We Are Honored to Again Be Recognized by Wine Spectator We are honored to again be recognized by Wine Spectator 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 The Story of Wine at Noto’s Old World Italian Dining ine is simply my passion! The first spark of interest in wine came at an early age for me. I remember Wgrandpa’s homemade wine tapped from the barrel of his special “cellar” selection, placed on the table for Sunday dinner. The hobby of wine making in my family ended with my father who proudly made his last batch of wine with grandpa in 1956. Although my father and grandpa wouldn’t rank amongst the top wine makers past or present, they had a passion about wine that was passed down to me. I have had the opportunity to travel to Italy many times to gain more wine and cultural knowledge for me to share with others. I have spent time with winemakers all over Italy. I always say wine tastes best when your are drinking it in Italy....the next best thing is to drink it with friends at Noto’s! I have toured these prominent vineyards and wineries and I am happy to represent them on our wine list: Ratti, Sandrone, Pio Cesare, Vietti, G.D. Vajra, Cantina del Pino, Marcarini, San Silvestro, Rocca della Macìe, Col d’Orcia, Bertani, Cavit, Falesco, Castello di Bossi, Cecchi, Banfi, Feudo Maccari, and Planeta. I will keep you posted on my next visit. My Italian heritage will always shine through in our restaurant and this wine list. Perhaps the only down fall is that I don’t drink as many wines from around the rest of the world. Our family purchased the old Bil-Mar restaurant in Grand Haven on Lake Michigan. It is called Noto’s at the Bil-Mar. It is a beautiful beach restaurant open for lunch and dinner. This has given me the opportunity to write a wine list that has representation from around the world including a strong selection of Italian wines. Our beach restaurant opened in 2019!! We hope you will come visit us soon! I love to discover more about wine. I learn by working with my suppliers who teach me about the newest wines available in Michigan. I learn through my travels to Italy. But most of all, I learn when I talk with our guests who share their experiences in wine and travel. I am most proud of our wine list at Noto’s because we have collected some of the highest rated Italian wines produced, coupled with very small boutique wineries that make some of the most phenomenal wines I’ve ever tasted. With over 1,200 Italian wines on our list and representation from all 20 wine producing regions, I’m sure we will find that special one for you. I am the luckiest person in the world to have the opportunity to take my interest in wine and have it evolve into a passion that I hope to share with anyone who hears the “pop” of a cork releasing from that special vintage wine. Saluté, Joann Noto This wine list is dedicated to the memory of my friend, George Pecor, who shared his knowledge of Italian wine with me and my family. It is possible to rent the entire property for exclusive use - "Total Nisa" or just one apartment - "Terra Nisa" for the ground floor apartment, "Sopra Nisa" for the first floor apartment. By renting the entire structure you have the exclusive use of the swimming pool and the park, while if you rent an apartment the pool and park are shared with the guests of the other apartment. 5 La storia Monte Nisa is a villa built in 1934 on the top of a hill in Tuscany, in the Chianti Classico wine production area. Its quiet, panoramic and sunny position was chosen with great care and passion by the first owner, named Manetti, and the original toponym of "Villa Manetto" derived from his name. Manetti designed the villa to make it his "buen retiro" following and personally directing the construction work and taking care of every little detail. Subsequently the heirs sold the villa which since then experienced a troubled period, becoming from time to time a summer colony, recreational club, warehouse and even military command during the Second World War, suffering damage due to cannon fire.

  • Fit for Kings BAROLO, the Legendary Italian Grape of Yore, IS RIPE for ASIAN ROYALTY, WRITES JAMES SUCKLING
Fit for Kings BAROLO, THE LEGENDARY ITALIAN GRAPE OF YORE, IS RIPE FOR ASIAN ROYALTY, WRITES JAMES SUCKLING taly’s great grape, barolo, has long been called the “king of wines and the wine of kings.” But the structured red still remains relatively undiscovered in most of Asia. “It’s still hard to convince most fine-wine lovers in Asia about Barolo, even though our region is very much like Burgundy with its mostly small vineyard holdings and Ifamily-owned wineries,” says Pio Boffa, the owner of Pio Cesare, one of the top names in Barolo. Boffa adds that most of the top wines are made in limited quantities – as little as a few hundred cases. Indeed, Barolo tastes like red Burgundy of Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, in many ways. It has a lighter colour than considered two of the great wine towns in most other reds, a delicate and complex fruit the region; Barolo has its top villages as well, character, and bright and lively acidity. The including La Morra, Serralunga, Monforte d’Alba big difference is that the grape of Barolo, and Barolo itself. Furthermore, each village, Nebbiolo, is much more tannic compared to whether in Barolo or Burgundy, has its own top Burgundy’s pinot noir. Yet, better viticulture and vineyard sites. The French have codified this into winemaking in Barolo has produced reds with an appellation system, so grand crus such as La riper and softer tannins than in the past. Romanée in Vosne-Romanée and Chambertin in Paolo Damilano, whose family makes excellent Gevrey-Champertin are ranked among the best Barolos under its namesake, agrees.

