Professional and Amateur co-operation brings new rewards. 2009 saw the WDC and the WDC AL working together for the mutual benefit of each other. We witnessed how much can be achieved when there are harmonious relations and the desire for unity.

The WDC World Ranking Lists were fully implemented for both Professional and Amateur.. For the Professionals the Presidium have created a purse of 20,000 Euros, to be shared, 10,000 Euros each between Ballroom and Latin styles, between the top 12 couples in each style. The number of points earned by the couple during the year will be the criteria for the amount each dancer receives.

2009 was the year which saw the introduction of the Presidents Award . The inauguration of this innovative move was announced at the AGM in June. It is the intention of the President and the Presidium that this is the start of a tradition to continue through the many years ahead.

The first recipients of the Presidents Award were honoured at the AGM by a standing ovation. Warmest Congratulations to our 4 great 2008 World Champions who are now each a part of our dance history.

Factor.

Disneyland, Paris was the setting for the 2nd WDC Amateur League World Open Championships and also including the Professional Super Series Ranking events in the form of the Disney Cups. To say the event was a smash success would be an under statement.

The Programme included World Titles for every age group from Under 10 to Over 55. Each age group in addition to the World Championship also had a Disney Resort Championship so there was the opportunity to dance in more than just one competition.

Entries showed an increase over the previous year with well over 1500 couples coming from 43 countries. This is a remarkable fact when this was only the 2nd ever time the event has been run. Given the enormous pressures applied to dancers to „stay away“ it was a magnificent achivement. The WDC Amateur League supporters are growing in numbers as more and more couples seek the freedom to make their own choices. Even those couples who were eliminated in the first round can take comfort in the knowledge that they are a Champion in the struggle for a better dance world.

For the first day it was necessary to have two ballrooms in use to cope with the entries. There were specially laid dance floors the same size as the British Open floor and each couple could make the most of the opportunity, before Adjudicators of outstanding ability. Working in panels the list reads like a Whos Who of dance. An amazing fact is that between them the Adjudicators held 54 World Championship titles (Ballroom 32, Latin 22) and 39 British Open titles (Ballroom 21, Latin 18). Only the WDC could produce a panel with so much knowledge, experience and understanding. Mr Markus Hilton MBE was the Master of Ceremonies and Compere aand handled the event with efficiency and humour and kept everything running like clockwork.

Each of the three days saw a large audience who gave every couple maximum support in a fantastic and unique atmosphere. Many people commented how they were both amazed and impressed by the wonderful ambience, celebrating the joy and friendship of dance. It was almost like a huge family celebration and the WDC Amateur League family does now have much to celebrate.

The WDC Amateur League are building a tradition that the audience stand to applaud the last dance for the last event of the night. On the Saturday and Sunday nights this would be the two Professional events. Given the excitement and high standard of dancing it came as no surprise when the audience rose to cheer on the competitors in the final dance of the two Amateur Championships. Competitors from many countries left Paris with so many special memories and the determination to make every possible step to return in 2010.
