The mile walk out onto the pier has become a Buf- falo Tourist attraction. A must see to visitors. You see the rushing turbulent water of the Niagara River on one side, Northwest Buffalo Beat and the serene calm waters of the canal on the other. You may even see a large ship pass. You can hear the thunder of the trucks and cars over head as you pass under the Peace Bridge. Out far enough you can see the Buffalo sky- by Joe Bortz line. Across the river you can see the old fort at Fort Erie. Terrific view. If you do not mind driving in the dark walking out to Bird Island/Nowak Pier the end and watching the sunset, it is exhilarating and Back in 1860 a small island existed out in Lake Erie called Bird Island. In order for breathtaking. Long walk back in the dark. Did it many ships to pass safely from Lake Erie into the Black Rock Channel and then into the Erie times, even before there was a walkway. Fish seem to bite Barge Canal, it became necessary for a breakwall to be built. This wall would separate better at dusk. the raging Niagara River and form a calmer waterway easier for large barges to navigate. This breakwall was constructed from the southern tip of what was then called Squaw Is- land out to this tiny island. Hence it was called the Bird Island pier. Mostly constructed of huge rocks and concrete just randomly dumped with no design. All it was intended to be was a breakwater. That it was for years. It had no other use except for being a good fishing spot and a place to swim.
Back in the 1920’s the pier was used for fishing and swimming. Notice no Peace Bridge but you can see the grain elevators and even the water intake near Bird Island.

This is what the pier looked like in the 70’s. It was this way when I was a kid. Still we ventured out on it as it was a great place to swim (if you were a good swimmer) and fish. Caught lots of yellow pike out a little further than the bridge. It was dangerous as some times the water would pour over the wall in low spots leaving fishermen trapped out on the wall and needing to be rescued. It was still worth it.
