GOVERNMENT OF INDIA CIVIL AVIATION LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:452 ANSWERED ON:14.07.2014 UPGRADATION OF AIRPORTS Chaudhary Shri P.P. Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government proposes to upgrade certain airports in the country including Jodhpur Airport to International Airports; (b) if so, the details thereof along with the names of the airports selected for this purpose; (c) whether the Government has received any proposals in this regard and if so, the details thereof along with the action taken thereon; (d) whether the Government has also received any proposal to increase the number of flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Jodhpur; and (e) if so, the details thereof and the response of the Government thereto? Answer Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri G. M. Siddeshwara) (a), (b) & (c): Upgradation of an airport as International Airport depends upon various factors like traffic potential, demand from airlines for operation of international flights and presence of following facilities: (i) Runway length of 9000 feet to cater to medium capacity long-range aircraft or equivalent type of aircraft, (ii) Availability of Ground Lighting Facilities, Instrument Landing System, for operation of aircraft at night. (iii) Availability of Customs, Immigration, Health and Animal & Plant Quarantine services. Jodhpur Airport belongs to Indian Air Force (IAF) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) maintains only a Civil Enclave. At present there is no proposal to upgrade Jodhpur Airport as an International Airport. Presently, the Government is considering the proposals to declare Bhopal, Indore and Raipur airports as International airports. (d) & (e) : No, Madam. There is no such proposal at present. .

The arrival lounge at Jodhpur airport has two young, good looking women wel- coming people who walk from the plane since the airport is a small one. For a moment I am amazed at the famed Rajasthani hospitality till I realise that the welcome is for the guests coming for a mega Marwari wedding of two NRI ty- coons which is going to be held in true, Ham Aapke Hain Kaun style at the Umaidh Bhawan Palace hotel! The drive from the airport to the hotel is a short one and one doesn’t really get to see the city. But the wide, divided roads are certainly noticeable- a feature that is evident in all of Jodhpur except the old city. The city is a fairly large one, being the gateway to Marwar as also to the Thar desert. We take an auto to the Umaidh Bhawan Palace. The Umaidh Bhawan Palace (and hotel) is the largest private residence in the world. It was built during the 1930s, partly as a royal NREGA scheme during the famine by Maharaja Umaidh Singh. Built on a hill, it has an imposing view of the whole city of Jodhpur. The palace has been divided into three parts- the main part is a super-luxury hotel which regularly features in the Best Hotels of the world list. Then one part has been retained by the present Maharaja as his pri- vate residence and small part onto a side has been converted into a museum. The museum is basically a collection of some of the stuff used by the royal family over the years- dinner sets, weapons, furniture and other royal paraphernalia.
