Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 4, 2014 Devils-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press January 4, 2014 The Buffalo Sabres may own the fewest points in the NHL, but they've hardly resembled the league's worst team lately at home. Ryan Miller has had a hand in that success. Miller will likely be in net looking to win a sixth straight home game, as the Sabres face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Buffalo (11-26-4) not only has the worst record in the league, its average of 1.63 goals ranks last - 0.60 behind Minnesota for 29th. The Sabres fell 4-1 at Minnesota on Thursday, losing their 11th straight on the road. "It's just one of those things where when we're bad, we're bad," interim coach Ted Nolan said. They've been very good at home, however, going 5-0-1 in their last six home games. They're averaging 2.75 goals to win four straight there for the first time since a five-game streak from Feb. 19-March 12, 2012. Miller has been superb at home, compiling a 1.34 goals-against average and .962 save percentage while winning his last five games in Buffalo. He last won six straight there from Nov. 13-Dec. 9, 2010. Miller, named to the U.S. Olympic team earlier this week, may have a chance to equal that run since he's 4-1-1 with a 1.60 GAA and a shutout over his last six home meetings with the Devils (17-17-8).

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 18, 2014 Sabres-Flames Preview Associated Press March 17, 2014 Jhonas Enroth will not join the Buffalo Sabres on their five-game road swing, and with backup Michal Neuvirth also injured, the league's worst team will likely begin its trip with a No. 1 goaltender who has 22 minutes of NHL game experience under his belt. Nathan Lieuwen will probably make his first career start Tuesday night when the Sabres take on the Calgary Flames. Enroth sustained a lower-body injury in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Montreal. ''He's going to get further evaluation and stay behind,'' coach Ted Nolan said Monday. ''Right now it looks at least a little bit better today than it did yesterday.'' After the Sabres (19-41-8) flew out of Buffalo on Monday, Enroth posted on his Twitter account a photo of his right leg in an immobilizing device and wrote, ''For the next couple weeks ... " Lieuwen stopped all 10 shots he faced in his NHL debut Sunday after being called up from AHL Rochester earlier in the day. Buffalo also called up Matt Hackett from Rochester on Monday to back up Lieuwen. Hackett, a former third-round draft pick, played 13 games with Minnesota from 2011-13 before the Sabres traded for him last April 3. Nolan said Neuvirth will travel with the Sabres, but his status for Tuesday is up in the air. Neuvirth has missed two games with a lower-body injury, but was able to work out on the ice Monday.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 12, 2013 Sabres-Blackhawks Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press October 12, 2013 The Buffalo Sabres are off to their worst start in 14 years. Facing the reigning Stanley Cup champions on the road isn't likely to change that. The Sabres attempt to avoid a sixth straight defeat Saturday night when they meet the Chicago Blackhawks. Buffalo (0-4-1) hasn't endured a worst start to a season since going 0-5-2 to begin 1999-2000. The Sabres have shown few signs of ending their struggles, getting outscored 14-5 while going 2 for 18 on the power play. "We have guys in here that can make plays," goaltender Ryan Miller said. "We just have to get past this little hump we're having trouble with and you can't just work hard, get a puck and not do anything with it. We have to start doing things with it." Buffalo didn't do much Thursday, giving up three first-period goals in a 4-1 home loss to Columbus. Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson have been among the few offensive bright spots with four points each over the past three games. Those two have combined for eight of the team's 13 points this season. Vanek, the captain for home games, had team highs of 20 goals and 41 points in 38 games last season. He's been limited to two assists in four career visits to Chicago. Hodgson has four points in four meetings with the Blackhawks, who have won three straight games versus Buffalo, including the last two at the United Center.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 13, 2015 Sabres’ McCormick out of hospital after blood clot treatment By Staff Report Associated Press January 12, 2015 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Sabres forward Cody McCormick has been released from the hospital after being treated for having a blood clot in his leg. Coach Ted Nolan said following practice Monday that McCormick is recuperating at home. Nolan called it a good sign, but cautioned there is no timetable for the player's return. McCormick was hospitalized over the weekend after the clot was discovered. He scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Friday. The Sabres called up forwards Phil Varone and Zac Dalpe from their AHL affiliate in Rochester. Dalpe has yet to play for the Sabres since signing with the team last summer. Varone is back in Buffalo after playing three games last week. Buffalo hosts Detroit on Tuesday night. Red Wings happy to be part of tribute to Hasek By Mike Harrington Buffalo News January 12, 2015 After all the Vezina and Hart trophies, after No Goal and the killer overtime losses in Games Six and Seven against Pittsburgh that finally ended his Buffalo career in 2001, Dominik Hasek forced a trade to Detroit to pursue his Stanley Cup. It turned out Hasek got two of them, one as the Red Wings’ key man in goal in 2002 and the other as Chris Osgood’s backup in his 2008 swan song to the NHL. So it’s more than appropriate the Wings will be on the other side of the ice tonight when the No.

