FIRST WORD January shropshire.qxp_Layout 1 16/12/2016 14:02 Page 1 First Word Stellar line-up announced for Shrewsbury’s folk festival Shrewsbury Folk Festival is this year celebrating its 20th anniver- sary with a stellar line-up of stars. Loudon Wainwright III, Eric Bibb (pictured), former Bellowhead frontman Jon Boden, The Unthanks, Oysterband, The Young'uns, Le Vent Du Nord and Seth Lakeman will be among the headliners performing at the popular event, which takes place at the town’s West Midlands Showground from Friday 25 to Monday 28 August. The festival also features four music stages, a dance tent, more than 100 workshops, dedicated children and youth programmes, a craft fair, real ale, wine and cocktail bars, and a food village. Commenting on this year’s event, Festival Director Alan Surtees said: “We’re very excited to have secured some great musicians for 2017 at this very early stage. Last year was a vintage year, but with an already strong line-up and our ongoing commitment to extremely high production values, we’re pretty sure that 2017 will top it. The feedback we had from last year was phenomenal from visitors and artists alike. The BBC 6 Music and Radio Two presenter Mark Radcliffe described it as ‘a little bit of heaven’, and that sums it up.” For more information, visit shrewsburyfolkfestival.co.uk New season of concerts Midlands dance company Midlands actress Julie from Lichfield Arts to premiere new work becomes ambassador for Birmingham air ambulance charity Repertory Theatre Birmingham-born actress Julie Walters has will host the world become an ambassador for the Midlands Air premiere of a Ambulance Charity, on the occasion of its brand new dance 25th anniversary. work in March. UNITED FRIENDS of the CHILDREN Preparing Foster Youth for a Future That Works ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14 JULY 2013 » JUNE 2014 QUALITY CONSISTENCY IMPACT GROWTH QUALITY CONSISTENCY IMPACT GROWTH So much has happened at UFC this year! In addition to providing our youth and alumni with quality services and support, we have been expanding our housing and education programs, serving an even greater number of foster youth and setting the foundation for future growth over the next several years. » College Readiness served a record 500 students with the generous support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Youth were engaged at a higher level this year with many more attending Saturday workshops and college tours which helped to create a college-bound culture in our students and caregivers. » College Sponsorship accepted its largest class of 50 students in the spring and served a total of 241 students at four-year colleges across the country. We shored up our support for students by offering on-campus “office hours” at local universities where we have a high concentration of students. » Pathways added 15 new permanent housing units for our Education and Pathways alumni so they can find stable housing after leaving our programs. We began redesigning the Pathways Alumni Program and prepared to add 35 new beds to Pathways in January 2015. As always, we need the support of our partners—people like you—to continue to grow our programs, keep the same quality and consistency we are known for, and work with our youth to create successful futures. Thank you for your commitment to UFC—we look forward to continuing our relationship and are excited about the future direction of UFC! Pathways Housing Program CHARLETTE Charlette had many obstacles to overcome when she joined Pathways in December of 2012—struggling to take care of her son and move 110 residents received forward with her goals.

  • An Investigation Into Audiences' Televisual Experience of Strictly
An investigation into audiences’ televisual experience of Strictly Come Dancing Karen Wood University of Manchester, UK Volume 7, Issue 2 (November 2010) Abstract This paper explores ten participants’ viewing experience of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC, 2009b) through personal, reflective diary writing. The main aim of the research was to investigate the concept of kinesthetic empathy and to see how this central concern in dance spectatorship might be theorised in relation to the active/passive debate in media audience research. Viewers’ motivation and commitment in how they watch Strictly will be explored to try and understand the range of viewing strategies adopted. From the research, areas that have been highlighted for particular attention are spectacle, emotional connection, admiration of skill and aspiration to dance. The conclusion will draw together discussion of moments of passivity, kinesthetic experience and active or passive engagement in relation to the concept of intuitive spectatorship. Keywords: Kinesthetic, empathy, active, passive, spectatorship, commitment, engagement The research presented in this paper is part of a wider project investigating kinesthetic empathy and screen dance audiences. The concept of kinesthetic empathy provides a framework to explore spectator responses to dance on screen, whether in terms of experimental dance film or popular dance on television. The aim of the research for this paper was to investigate the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of ten participants’ interaction with Strictly Come Dancing (including my own interaction as a self-confessed fan) and what motivates the viewing. The objective of this paper is to interweave debates in media audience research on Page 262 Volume 7, Issue 2 November 2010 active or passive spectatorship with those from dance scholarly discourse on kinesthesia with the ambition of reaching a refined understanding of spectatorship of dance on screen.
