Ports play an important role in China's economic development. Therefore, improving the competitiveness of coastal ports is an urgent problem facing the society at present. This paper selects 12 relevant indexes to establish a relatively comprehensive evaluation index system, and uses factor analysis and cluster analysis to evaluate and rank the competitiveness of China's 30 major coastal ports. 1. Introduction Port is the gathering point and hub of water and land transportation, the distribution center of import and export of industrial and agricultural products and foreign trade products, and the important node of logistics. With the continuous innovation of transportation mode and the rapid development of science and technology, ports play an increasingly important role in driving the economy, with increasingly rich functions and more important status and role. Meanwhile, the competition among ports is also increasingly fierce. In recent years, with the rapid development of China's economy and the promotion of "the Belt and Road Initiative", China's coastal ports have also been greatly developed. China has more than 18,000 kilometers of coastline, with superior natural conditions. With the introduction of the policy of reformation and opening, the human conditions are also excellent. -

At a Glance Advantages of High-speed Rail • Speedy: High-speed trains generally operate at a speed between 200 km/h to 350 km/h – well above the top speed of Hong Kong Airport Express Line trains. The fastest travelling time to Guangzhou will be about 48 minutes; Changsha around 3 hours; Xiamen around 4 hours; Shanghai around 8 hours; and Beijing around 9 hours. • Convenient: High-speed rail stations are generally located closer to city centres. Train services are more frequent, more punctual, and less susceptible to delays caused by bad weather. Passengers generally do not need to check in their baggage. • Environmentally friendly: High-speed rail is a green transport mode. Carbon emissions are only about 15% and 25% of those from aircraft and buses respectively. Co-location Arrangement • One-stop clearance procedures: Passengers can complete both Hong Kong and Mainland clearance procedures in one go at the West Kowloon Station (WKS), and then board trains to all cities on the national high-speed rail network. • Other examples exist: There are other overseas examples (such as the arrangement between the United Kingdom and France, or that between the United States and Canada). A co-location arrangement between Hong Kong and the Mainland has been operating smoothly at the Shenzhen Bay Port since 2007. • Mainland personnel in “Mainland Port Area” only: Mainland personnel will carry out duties only inside the “Mainland Port Area” and cannot enter other areas at the WKS to perform their duties. They cannot take any enforcement action in other parts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). -

Two species of Caridina that occur on this island were documented and discussed. One of these, Caridina tetrazona sp. nov. is described and illustrated as new to science. It can be easily distinguished from its congeners based on a combination of characters, which includes a short rostrum, the shape of the endopod of the male first pleopod, the segmental ratios of antennular peduncle and third maxilliped, the slender scaphocerite, and the absence of a median projection on the posterior margin. -

Canada ABSTRACT: The Pearl River in the south of China is the second largest river in China in terms of dis- charge volume. Two cruises were made to investigate the dynamics of nutrients and phytoplankton bio- mass in June and July 1998, across the Pearl River estuary to the adjacent territorial waters of Hong Kong. On-deck incubation experiments of 5 mixtures of freshwater from the surface with seawater from below the halocline were conducted to simulate time scales of phytoplankton blooms for each fresh- waterheawater mixture and to examine uptake of nutrients. In July, phytoplankton growth rates in- creased with salinity of the mixtures, with the lowest growth rate (0.81 d-') in freshwater and the highest (2.41 d-l) in 100% seawater (sahity = 29). PO4 was lower in freshwater (0.3 PM) than in seawater (1.2 pM),whereas concentrations of NO3+NH4 + urea (-80 FM) and SiO, (150 FM) were higher in fresh- water than those in seawater (25 pM for nitrogen and 26 pM for SO,). -

Total production value exceeded $79 billion in 2007, up 26 percent from $63 billion in 2006. Exports for 2007 were at $23 billion, a 30 at $18 billion. In the province of Guangdong, there are some 2,000 furniture factories. Begun in the 1990’s, Taiwan and Hong Kong furniture makers moved their plants and businesses here, and the province has assumed a leading role in furniture making ever since, known for highest capacity in producing, selling, moving and exporting furniture. It accounted for one-third of the country’s furniture production and almost half of the country’s total export volume. Of the $23 billion export value of the country in 2007, Guangdong furniture took up 44 percent at $9 billion. Guangdong is such an important market for U.S. woods that in 2009, United States exported $523 million worth of woods, mostly coming to South China. United States ranked as second largest sawn wood supplier to China according to China Forestry Research Institute data. The existing steel arch bridges in China and Japan were analyzed in terms of year of completion, main span length, structure type, main arch rib form and construction method. It is shown that the steel arch bridge in China has developed rapidly since 2000, characterized by a long main span, while in Japan it has stepped into a fast-growing period since 1955, with medium and small bridges holding a great majority. As for the main span length, most of the bridges have a span from 100m to 250m in China, while majority of bridges are shorter than 150m in Japan. Over 80% of the bridges in China are through and half-through bridge types, and the arch ribs are hingeless structures. -

For discussion on 28 October 2008 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PANEL ON DEVELOPMENT Development of Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point PURPOSE This paper briefs Members on the development of Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai boundary control point (LT/HYW BCP). BACKGROUND 2. On 27 May 2008, we briefed Members on the work of Hong Kong-Shenzhen (HK-SZ) Joint Task Force on Boundary District Development (港深邊界區發展聯合專責小組) (the JTF). Members were informed of the progress of two related planning studies on the proposed BCP at LT/HYW: the “SZ-HK Joint Preliminary Planning Study on Developing LT/HYW BCP” and the internal “Planning Study on LT/HYW BCP and Its Associated Connecting Roads in HK”. 3. Both studies were completed in June 2008. The HK Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) and the SZ Municipal People’s Government jointly announced the implementation of the new BCP after the second meeting of the JTF on 18 September 2008. Both sides will proceed with their detailed planning and design work with an aim to commence operation of the new BCP in 2018. A Working Group on Implementation of LT/HYW BCP (蓮塘/香園圍口岸工程實施工作小組) has been set up under the JTF to co-ordinate works of both sides. A LegCo brief summarizing the findings of the studies and scope of the new BCP development was issued on the announcement day (Appendix 1). 4. On the HK side, the development of LT/HYW BCP comprises the construction of a BCP with a footprint of about 18 hectares (including an integrated passenger clearance hall), a dual 2-lane trunk road of about 10 km in length, and improvement works to SZ River of about 4 km in length.