  • The 1962 Grey Cup: Played in a Fog
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 13, No. 6 (1991) The 1962 Grey Cup: Played in a Fog by Jack Ziegler Most pro football games take 3 to 3 1/2 hours to complete. However, when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers met the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the Grey Cup Championship in 1962 the game took 25 hours because of fog delay. Or as Bobby Kuntz of the Ti-Cats put it: “I waited seven years to play in a Grey Cup game and then I get two in two days.” The Grey Cup game was scheduled for 1 p.m. on December 1, 1962 in Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition stadium. As early as 30 November, league and club officials were concerned about the heavy fog in Toronto. Joseph Sheehan of the New York Times reported that “It was so foggy ...in downtown Toronto that until noon it was impossible to see across even a narrow street.” Yet by 11:30 a.m. on game day things seemed to be going well. While there was heavy fog over Lake Ontario, weather at CNE stadium was delightful with the temperature in the fifties and sunny skies. But by 1 p.m. kickoff time the field was covered with haze as prevailing winds began to move the fog in from the lake. By the end of the first quarter there were dense patches of fog on the field that eventually became a solid mass. From the stands and the press box, fans and reporters could only see halfway across the 65 yard wide field.

  • Press Clips November 2, 2014
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips November 2, 2014 Sabres-Penguins Preview By Jeff Bartl Associated Press October 31, 2014 Evgeni Malkin missed the entire preseason, but that hasn't stopped him from getting off to the best start of his career and being the top contributor on thePittsburgh Penguins' league-best power-play unit. He'll look to help Pittsburgh earn a fourth straight victory as it hosts the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Malkin began practicing just two days before the Penguins' season opener as he recovered from an undisclosed injury, and said it took time to get back into game shape. The results have shown otherwise, though, as the former MVP and two-time Art Ross Trophy winner has four goals - all on the power play - and eight assists while earning a point in all nine games for Pittsburgh (6-2-1). Malkin's eight power-play points are among the most in the league for a Penguins team that leads the NHL by a wide margin. Pittsburgh has converted 39.5 percent of its opportunities with the man advantage, and it's gone 7 for 16 during the winning streak. "I just do my job," Malkin said. "We have a great line with (Pascal Dupuis) and (Blake) Comeau. We try to use each other. A good power play, too. Most (of my) points are on the power play, but still a couple chances 5 on 5." Rookie coach Mike Johnston has been impressed with Malkin's level of play after working his way back from the injury.

  • 44Th Annual Leo Boivin International Midget AA/AAA Showcase
44th Annual Leo Boivin International Midget AA/AAA Showcase March , 2017 LEO BOIVIN This esteemed hockey showcase proudly carries the name of Prescott native, and NHL legend Leo Boivin. Leo Boivin began playing hockey at the age of seven on the St. Lawrence River and outdoor ice surfaces of Prescott, Ontario, near Ottawa. It was with the Bruins that Leo's reputation as a hard-hitting, defenseman grew. Tim Horton regarded him to be the toughest blue liner to beat in a one-on-one situation. He was nicknamed "Fireplug" for his compact stature and devastating body checks. Although there were bigger men on the blue line, especially closer the end of his career, none hit harder than Leo Boivin. After retiring, he stayed in the game as a scout. He went behind the bench as the interim coach of the St. Louis Blues during the 1975-76 and 1977-78 seasons, and coached the Ottawa 67's of the OHL for a time, but at the end of the day he preferred scouting to coaching. Leo Boivin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986. Nowadays, Leo can be found at the arena named after him during the tournament weekend, smiling for photos with fans and enjoying great Midget hockey. Be sure to say hello! HISTORY Now in its 44th year, this tournament has come a long way from the eight team one-day event first started in 1972 to the current 16 team tournament that welcomes the world! This tournament has set the standard, with its reputation for hospitality and excellent organization.
