mandatory strengthening requirements for cer- tain types of existing buildings under the city’s seismic retrofit ordinances. In 2017, the West Hollywood City Council adopted two ordi- nances establishing a framework for the seismic retrofit of existing wood-frame buildings with soft, weak or open front wall lines; non- ductile concrete buildings; and pre- Northridge Earthquake steel moment frame buildings. In April 2018, the city uploaded a visual survey of properties sub- ject to the ordinances on its online open data portal. Property owners will be required to demonstrate that their buildings are in compliance with the ordinances or will be required to complete seismic retro- fitting on their buildings.
