Carl Alan Awards 2011 The Oscars of the World of Dance The Carl-Alan Awards were first introduced in 1953 by Eric Morley and were named after the joint Chairmen of Mecca Carl Heimann and Alan Fairley. The International Dance Teachers' Association was proud to present the 2011 Carl Alan Awards on Sunday 6th February, in conjunction with the IDTA President’s Dinner and Dance. The IDTA were pleased that all three sections of the awards were presented: Freestyle Theatre Ballroom, Latin & Sequence There are five categories of awards in each section. Performer's Award Teacher's Award Competitive Coach/Choreography Award Outstanding Services to Dance Award Lifetime Achievement Award All recognised dance associations or societies were invited to make nominations in all categories and each member body of the British Dance Council or Theatre Dance Council International was invited to send a delegate to represent them on each of the selection committees. The IDTA remained independent in the selection process. From the many nominations received, the selection committees were asked to short-list up to three nominees in each category. To be nominated for a Carl Alan Award by your peers reflects the nominee's considerable contribution to the world of dance. IDTA would like to congratulate all the nominees; unfortunately there can only be one winner in each category. The IDTA would like to thank Miss Angela Rippon for hosting the evening and presenting the Carl Alan Awards. ~~~o0o~~~ Performer's Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Performer's Award Lewis Baker Dannielle Gilmour Ashley Green Winner: ASHLEY GREEN Ashley has won many championship titles including, three United Kingdom, British, European and World championships. Ashley has performed in cabaret and after drama school he has toured the UK with "Theatre Lab" and has performed in 15 productions at the Royal Opera House. He choreographed "Churchill the Hollywood Years" and was the guest teacher/performer in channel 5’s "Seriously Dirty Dancing". Other film and TV credits include: "My Family", "Entrapment", "Vanity Fair" and the "Other Boleyn Girl" to name a few. Theatre Performer's Award Kade Ferraiolo Craig Smith & Natalie Woolf Louie Spence Winners: CRAIG SMITH & NATALIE WOOLF Craig and Natalie are the World Professional Exhibition Champions, United States Open Exhibition Cabaret Champions and British Open Exhibition Champions Craig and Natalie began performing together in 2006 and have gone on to perform for audiences around the world including the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Their exhibition dance work incorporates spectacular lift work through strength and agility with the aesthetic beauty and fluidity of classic dance. Craig began dancing at the age of 8 in South Africa and has won major national titles including the South African Latin Champion and Adult South African Freestyle Couples Champion. Natalie began dancing at the age of 5 and later attended the South African National School of the Arts where she added contemporary, modern, tap and advanced ballet to her repertoire of dance styles. Ballroom, Latin & Sequence Performer's Award Warren & Kristi Boyce Neil Jones & Ekaterina Sokolova Kyle Taylor & Liis End Winners: WARREN & KRISTI BOYCE Warren and Kristi are Great Britain’s leading couple in the professional ballroom field and are reigning champions in the UK Closed and British National championships. They enjoyed an extremely successful career as amateurs, winning the British National championship a record 6 years and one world title. As professionals they have broken into the major finals including the Asian Open, European and the British Open at the Blackpool Dance Festival. They are much in demand all over the world entertaining audiences with their fabulous shows. ~~~o0o~~~ Teacher's Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Teacher's Award Maria Howse Dawn Parker Carole Walker-Shaw Winner: CAROLE WALKER-SHAW Carole started dancing at the age of 11 and held many championship titles in Ballroom and Latin. Carole has been teaching for over 30 years and is very proud and privileged to have taught and trained many champions and teachers with the help and support of her family. To quote Carole “Dancing has given me a wonderful life and I hope that I have given some of this happiness back to others”. Theatre Teacher's Award Chris & Kathy Booth Janice Sutton Denise Winmill Winner: JANICE SUTTON Janice is a Fellow of the IDTA and principal for over 50 years of the Janice Sutton Theatre School, the oldest established dance school in Skegness and one of the most successful on the east coast. A talented and inspirational teacher, Janice has taught thousands of pupils many of whom have gone on to exceptional professional careers. She nutured former Royal Ballet principal, Deborah Bull and renowned theatre star Ramin Karimloo and well known choreographer Gary