Welsh Rugby Union claims top award

Welsh rugby triumphed at last night’s prestigious Rugby Expo Awards at Twickenham, taking home the top honours for the WRU’s marketing team.

Picture: Bangor U10, sponsored by the Principality Llangefni 10 v Caernarfon 32 Gareth Jenkins addresses North This was an exciting, interesting and quite intriguing North Wales Cup tussle for the first sixty minutes, until the Cofis finally drew clear. The Wales Rugby Council meeting teams were evenly matched from the start with youthful enthusiasm pro- viding entertaining rugby amid the occasional basic error. A good brisk opening eventually saw Llangefni edge nearer the Cofi line but a kick- able penalty went adrift whereas Caernarfon’s first promising attack saw wing Iolo Hughes back his own judgement by choosing a kick and chase option along the tramline prior to winning the race to gather and score. The lead was however short lived as the pack failed to deal with the re- start thus putting Llangefni back on the front foot. A well worked lineout take and peel saw lively prop Mathew Thomas hurtle towards the try line and with the aid of others was able to cross the whitewash. Carwyn Milburn added the conversion to edge Llangefni ahead.

A further Cefni score also looked on the cards when centre Greg Hors- man cut a swathe through the Cofi defence but he eventually ran out of support before being able to capitalise. The high tempo continued with the Cofis returning to Cefni territory and by securing quick ball were able to breach the home defence as a Cameron Davies charge and release found fellow centre Dafydd Roberts at hand to add another five pointer.

The Cefni scrum was functioning well and with Meilir Parry leading his charges by example by choosing good angles of running valuable yard- age was gained. Wales slip in world rankings after SA defeat Wales have slipped down the pecking order of the latest IRB World Rankings after their 15-24 defeat to South Africa at the on Saturday.

Warren Gatland’s men have dropped once place to seventh while Ireland are the big movers, leap-frogging both Wales and Samoa, who they beat at the Aviva Stadium 40-9.

Ireland went into their match with Samoa as the lower ranked of the two teams, but the convincing victory on Saturday means the Irish climb two places to sixth.

The margin of victory was enough to not only lift Ireland above Samoa but also Wales, albeit only by five hundredths of a rating point after the Welsh fell to a 24-15 defeat against South Africa at the Millennium Stadium.

This defeat means Wales have now gone 17 Tests without beating either the Springboks, Wallabies or All Blacks.

The win means South Africa narrow the deficit slightly to New Zealand above them with the All Blacks due to celebrate four years atop the IRB World Rankings on 16 November.

France’s 26-19 defeat by New Zealand has not proven too costly for Les Bleus, who maintain their spot but with a lower rating point total. The All Blacks are again unchallenged at top spot with a slightly improved rating.

Australia remain fourth after the 50-20 win over Italy but improve their total by half a point thanks to the try-fest in Turin. England and Argentina began the weekend third and 10th respectively in the world and are unchanged despite the home side’s 31-12 victory at Twickenham.

Scotland stay ninth after their 42-17 win over Japan, but with an im- proved points rating, and the vanquished Brave Blossoms rise one place to 14th as a result of Canada’s 19-15 loss to Georgia in Tbilisi.

The Under 15s and Under 13s welcomed their mid Wales counterparts to Caeau Les Phillips with both home sides earning comfortable victories. The 15s ran in 8 tries as they overcame COBRA 50 - 17 with the visitors battling gamely to score 3 tries in reply.

The 13s built on their first win of the season last week, with another impressive performance as they scored 7 tries whilst conceding only 2, as they recorded a 43-12. Dafydd Cernyw, Adam Berry, and Ifan Jones each got a brace of tries with Harley Lloyd Jones adding the seventh. Tom Jones secured 3 conversions with Ferdi Murray adding a fourth.

The younger teams travelled down to Meifod and enjoyed mixed fortunes. The Under 11s went down 26-12 against a much bigger home side.

The Under 10s fought out a rare scoreless draw with their COBRA hosts. Despite the absence of tries this was an entertaining game with some excellent tackling and defence work by both sides. Dinbych’s Steffan Floyd-Decke got the vote for tackle of the match after a try-saving effort.

The Under 9s also played out another hard fought game with the hosts COBRA narrowly edging out Dinbych by 3 tries to 2. Dinbych’s first try was scored by Dylan Davies after some fine passing work by the team and the second was an excellent solo effort by Efan Edwards. Luke Jones also impressed with his tackling.

The Under 8s continue to improve - they fought out a 7-7 draw in their first game before going down 7-4 in the second game. Morgan Jones, Sioned Endres and Seren Jones were amongst Dinbych’s try scorers.

On Sunday the Under 16s host Bro Ffestiniog at Caeau Les Phillips with other fixtures yet to be confirmed.

Eryri Cup Tie - Sunday 10th November 2013

Bay Under 14s Classic Cup Tie Win

Masterful first half tactical kicking and distribution by fly half Sam Earl Jones gained good positions in Llangefni territory from where the for- wards dominated possession to create opportunities for Owen Rees, Nye Michael and Huw Beardmore to score four tries to take Colwyn Bay to a 24-5 lead at half time.

Llangefni came back in the second half with some robust determined play and despite good tackling particularly from Alex Williams, Aaron Hoyle and Seb Marshall, Llangefni pulled back two further tries to make the last ten minutes a nail biting affair. The Bay cleverly played the game in Llangefni’s half from where Captain Nicholas Young led by example by driving the ball into the heart of the Llangefni defence and together with good breakdown skills from Sam Holt and Mathew Vaughan retained the ball for the Bay to drive over on two occasions only to be judged held up over the line.

The Bay can be pleased with this dogged win in this Cup Tie Classic and look forward to the semi final to be played in December.
