The organisation, along with the Israel Centre, was excited to recently send a delegation of artists and photographers from the Beit Shemesh-Mateh Yehuda region to Cape Town. These delegates ran creative activities and workshops with an Israeli theme in the Cape Town Jewish community. These included wonderful programmes at schools that are twinned with Beit Shemesh-Mateh Yehuda schools, such as Phyllis Jowell Jewish Day School, Herzlia Constantia and The photographers addressing Herzlia Middle School. ISRAEL LEADS THE WAY IN HUMANITARIAN AID The modern State of Israel began as a struggling new nation, but over the last 65 years has become a thriving and vibrant state. In realms such as agriculture, medicine, technology and education, Israel has achieved a tremendous amount and made groundbreaking progress. In all of these areas, the Jewish state has repeatedly sought to offer assistance to countries around the world.

EDUCATIONAL • The Golda Meir Mount Carmel International Training Centre trains women involved in community work in Africa ASSISTANCE and Asia. • The Weitz Centre aims to improve social and economic conditions worldwide. Students from the developing world visit Israel and learn about industry and development in rural areas. • Based on the success of youth villages for Israeli orphans, the Rwanda Agahozo-Shalom Youth Centre was established for orphans of the Rwandan genocide.

EMERGENCY • Israel Defence Forces rescue teams have responded to earthquakes all over the world including Mexico, Armenia, ASSISTANCE Turkey, El Salvador, , Peru, Indonesia and Haiti. • Israel has sent rescue teams to respond to flooding disasters in Central America, Sri Lanka and Romania. • Israel responded to the Rwandan refugee crisis of 1994 by establishing of a field hospital in Zaire where medical aid was given to numerous refugees.

The introduction of Bti along the Yangtze River in China has resulted in a 90% decrease in malarial infections. It has also saved the sight of millions in Africa by controlling river blindness.

AGRICULTURAL • Israeli irrigation specialists from the agribusiness Netafim work alongside farmers from various countries including ASSISTANCE Poland and Turkmenistan, training them in ways to improve crop yields as well as preserving the environment. • The Volcani Centre in Israel is an agricultural research hub. It has amalgamated with 32 countries to help developing nations expand their food production, especially in the dairy industry. • Witchweed is a parasite that damages crops in the sub-Saharan desert and causes poor crop yields. Israeli scientists have successfully developed types of corn that are able to resist witchweed. This has resulted in crop yields in Africa seeing a significant improvement.

DEVELOPMENT • The Israel Centre for International Cooperation, also known as MASHAV helps developing countries with ASSISTANCE environmental, educational and emergency preparedness. Each year hundreds of courses are held and over 250 000 participants have been trained. • Ben-Gurion University developed an important model for increasing economic growth whilst reducing inequality. In 2006 the Israeli plan was applied by the Brazilian state of Ceara and is now being used in different parts of South America. • Israel develops irrigation and desalination schemes that are utilised in India. As a result, there has been a reduction in waste and more of India’s citizens have access to fresh water.

ISRAELI NGO BRINGS AID TO SYRIAN REFUGEES • Tens of thousands of Syrians have had to flee their homes due to the current crisis. An Israeli NGO, operating for the past 13 years, has been delivering hundreds of tons of food, medication and basic home items to Syrian refugees. • The mission of the NGO is to provide lifesaving aid to people affected by human conflicts or natural disasters. The work of the NGO is highly sensitive and in order to protect the lives of team members it has to remain anonymous. • The organisation is made up of over 1000 Israeli volunteers who work in total cooperation with democratic, secular Syrian groups on the ground. • The activity of the organisation is called ‘IL4Syrians’ and the group has distributed a wide range of essentials including food, toothpaste, soap, sanitation items, mattresses and blankets. Emergency medical aid including medication, surgical supplies and field surgery tents, has also been provided. • The Israeli group has been active in countries including Pakistan, Iraq and Sudan, carrying out undercover humanitarian work.
