The number 15 was a favorite for us this year as we talk about our beginning, our existence today and the future of the Double H Ranch. This year we celebrated our 15th year; the cost to sponsor a camper for a ‘Week in the Woods’ this summer was $1,500; and our goal for Keeping the Promise, a Board Designated Fund established to ensure the delivery on a promise made to one camper that the Double H will be here for kids and families dealing with life-threatening illnesses for years to come is $15 million.

And, most important of all, we celebrated bringing smiles to the faces of over 15,000 children and their families in our 15-year history.

our History

The Double H Ranch, located in New York’s Adirondack Park, is a bold demonstration of the commitment and generosity of philanthropist Charles R. Wood and actor Paul Newman. Since the Ranch officially opened its doors on July 4, 1993, it has served over 16,000 children dealing with life- threatening illnesses from around the world. It was the second “Hole in the Wall Camp” in what has become a worldwide network of not-for-profit recreational and therapeutic experiences for children with serious illness. Named after the gang in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” “The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps” serve over 10,000 children annually, free-of-charge.

In 1991, entrepreneur Charley Wood purchased the 320-acre Hidden Valley Ranch property with the intention of expanding the original concept of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp to his beloved Adirondacks. Mr. Wood, a long-time supporter of the arts and medicine, drew his inspiration from the Connecticut camp started by Mr. Newman in 1988, and enlisted Mr. Newman’s support to help create the Double H Ranch. Extensive renovations and upgrades to the property were carried-out to fashion it into a state- of-the-art, fully accessible facility. Since his death in 2004, Double H has become a testament to Mr. Wood’s vision. In fact, an H-shaped tree on the property is a lasting reminder of his commitment to the “health and happiness” of others. Mr. Newman continued to serve as Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Ranch until his passing in 2008. 07 Table of Contents

What better time to accept the position of board chairman of the Double H Ranch than during its 15 Years and 15,000 Smiles Celebration; it doesn’t get much better than that.

Our 15th year brought us many reasons for celebration - from a kick-off of our summer session with the opening of a new Discovery Building for our ever popular science and nature program, to a new look and further embracement from the Association of the Hole in the Wall Camps, to an updated mission, to the expansion of our winter program – there was a lot to celebrate in this 15th year.

While the inner strength and positiveness of life that emanates from the Double H children and their families continues to captivate me, I am equally drawn further and further into steering the Ranch towards all good things by the variety and quality of people who are stepping forward to join forces with us to make the best experience possible for the Double H children and families.

Leaving the day to day in the capable hands of staff and volunteers, the board and governing committees turned our focus to strategic planning, board development and raising awareness through various marketing strategies. And, of course, in this 15th year, financial sustainability remained at the center of our attention as we spent time insuring our portfolio performance is growing according to our established investment goals and strategies. We identified eight key strategic issues facing our organization and at the end of the year agreed our core strategies to address these issues are solid and will be continued into 2008. Recognizing the importance of the opportunities presented by charitable gift planning and the impact these types of gifts will have on our future, we formalized new opportunities and will market them in the New Year. The addition of a new Discovery building was well received by our campers this summer and the ski lodge expansion was completed by end of year for the 2008 winter season. With these two projects completed, we are finalizing a master site plan that will include a comprehensive prioritized list of infrastructure needs for the next three years.

I want to thank you, our donors, community partners and volunteers for making our 15th year a milestone year and giving us so many reasons to celebrate. I recognize that it will not be an easy task to surpass the successes of 2007, and I look forward to working with each and every one of you to keep the momentum going and spreading the magic.