  • January 3, 2013 Dining & Wine WINES of the TIMES a Shy Italian
Published: January 3, 2013 Dining & Wine WINES OF THE TIMES A Shy Italian, Made for Everyday Tony Cenicola/The New York Times By ERIC ASIMOV WHAT is greatness? When that question is asked about wine, it sometimes is answered too narrowly. With food, most people recognize that all sorts of meals can satisfy and delight. A magnificent feast at a culinary temple does not cloud the ability to appreciate the pleasure of a perfect hamburger, or a chicken judiciously salted and well roasted. A great novel does not diminish the enjoyment of a well-turned historical romance. Nor does a cinematic triumph demean a good thriller. While acknowledging a hierarchy of genres, excellence is excellence. Yet with wine, we sometimes overlook a mountain of potential pleasures for the peak experience. I know more than a few people who believe that if a wine is not a benchmark bottle — a top Burgundy, Bordeaux or the equivalent — it’s not worth drinking. It’s a kind of blindness reserved for those who have never felt moved by the everyday joy that wine can offer, and who consequently measure all wines on a single scale rather than adjust their scales according to context. The wine panel recently found the perfect case in point: the dolcetto wines of the Langhe region of northwestern Italy. There, a hierarchy is clear. The nebbiolo grape rules. A good, well-aged Barolo or Barbaresco, the major nebbiolo Tasting Report wines, is a transcendent The panel tasted dolcettos, a blend of bitter and sweet, all under pleasure, one that speaks both $25.

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno, `Conca Tre Pile` Barbera D'alba 2009 Langhe, Piemonte, Italy
Poderi Aldo Conterno, `Conca Tre Pile` Barbera d'Alba 2009 Langhe, Piemonte, Italy PRODUCER Aldo Conterno is one of the historic names of Italian wine. The Conterno family has been making wine in Monforte since at least the 1700s. Aldo's grandfather, Giovanni Conterno, founded his own winery in 1908 which was then run by his son, Giacomo. After a stint in the USA in the 1950s, Aldo worked with his older brother Giovanni in this winery until he decided to strike out on his own in 1969. Aldo's three sons now make the wine (Stefano) and run the business (Franco and Giacomo). Over the years, production has been deliberately reduced and the family now produces 80,000 bottles rather than the 200,000 produced in 1998. VINEYARDS The grapes are grown in the Conca Tre Pile vineyard which is a steeply sloping part of the Bussia Soprana hill in Monforte d'Alba. The Barbera vines are 46 years old on average. VINTAGE The 2009 vintage began with a winter marked by heavy snowfalls. Early spring was rainy but summer was dry and helped by excellent water reserves in the soil. These reserves proved to be of vital importance in the summer, averting any water stress-related problems which could have occurred due to the almost total lack of rain and the intense heat during the summer months, especially during the second half of August. Picking of Barbera began around the first week of October. VINIFICATION Maceration and fermentation occurred in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks between 26-28°C.

Following some rain in spring, from the second half of June throughout the month of July, there was no rain and temperatures were higher than usual, hitting peaks of around 40°C. However, the plentiful water supplies which had accumulated during the early months of the year meant the vines avoided hydric stress. This hot weather did mean that particular attention had to be paid to the management of the foliage to protect the grapes from scorching, but it also kept fungal pressure low.

  • Poderi Aldo Conterno
January 25, 2018 Poderi Aldo Conterno hen I was planning our European travel schedule for last year, I realised it had been 20 years since I’d visited one of the W world’s great wine estates, Poderi Aldo Conterno in the Barolo district of north-western Italy. The years had flown, and it was time to return. Adrienne and I were warmly welcomed by Giacomo Conterno, one of three brothers who nurture a proud heritage. Their father Aldo, who passed away in 2012, was revered as a giant of Barolo. * Poderi translates to farm or estate. Poderi Aldo Conterno Poderi Aldo Conterno is inextricably linked to Bussia, a vineyard, that, in Piemonte terms, is a sacred site. Bussia was one of the first two cru, along with Rocche di Castiglione, to be declared (in 1961) on a Barolo label. Covering 298.89 ha, 98.5% of which is within the boundaries of Monforte d'Alba, it contains 15 officially designated vineyards, the names of which can be appended to Bussia on labels. Within three of these, Colonello, Cicala and Romirasco, beats the heart of Poderi Aldo Conterno. They lie within a stone’s throw of each other on prime, south- west-facing slopes of limestone and clay. Organic viticulture is practised because, in Giacomo’s words, “I wanted my children to be able to touch the leaves of the vines without being afraid.” The red wines are made in a very straightforward way, fermented in stainless steel tanks (about one month skin contact for nebbiolo, with a maximum temperature of 32ºC, and 8-10 days on skins for barbera, with a maximum temperature of 28ºC.