Lloyd. Numerous other pupils have continued their training at top London theatre colleges finding work in the West End, on cruise ships and in summer seasons and cabaret shows worldwide. Ballroom, Latin & Sequence Teacher's Award Mary Richardson Derrick Squires & Peggy Callaghan Jane Tumelty Winner: MARY RICHARDSON Mary has been a professional dance teacher since the age of 15 and has run a successful school in Reading training medallists, teachers and competitors at all levels. Mary was appointed an Examiner of the NATD at 26 and her work for her Association culminated in her becoming President of the NATD. Mary has promoted dance in education, teaching ballroom and Latin dancing in many of the schools in the Reading area. ~~~o0o~~~ Competitive Coach Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Competitive Coach Award Ashleigh Barr Colin Maxwell Donna Shepherd-Marshall Winner: DONNA SHEPHERD-MARSHALL Donna's Award was collected by IDTA Director, Anna Jones. Donna had a successful professional competitive Freestyle dance career before beginning to teach and opening her school in 1997. Over the years Donna’s pupils have enjoyed much success as teams, couples and soloists, winning top titles in major championships and festivals, including the Eurodance Championships in Brean and the Superteams at Blackpool. Donna has lectured in Europe and is a Midland Area Committee member for the ADFP. Theatre Choreographer Award Simon Green Richard Marcel Shani Mitchell Winner: SIMON GREEN Simon may be better known to you by his stage names, Nicky Andrews or Betty Legs Diamond. Simon has numerous West End Theatre, Regional Theatre and TV credits including “On your Toes”, “42nd Street”, “La Cage aux Folles” and numerous royal variety performances. Simon was the director / choreographer of Funny Girls, in Blackpool from 1994 - 2009. Ballroom, Latin & Sequence Competitive Coach Award Robert Grover Graham Oswick Paul Taylor Winner: ROBERT GROVER Robert's Award was collected by the Chairman of the ISTD, Peter Kyle, OBE Robert has coached and nurtured hundreds of couples at all levels and all ages to great success on the national and international scene. Many of these couples have gone on to win the Worlds, British, International and UK Open Ballroom Championships. At present Robert is very much involved in guiding and coaching the dancing lives of all the top flight dancers competing today in both the Professional and Amateur Ballroom sections. ~~~o0o~~~ Outstanding Services to Dance Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Outstanding Services to Dance Award Betty Bouston Colin Plummer Derek Povey Winner: DEREK POVEY Derek was a member of the original BDC/ADFP joint committee in 1989 and has been working over the last 12 months with Nigel Horrocks on two books for the newly formed BDC/ADFP joint committee. In 1996 Derek introduced Street Dance to the Freestyle scene and ran the first competitions. As President of “Streetdance International” which he founded in 1997, Derek has worked to bring the Street dance style to everyone. Derek has also written the Associate Street dance syllabus for the NATD. Theatre Outstanding Services to Dance Award Katrina Allan Gillian Lynne Betty Pattison Winner: BETTY PATTISON Miss Pattison's Award was presented posthumously by the Carl Alan Selection Committee and collected by her daughter and principal of Pattison College, Elizabeth McConnell. Betty was a Fellow and Theatre Branch Examiner of the IDTA and served on many IDTA committees including the Theatre Council and she was also a Fellow in the Ballroom and Latin Branches. Betty’s achievements are too long to list, her school Pattison College speaks for itself and was recognised as an Outstanding Independent School by Ofsted in 2008. She was awarded an Honorary MA for Services to Dance and Drama from Warwick University, the IDTA Distinguished Service Award and the Good Citizen Award by Coventry City Council. Ballroom, Latin & Sequence Outstanding Services to Dance Award Dereck Brown Geoffrey Hearn Carol Parry Winner: DERECK BROWN Dereck is a Fellow, Examiner and Director of the IDTA Dereck began dancing at a very early age in the Oldham area and was mentored by Nora & Albert Billington. After Army service Dereck moved to Peterborough and started teaching dance there in October 1952 and in 1970 opened "Brown's Dancentre" with his wife Edna. Dereck and Edna are still teaching supported by their daughter Joanne and head teacher Janina Mossman. Dereck’s other career, making films, began in 1937 when he bought a cine camera in Oldham market, this grew into VHS and DVDs and he still films all the major dance conferences. ~~~o0o~~~ Lifetime Achievement Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Lifetime Achievement Award Frances Dawson Anna Jones Anne Lingard Winner: ANNE LINGARD Anne began teaching Disco / Freestyle in the summer of 1978 following the success of Saturday Night Fever.
