Eight cases of mature male polar bears eating bear cubs have been reported this year among the animals around Churchill, according to scientists. Four cases were reported to Manitoba Conservation and four to Environment Canada. Some tourists on a tundra buggy tour of the Churchill wildlife management area on Nov. 20 were shaken and started crying after witnessing a male bear eating a cub, said John Gunter, general manager for Frontiers North Adventures, an area tour operator. "A big male polar bear separated a young cub from its mother and had its way with the cub," he said. "But the whole time, while that mother polar bear watched and witnessed, and actually after the big bears left, she still tried to take care of it. "It was difficult for our guests to witness and it was difficult for me to hear about and learn about. -

Nunavut is truly one of the most unique places on earth and our member s efforts to continue pioneering tourism in this territory have shown the positive impact tourism can have on families and communities throughout Nunavut. I have been with Nunavut Tourism for five years and one message that I have heard over and over again from members, tourists and the industry is the need for product development and market readiness standards. Using the 2015 Visitor Exit Survey as our stepping-off point we have come closer to understanding who the average tourist is in Nunavut, what they expect, what they need, and what we, as an industry, can improve upon. We have collaborated with the Department of Economic Development & Transportation – Tourism and Cultural Industries as well as CanNor and through this collaboration Nunavut Tourism has developed more impactful, accessible and valuable training materials in this past year than we ever have before. -
Nunavut's Education
Nunavut’s Education Act: Education, Legislation, and Change in the Arctic Heather E. McGregor Abstract: The 2008 Nunavut Education Act endeavours to call Nunavut’s public education system to account for linguistic, cultural, and local relevance to the majority Inuit population. Development of the Act involved lengthy scrutiny of existing and proposed education legislation to ensure consistency and compatibility with the new vision of education. Implementation of this Act is now necessitating system transformation on a substantial scale, on the part of educators, administrators, district education authorities, and territorial government officials. This article explores the historical roots of the 2008 Act. Renewal of the education system was made possible and necessary by the creation of Nunavut Territory in 1999, which grew out of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and negotiations for increased Inuit self-government. However, situating the Act in the history of Nunavut’s educational policy and decision making, it can be seen as a milestone in a longer change process aimed at creating schools that better reflect communities and the needs of northern students. Considering the inherent potential of education to reflect and sustain Inuit self-determination, linguistic protection, and cultural promotion, the intersection of education with politics through the Act was long in coming. Education is now seen to be one of the Nunavut government’s most important priorities. This is well worth recognizing in the history of education in Nunavut, and in Canada as well. The 2008 Nunavut Education Act (the Act) is the first provincial or territorial education legislation in Canada that represents the educational vision of an Indigenous population. -

ENGLISH 261 ARCTIC ENCOUNTERS 4-6:10, Gaige Hall 303 (days vary) Dr. Russell A. Potter http://eng261.blogspot.com There are few places left on earth where simply going there seems extraordinary – but a trip north of the Arctic Circle still seems to signify the experience of something astonishing. This course takes up the history of human exploration and interaction in the Arctic, from the early days of the nineteenth century to the present, with a focus on contact between European and American explorers and the Eskimo, or Inuit as they are more properly known today. We read first-hand accounts and view dramatic films and documentaries that recount these histories, both from the Western and the Inuit side of the story. Each week, we’ll have new readings both in our books and online, and a response to one of that week’s blog posts is due. There will also be a final paper of 4-6 pages on a topic of the student’s choosing related to our course subjects. This summer, we’ll also have an unusual opportunity: I’ll be teaching the second half of the course from on board a ship in the Arctic! As I have in past summers, I’ll be aboard the research vessel Akademik Ioffe as part of a team of experts working with passengers on a series of expedition cruises. I’ll be in the Canadian Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, and eventually in Nunavut heading up the coast of Baffin Island. I’ll be posting text, and some pictures (the limited bandwidth of the ship’s e-mail means that these will mostly be rather small ones) and posting/commenting on our class blog. -

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by David M. Cvet Summer is upon us with a vengeance, breaking temperature records from the 1930's – at least in Toronto. The warmer weather has had some fits and starts, with warm weather followed by frost, causing newly planted peppers and tomatoes to be damaged beyond saving. However, these exciting events pale in comparison to seeing the Queen's Beasts (some depicted on the right) who will be attending the Society's formal dinner at this year's Annual General Meeting, scheduled for October 1-3, 2010 in Ottawa. The Annual Meeting itself will be held at the Delta Ottawa Hotel on Queen Street. The Saturday evening dinner will take place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec), which will provide a grand setting for our annual banquet, graced as it will be with these impressive “guests”. We are indeed grateful to David Rumball for organizing this event, and for arranging with the museum to have the Queen's Beasts available for the dinner. I encourage our members to make the necessary calendar and travel to enhance the “coolness” factor of the Society in order to attract arrangements to attend this splendid event. new members – and to retain our present ones.
