All over the country, people dumped buckets of ice on their heads to raise awareness for the disease and simultaneously raised millions of dollars for research. There are so very many worthy causes out there, so many needs vying for all of our attention, and it’s a rare coup to stand out against the crowd as ALS did this year. At Pacific University, we have no such device. We hope that your own experience and memories of Pacific, coupled with stories of the people here today, will help you forge and strengthen connections with the university — and will inspire you to consider giving back to tomorrow’s students. This issue of Pacific magazine is our annual philanthropy edition. It celebrates the difference that you, as donors and friends, have made to the university. Financial support is, of course, of paramount importance. As many as 92 percent of today’s students — 99 percent of undergraduates — receive financial aid; the gifts you provide make a Pacific University education possible for countless students. These students are our pride and our joy. They go on to become doctors and artists, business leaders and community activists. They make our world better thanks to the education they receive and, hopefully, they in turn give back to a new generation.
