Band: Heidevolk (NL) Genre: Folk Metal Label: Napalm Records Album Titel: Velua Spielzeit: 56:16 VÖ: 27.03.2015 Band: Heidevolk (NL) Genre: Folk Metal Label: Napalm Records Album Titel: Velua Spielzeit: 56:16 VÖ: 27.03.2015 Das Gelderland schlägt wieder zu! Punkte: 8,5/10 Anspieltipps: Herboren In Vlammen, Velua, Vinland Metal Only e.V. Lorin Renodeyn Historical Linguistics and Literature Studies Old Germanic Heritage In Metal Music A Comparative Study Of Present-day Metal Lyrics And Their Old Germanic Sources Promotor: Prof. Dr. Luc de Grauwe Vakgroep Duitse Taalkunde Preface In recent years, heathen past of Europe has been experiencing a small renaissance. Especially the Old Norse / Old Germanic neo-heathen (Ásatrú) movement has gained popularity in some circles and has even been officially accepted as a religion in Iceland and Norway among others1. In the world of music, this renaissance has led to the development of several sub-genres of metal music, the so-called ‘folk metal’, ‘Viking Metal’ and ‘Pagan Metal’ genres. Acknowledgements First and foremost I would like to thank my promoter, prof. dr. Luc de Grauwe, for allowing me to choose the subject for this dissertation and for his guidance in the researching process. Secondly I would like to thank Sofie Vanherpen for volunteering to help me with practical advice on the writing process, proof reading parts of this dissertation, and finding much needed academic sources. Furthermore, my gratitude goes out to Athelstan from Forefather and Sebas from Heidevolk for their co- operation in clarifying the subjects of songs and providing information on the sources used in the song writing of their respective bands. I also want to thank Cris of Svartsot for providing lyrics, translations, track commentaries and information on how Svartsot’s lyrics are written. Last but not least I want to offer my thanks to my family and friends who have pointed out interesting facts and supported me in more than one way during the writing of this dissertation.

  • Few Could Have Envisioned the Bright Future That the Norns Had in Store for HEIDEVOLK Back in 2002
Few could have envisioned the bright future that the Norns had in store for HEIDEVOLK back in 2002. Since its inception in Arnhem (the Netherlands) thirteen years ago, HEIDEVOLK came, saw, and conquered stages throughout Europe with their very own brand of folk metal. Instantly recognizable dual clean male vocals and irresistibly catchy songs have ignited the pagan fire in the souls of many on the continent. They deliver their songs on divine matters and profane pleasures with equal integrity, fueled by a folkloric fire and pagan pride. With a repertoire ranging from epic to raging, captivating live shows and an undying desire to perform, HEIDEVOLK has become a familiar face Europe and in North and South America. HEIDEVOLK stands for an uncompromising attitude, intense shows, and the transcendence of barriers between performer and audience… even if your Dutch sucks! In 2005, HEIDEVOLK released its first CD, “De strijdlust is geboren”, followed by the “Wodan Heerst” EP in 2007. The sophomore full-length CD ‘Walhalla Wacht’ (Napalm Records) saw its worldwide release in 2008. The internationally well received third full- length, “Uit oude grond” (2010) and the more aggressive concept album BATAVI (2012) followed. In 2015 HEIDEVOLK stunned the scene with their beautiful masterpiece VELUA, a journey through a world of myths and legends of the Veluwe, Netherlands. Now at the dawn of 2018 HEIDEVOLK is back and brings you the ageless story of revolt and resistance captured in their most varied and mature release to date called “VUUR VAN VERZET”. “Vuur van Verzet” (“Fire of Resistance”) catapults you back in time to a battlefield where a failing Roman empire is retreating and Germanic tribes are on the rise to claim back what is theirs.

[Inter]sections 23 (2020): 59-76 Irina-Maria Manea* Aesthetic Heathenism: Pagan Revival in Extreme Metal Music Keywords: metal music, identity, Paganism, mythology, heritage. Abstract: Neopaganism, briefly defined as the attempt to reconstruct and reinterpret pre-Christian heritage, is not confined to purely religious movements. A romanticized view of ancestral religion particularly expressed through an extensive use of mythological elements adapted to a contemporary context now represents a fundamental part of certain scenes that utilize them to construct a primordialist view of the past. Pagan metal makes use of religion and mythology as a form of cultural capital to suggest cultural distinctiveness in order to create an alternative antimodern, conservative discourse to mainstream culture. Artists attempt to forge and empower a new identity shaped by language, music, style, behavior and values when they, for instance, dwell on old myths which they recontextualize according to their own agenda. Starting from an exploration of American and European pagan revivalist movements, this paper pinpoints the main characteristics of the relationship between Neopaganism and musical expression by evoking and commenting on textual and non-textual evidence in an attempt to offer a paradigm for understanding the intersections between spirituality and popular culture. On a more or less serious note, several popular music genres explore and celebrate Pagan histories and mythologies in order to shape what can be deemed an aesthetic code rather than an ideology. They employ loose artistic expressions that make use of a constellation of images taken from ancient histories and myths in the form of a romanticized golden past. Pagan elements are used in folk, punk or metal communities in order to construct artistic as well as regional or national identities, ranging from the carnivalesque to the political extreme (such as National Socialist Black Metal, on the fringes of the metal scene).

_Cultural Heritage and History in the Metal Scene _reem saouma_sophia molpheta simon pille_stefan de klepper Cultural heritage and History in the Metal Scene Cultural Heritage And History in the Metal Scene Belvedere Chair in The Chairgroup Land Use Planning Roel During, Marieke Muilwijk Wageningen, October 2007 Stefan de Klepper_forest and nature conservation Sophia Molpheta_landscape architecture and planning Simon Pille_landscape architecture and planning Reem Saouma_landscape architecture and planning abstract abstract This paper represents an inquiry on the use of history and cultural heritage in the metal scene. It is an attempt to show how history and cultural heritage can possibly be spread among people using an unconventional way. The followed research method was built on an explorative study that included an analysis of elements of the music, such as lyrics, performance and fashion, together with interviews of bands and people from the metal scene. However, the study focused on five different metal styles in Europe: the early metal (60’s and early 70’s), The new wave of British heavy metal (around the 80’s), the Swedish death metal (’90-present), the Norwegian black metal (’90-present) and the folk metal (mid 90’s-present). The analysis shows that cultural history plays a role in certain styles of metal or particular bands. Especially in Black metal and in the closely related Viking metal, the use of history and cultural heritage is most common. There are bands within these styles that tell stories through their lyrics and express the historical feeling by the overall image and appearances at concerts. The research shows how history and cultural heritage are used by many bands as an inspiration as well as how it can play a role in forming a common identity among fans and musicians.
