For the past 20 years we have been fortunate to encourage many children to take a dance test with a difference. The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD) Disco Freestyle & Hip Hop exams are about ENCOURAGEMENT, CONFIDENCE and a sense of ACHIEVEMENT. It is something as teachers we believe in. We arrange with the ISTD in UK to send an examiner from London once a year to examine Island Dance Students. Why are they Different? • Our young ’Jr. Disco/Creative Dancers Join in pairs with their teacher to dance two of their favourite pieces and receive an official ISTD certificate, hand written marking & recommendation sheet and a trophy for their participation. • When children under 8 years of age begin to get nervous, their teacher can step in to encourage them. • For beginner students of any age, we set them a ‘One Dance’ challenge or Social Dance Test . • The older and more accomplished the children get, the more challenging the exam. Many students this year will be taking their Gold Star and prestigious Imperial Awards. • We do our best to pair each entrant with other students of the same level from their regular class. • Once attained, this qualification is recognized worldwide so even if you move onto to another country it is a credited measure of achievement for any new school. • All awards and certificates will be handed out at our Annual Show in June and special prizes will be presented to those who excel in their category. FOR THE HIP HOP EXAMS, ISTD AIMS TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING:- • Promote an appreciation and enJoyment of Street Dance and Commercial Hip Hop, with a view to developing technical and artistic qualities • Introduce an understanding of the various styles of Street Dance and Commercial Hip Hop dances, the different rhythmic expressions and characterizations • Motivate candidates and build self-confidence by providing carefully staged goals • Provide a structured approach for teachers to measure the progress of individual candidates Please call our office, or ask your teacher for advice if you are unsure of the level of dance test you should take. Applications should reach our office no later than Wednesday, 8th February 2017. .

  • Arthur Murray's Paper on History of Dances
The music begins - fingers snap, bodies become restless, and feet begin to itch. It is almost impossible to listen to music and not be stirred to rhythmic movements of one kind or another. We hum, we sing, we whistle, we sway, we clap, we strum, and ultimately we find ourselves dancing. All societies, from the most primitive to the most cultural, share a common need for dance. Many feel the urge, but do not know how to express it in an open forum. Learning to respond to basic rhythms opens up a delightful new world to everyone who has ever tried it. Social dancing today is one of the most popular pastimes in the world and is enjoyed in every country by people of all ages. It is stimulating, both mentally and physically – the care and frustrations of the work day world vanishing on the dance floor. Even more, the need to dance and express oneself, through dance, goes deeper than pure enjoyment. The need is so ingrained in the human race that history itself can be traced through the study of dance. The bases of popular dance are numerous. First, social dance helps to fulfill the need for identity with communal activities. Second, it is related to courting, in which the male displays his ability to move his partner in harmony with himself. In most social dances the male role is dominant; the female that of a follower. Third, popular dancing, especially before the 20th century, was often used to celebrate such events as weddings, the harvest, or merely the end of a working day.

Peggy married Jack Spencer in 1940, and had two children. They divorced in 1947. Peggy married Frank Spencer in the late 1960s after a long professional association. For many years, she and Frank (a musician and a dancer before the Second World War) ran the Royston Ballroom in Penge, South London. Peggy Spencer was a regular TV dance commentator. She was a leading coach for competitive Latin dancers, and was influential in both Ballroom and Latin American branches of the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing). Spencer choreographed a dance sequence for a Beatles video ('Your Mother Should Know'), and the tango for Rudolph Nureyev in the film 'Valentino' (1977). She appeared on the BBC children's show 'Blue Peter', bringing young dancers from her classes to demonstrate. In 1993 she was the subject of the TV show 'This Is Your Life'. All over the country, people dumped buckets of ice on their heads to raise awareness for the disease and simultaneously raised millions of dollars for research. There are so very many worthy causes out there, so many needs vying for all of our attention, and it’s a rare coup to stand out against the crowd as ALS did this year. At Pacific University, we have no such device. We hope that your own experience and memories of Pacific, coupled with stories of the people here today, will help you forge and strengthen connections with the university — and will inspire you to consider giving back to tomorrow’s students.
