Most of us, like the assembly line worker, have jobs that are too small for our spirit. ~ Nora Watson Hello, I’m Valerie Young the Founder of ChangingCourse.com, where I’m also the Dreamer-in- Residence. Just because you are an adult doesn’t mean you know any more about what you want to be “when you grow up,” than you knew when you were a kid. At least I didn’t! For most of my life, I kind of “fell into” things from college majors to jobs. It wasn’t until I was forty-years-old that I finally figured out what I wanted to “be.” Now I am living my dream doing exactly what I love and I’d like to show you how you can too. This book is divided into three parts: Part 1: Rethinking Work Part 2: Strategies for Discovering Your Ideal Work Part 3: From Dreaming to Doing Along the way, you’ll meet half a dozen ordinary people doing some pretty extraordinary things. People like: . Mother and homemaker Alison Talbert. Alison turned her love of traveling and shopping into a successful import-export business. Ex-Marine Tom Scheib who started an unlikely business raising, of all things, reindeer. Former Hollywood recruiter Sheila Brown. Sheila walked away from her Beverly Hills lifestyle to fulfill her dream of traveling the world. Jordanian-American Samira Hradsky who, after retiring from her job with the federal government, began offering in-home cooking classes in her new home in France. I decided long ago that it was important for readers to hear voices other than my own. That’s why you’re being treated here to guest articles from both career experts as well as real people who have changed course. People like former marketing manager Debbie Windoloski. Debbie shares the steps she took to finally realize her dream of becoming a professional gardener after, in her words, “a 25-year detour.” If you’ve been operating under the misguided assumption that you have to have a J-O-B to make money, then you’ll love meeting Barbara Winter. Barbara is the author of the book that helped www.ChangingCourse.com 2013 Page 4 Dr. Valerie Young It’s Never Too Late to Find Your Calling change my own life: Making a Living Without a Job: Winning Ways for Creating Work That You Love. Barbara has generously allowed me to share an excerpt from this game-changing book with you here. You’ll discover Barbara Winter’s winning formula for finding your calling by focusing on the essence of what it is you want. “When you know the essence of what you want,” says Barbara, “you realize it can come in many ways – opening your options and alternatives.” Speaking of options… If you’re the type who “wants it all,” you will be thrilled to read Barbara Sher explode another myth – namely, the myth that you need to find your one true calling and stick with that. Not only do you not have to limit yourself to one dream, but Barbara will show you how even if you have two dreams, three dreams, or even five dreams – you really can live them all! If you aren’t familiar with Barbara or her work, get ready to be wowed! I’ve been a fan of Barbara’s books for many years. My first introduction to this extraordinary career counselor and best-selling author was through her first book (and still my personal favorite), Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want. Since then I’ve devoured each of her other mind-expanding books including I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was and Refuse to Choose. Both Barbara’s offer to share their own unique spin on the process of self-discovery as well as some concrete exercises and other techniques to uncover those long-hidden passions. You’ll also hear from another guest contributor – a very creative guy named Patrick Combs. Patrick wrote Major in Success: Make College Easier, Fire Up Your Dreams, and Get a Very Cool Job. If you’re not a college student, don’t let the title throw you. This guy has come up with some of the most creative approaches I’ve seen for discovering your ideal work. And fortunately for you, he’s allowed me to share them with you here. If there is one “must do” exercise, its Patrick’s Super Simple, Unique & Weird Job Idea Jogger! Ok, enough about all the experts. The One Secret to Making This Book Work for You You’re reading this book because you want to find your calling. The operative word here is “find.” That means you are going to have to actively insert yourself into the process. “Obvious,” you say? Perhaps. But all too often people tell me they’ve read all the career change books out there but “nothing worked.” My response to this is always the same: “Did you do the exercises?” In 99.9% of the cases, the answer is a sheepish, “No.” It’s hardly surprising really. Our entire advertising-driven culture is based on the promise of instant gratification. And doing the exercises does take time. I’ve been as guilty as the next person of wanting a quick fix to complex issues. Truth be known, I’ve been as guilty as the next person of glossing over the exercises hoping the magic answer would somehow leap from the pages without ever having to fully immerse myself in the discovery process. When I finally realized this and started actually doing the exercises, a magic answer did appear – but it was the kind that can only come from within. www.ChangingCourse.com 2013 Page 5 Dr. Valerie Young It’s Never Too Late to Find Your Calling The decision, of course, is yours. But you’ve already invested your hard-earned money to purchase this book. That tells me that you really do want to find satisfying work. You’ve gotten this far – so why not turn off the TV a couple of nights a week, or use your lunch time, or get up 30 minutes earlier… and instead use the time to do the exercises here. When you consider that the reward could be nothing short of a lifetime of happiness, I think you’ll be glad you did. Does that mean you’ll find all the answers in a single, or for that matter, a series of exercises? Maybe yes and maybe no. After all, if you’re really serious about finding your passion, you must give the discovery process the time and attention it deserves. Take the example of a former ad agency account manager named Diana. Diana searched for some time before

  • The Gig Is Up: Who Does Gig Economy Actually Benefit?
Interdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems 19(1), 106-119, 2021 THE GIG IS UP: WHO DOES GIG ECONOMY ACTUALLY BENEFIT? Luka Bulian* University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture Zagreb, Croatia DOI: 10.7906/indecs.19.1.9 Received: 10 January 2021. Regular article Accepted: 30 March 2021. ABSTRACT This article takes on the task of exploring gig economy in its various forms and definitions, starting from its economic origins as a way to reduce transaction costs and overheads in firms making use of modern technology, and working up to some of its social consequences, such as the transforming of employees in just-in-time resources, fragmenting their labour and eroding their ability to organize and unionize in order to better defend their rights. Focussing on the influence platforms have on their users, be it in the role of workers or customers, it questions their far-reaching impacts on society and economy in terms of their positive, neutral or negative consequences for workers, as most of the literature agrees on the heavily skewed positive consequences for businesses. In order to make sense of existing research made on “giggers” this article tries to provide a scope of the gig economy using, which has been difficult to achieve as numerous researchers, institutions, and even states, define gig economy in different ways, with their data varying depending on definitions, dates, and methodological approaches. Finally, the article explores three distinct “selling points” of gig economy, namely: the possibility to generate (not always) steady income, the flexibility it offers to its users, and its consequences on workers’ social and emotional state, putting into question their benefits for workers, for the profit of platforms and businesses.

THE HUTH LIBRARY. LIFE AND WORKS OF ROBERT GREENE, M.A. VOL. VIII. GREENES NEUER TOO LATE. AND FRANCESCOS FORTUNES. 1590. What man does good, but he consumes thereby But thou wert loved for good, held high, given show ; Poor virtue loathed for good, obscured, held low : Do good, be pined, be deedless good, disgraced ; Unless we feed on men, we let them fast. Yet Hero with these thoughts her torch did spend : When bees make wax, Nature doth not intend It should be made a torch ; but we, that know The proper virtue of it, make it so. And when 'tis made, we light it : nor did Nature Propose one life to maids ; but each such creature Makes by her soul the best of her true state, Which without love is rude, disconsolate. And wants love's fire to make it mild and bright, Till when, maids are but torches wanting light. Thus 'gainst our grief, not cause of grief, we fight. The right of nought is gleaned, but to delight.
