The research conducted using ethnomethodology reveals that the rural sector in Sri Lanka has undergone a convincing transition, while some traditional institutions were preserved. Within this transition, as the authoritative identity of the high caste people disturbed their education, in turn, prevented their upward mobility that of the low caste communities. Moreover, the market economy stimulated the upward mobility of low caste people in the contemporary Kandyan peasantries. As the market economy prevails in the country, some specific tasks performed by the low castes became market-oriented that and hastened the rise of rural elite from the low castes in Kandyan peasantries.

    JESHO_667_f1_442-458 9/8/05 10:38 AM Page 442 THE SINHALESE CONTRIBUTION TO ESTATE LABOUR IN CEYLON, 1881-1891 BY ROLAND WENZLHUEMER* Abstract It has become a firmly established belief among economic and labour historians that Sri Lanka’s plantation industry rested almost exclusively on imported Tamil labour during the 19th century. Although strong evidence countering this “dualistic” viewpoint has been produced since the late 1970s—especially by Éric Meyer—, the contribution of the local Sinhalese peasantry to estate wage labour remains underestimated or, indeed, largely ignored. This article strives to support Meyer’s point by bringing together old and new evidence illustrat- ing the at times substantial Sinhalese participation in plantation wage labour. C’est une croyance bien établie parmi les historiens économiques et du travail que l'industrie de la plantation du Sri Lanka reposait presque exclusivement sur le travail de la main-d’œu- vre tamoule pendant le 19e siècle. Various mountains with height range from 900 - 8000 feet such as Piduruthalagala the highest mountain in Sri Lanka and Kirigalpoththa, Thotupola Kanda, Kikiliyamana, Great Western, Haggala and the most sacred Sri Pada Mountain are situated in Nuwara Eliya District. Nuwara Eliya has become a paradise to the foreigners due to that the water falls such as Lakshapana, Devon, Aljin, St’clares, Ramboda, Bakers, Kurugu Ella, Garandi Ella and also the beginning of Mahawelli, Kelani rivers and Horton planes sanctuary and Haggala Botanical Garden which are famous for foreigners are found in Nuwara Eliya District. And the main reservoirs that contribute to Hydro Power in Siri Lanka such as Maussakelle, Carseltree, Kaniyon, Norton Bridge, Kothmale, Randenigala and large area of Victoria reservoir also situated in Nuwara Eliya District. Also the population in Nuwara Eliya about 57.1% are Tamils and rest are Sinhala and various other nationalities.