2 Double H Ranch 2007 Annual Report A Message From Executive Director

Victor mentioned the many people who have joined forces with the Double H Ranch this year. The Partners Group, co-chaired by Charley’s daughter, Char- lene Wood Courtney, was formed as an extension of the Ranch, with a goal to raise funds through memberships and local events. The Group is targeting young area professionals and has been instrumental in introducing a whole new audience to our organization. We embrace a new look with the addition of a Hole in the Wall Camp tagline to our logo, reinforcing our membership in a strong, unified global organization and benefiting from their partnerships and fundraising efforts. And, in 2007 volunteerism was at the forefront, with over three hundred volunteers supporting the summer program, forty-three percent new and twenty percent medical volunteers, and the addition of forty new volunteer winter sports instructors and National Ski Patrol to the exist- ing family of more than one hundred and thirty winter volunteers.

Last but not least I am pleased to report that by the end of the year we reached $10 million towards our $15 million dollar goal for the Campaign for the Health and Happiness of Special Children, a campaign seeking gifts and pledges that, conservatively invested, will help to provide dollars to operate our growing organization each and every year.

We kicked off the summer season with the opening of our new Discovery program building, donated by Lincoln Logs. Discovery, a science-based education program offering hands-on learning opportunities, is a favorite amongst the Double H campers. The project is valued at $75,000 and the new building offers increased capacity as well as modern conveniences which the old building lacked.

125 of our older campers took advantage of the generosity of the Sacandaga Outdoor Center who donated all whitewater rafting trips for the 2007 summer season.

For the 2nd year the Parent Advisory Council, a group established to develop opportunities for parents and families to give back to those involved in the Ranch, as well as serve as an outlet of support for parents in similar situations, hosted a summer staff luncheon and donated time, money and food to recognize the efforts of all at the Ranch.

6 Double H Ranch 2007 Annual Report The 10th Year of Adaptive Winter Sports

Celebrating its 10th year, the Adaptive Winter Sports Program grew from every angle in the 2007 season. The number of students our group of 136 volunteer instructors and national Ski Patrol (13 new) served on the average per day increased from 10 students to 16 students, and the total number of lessons taught for the season increased 47% over last season. We added another Family Sleepover Weekend bringing us to five for the season, providing an opportunity for all family members to participate in our winter program, as well as come together as a family to share stories and experiences.

New Ski Lodge – In this 10th year, expansion plans were designed and funding secured to accommodate the increasing popularity and growing demands of this program with a new ski lodge facility readied for the 2008 winter season. The expansion will allow the program to double over the next 3-5 years and accommodate the program and medical needs of the growing number of students, families and volunteers.

22 Double H Ranch 2007 Annual Report 15 Years Ago... and Today n 4 campers attended first week/session one of summer residential camp>> This year we have nearly 900 summer residential campers. n Our operating budget was $575 thousand >> Our operating budget for 2007 is $3.2 million. n Our board consisted of 8 members >> Our board today consists of 25 members whose wide range of expertise contributes greatly to our success. n We had only a summer camp program >> Ten years ago we added the Adaptive Winter Ski Program > ...and today Spring and Fall weekends are fully booked with Family-Based Programs making us a year-round facility. n We had a couple hundred volunteers >> Today we have 1,500 volunteers year-round. n The diagnoses we served were cancer and serious blood disorders>> Today we also serve children with neuromuscular disorders and, in the winter program, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. n Our facility consisted of the footprint left by the Hidden Valley Dude Ranch >> Over the past 15 years we have expanded our facility to include the Bobcat, Muskrat and Wolf Cabins, Whitney Chapel, the Pole Barn, Indoor Riding Arena, expansion to the Body Shop and the Administration Building, the Nurse’s Lodge, Development and Facilities offices> ...and our addition this year of the new Discovery building donated and built this spring by Lincoln Logs Limited. n We had 4 horses >> Today we have 12 horses and Arthur, the beloved donkey who thinks he’s a horse.

In anticipation of Paul Newman’s first visit to the Double H Ranch in the summer of 1993, our campers painted a wall of the Arts & Crafts Building depicting their most memorable camp moments and included their handprints. The painting of the wall has become an annual tradition and the ‘00 history of the Double H Ranch is captured by the murals that now reside in the Theater and Entertainment Center.
