McCauley, Lay of Lachen The Sikkim region of the Himalaya is so small that originally it was classified as part of Nepal Himalaya in the 1860s in a study conducted by Sir Sydney Burrard, the Surveyor-General of India from 1910 to 1919. This diminutive state to the north of Darjeeling, the famous hill town in West Bengal, stretches for about 110 km from north to south, and for 65 km from east to west. The Kangchenjunga (now also known as the Khangchendzonga), at 8,586 m the third highest peak in the world, is situated here. The original inhabitants of Sikkim were the Lepchas whose language and physical features tend to identify them as the ancient tribe that is believed to have migrated from southern Tibet during the 15th century. Very few Lepchas remain today, and the population largely consists of the Nepalis who arrived in Sikkim during the early 20th century in search of livelihood. Sikkim was an independent kingdom until a series of events caused the British to take full control of the region in 1861. In the early 19th century, the East India Company settled a dispute between Sikkim and Nepal in favour of the former, in the process assuming certain protective rights and gaining control over the Sikkimese army. In 1834, the East India Company helped the Chogyal of Sikkim in repulsing the Nepalese army, and as a gesture of goodwill, the Chogyal presented it with the present day Darjeeling and the Singalila ridge, a small track immediately surrounding it.

Of which one of the subdivision falls under plain area (Siliguri have been excluded, from the study. The rest of the three subdivisions viz. For a moment I am amazed at the famed Rajasthani hospitality till I realise that the welcome is for the guests coming for a mega Marwari wedding of two NRI ty- coons which is going to be held in true, Ham Aapke Hain Kaun style at the Umaidh Bhawan Palace hotel! The drive from the airport to the hotel is a short one and one doesn’t really get to see the city. But the wide, divided roads are certainly noticeable- a feature that is evident in all of Jodhpur except the old city. The city is a fairly large one, being the gateway to Marwar as also to the Thar desert. We take an auto to the Umaidh Bhawan Palace. The Umaidh Bhawan Palace (and hotel) is the largest private residence in the world. It was built during the 1930s, partly as a royal NREGA scheme during the famine by Maharaja Umaidh Singh. Built on a hill, it has an imposing view of the whole city of Jodhpur. The palace has been divided into three parts- the main part is a super-luxury hotel which regularly features in the Best Hotels of the world list. Then one part has been retained by the present Maharaja as his pri- vate residence and small part onto a side has been converted into a museum. The museum is basically a collection of some of the stuff used by the royal family over the years- dinner sets, weapons, furniture and other royal paraphernalia.
