She is one of the best-selling artists ever in Japan with total sales of approximately 30,000,000 singles and albums. She has released eight original albums, three best-of compilations and 34 singles, as of March 2009. She initially debuted in 1992 as the lead singer of Super Monkeys, with fellow Okinawa Actors School classmates Max as back dancers. She initially debuted in 1992 as the lead singer of Super Monkeys, with fellow Okinawa Actors School classmates Max as back dancers. After the group disbanded, she eventually had her solo debut in 1995 on the Avex Trax label with the Tetsuya Komuro produced single ?Body Feels EXIT?, which was an instant hit. The following singles ?Chase the Chance?, ?Don't wanna cry? and ?You're my sunshine? all sold 1 million copies during a short period of time. In 1996, Namie released her debut solo album ?SWEET 19 BLUES? which sold 3.8 millions of copies throughout Japan and broke sales records at the time. It is the 12th most selling album of all time in Japan. At the end of 1996 she won the Grand Prix Award, the highest honor at the Japan Record Awards, for ?Don't wanna cry?. She is the youngest artist to have won the award. Then followed the release of the chart topping singles release ?SWEET 19 BLUES (single)?, ?a walk in the park?, ?How to be a girl? and ?CAN YOU CELEBRATE. The later became her best selling single and the 8th most selling single of all time in Japan. In 1997, Namie shocked everyone when she announced that SAM (from the band TRF) and she were getting married and that she was pregnant. Namie took a break from the entertainment business and her son, Haruto, was born on May 19, 1998. Her comeback started with the single ?I HAVE NEVER SEEN? on December 23. Her mother was murdered on the day (March 17th, 1999) her single ?RESPECT the POWER OF LOVE? was released, prompting one of her tattoos in her mother's memory. After a break following this personal tragedy, Namie began to work with producer Dallas Austin (also known for his work with American hip-hop/R&B trio TLC), giving her music a light R&B feel. In 2002, her divorce with SAM was announced and her music took a new direction, following her separation with long time producer Tetsuya Komuro in 2001. She performed under the name Suite Chic, collaborating with many of Japan's top Hip-Hop and R&B acts. With the SUITE CHIC project, Namie Amuro established herself as a credible R&B artist and adopted a much harder Hip-Hop/R&B sound on the first studio album she released in this new era of her career, ?STYLE? (2003). With the following album, ?Queen of Hip-Pop? (2005), she found the right balance between urban and pop sound. PLAY, released on June 27, 2007, became her highest-selling studio album since GENIUS 2000 and sold 540,000 copies. It featured tie-ins with the show Prison Break (?Top Secret?), the drama Himitsu no Hanazono (?Baby Don't Cry?) and Lipton Tea (?PINK KEY?, ?FUNKY TOWN?). Amuro finished the ?PLAY? tour, with an encore leg in February 2008 called ?PLAY MORE?. 2008 marked a new peak in Namie Amuro's career. In March, she released a new single, 60s70s80s, which became her 10th #1 single and first since I HAVE NEVER SEEN. She later collaborated with DOUBLE on a new song called ?Black Diamond?. The popular collaboration was featured on DOUBLE's Best Collaborations album which came out on May 28th, 2008. Namie released her third best of album ?Best Fiction? on July 30, 2008. It features her singles from 2002-2008 starting from ?Wishing On A Same Star? to her 60s 70s 80s single and features two new songs ?Do Me More? and ?Sexy Girl?. Sexy Girl? is used as the theme song the drama ?Otome no Punch? and ?Do Me More? is used in a second series of commercials for Vidal Sassoon. ?Best Fiction? went to #1 and has sold more than 1,4 million copies so far. Best Fiction had the highest first week album sales of 2008 and it is the second best selling album 2008. Best Fiction won the award for ?Best Album of the Year? at the 50th Japan Record Awards. Best Fiction spent six weeks at #1, it became the first album in 14 years to do this since Dreams Come True's album Magic. Namie will be starting a new arena tour called namie amuro BEST FICTION 2008-2009 tour. It runs from October 25, 2008 to May 31, 2009. This is her first tour ever that she does not have any of her earlier TK produced songs on the setlist. At the beginning of 2009, it was annouced that Namie will be in a third Vidal Sasson CM. It will feature a song from Namie entitled, ?Dr.? The theme is Bourgeois Gorgeousness. Her 34th solo single, ?WILD / Dr.? was also annouced which will be a double A-side and it will be released March 18th, 2009. ?Wild? will be feature in a Coca- Cola Zero CM with the theme of Coca Cola Zero WILD HEALTH. ?Wild / Dr. her 34th single under avex trax, became her 11th #1 single and second consecutive #1 since 2008's ?60s70s80s.? According to Oricon Style, Namie has broken the record of having all her singles debut in the Top 10 chart for the past 15 years, since 1995. Namie Amuro. Retired Japanese singer who was born on September 20th 1977 in Naha, Okinawa. Noted as "Queen of J-pop". As a child she attended Okinawa Actor's School, a talent school, that trained young individuals in singing and dancing. She debuted in a girl group, Super Monkey's (who later regrouped to form MAX (5), at the age of 14 in 1992. In 1995, she was picked up to be a solo artist under the wing of Japanese super producer, Tetsuya Komuro. She reigned as Japan's 'it' girl for the next few years until the announcement of her marriage and pregnancy in 1997. She took a year off and restarted her career in late 1998, unfortunately to declining popularity. In 2002, Namie Amuro transformed herself from tired popstar to R&B diva starting with Suite Chic project. The project brought renewed interest in her and since then her star has been on the rise again. She was the 1st Japanese female artist to top charts with million certified album in three different decades; her teen years, 20's and 30's. No other Japanese female artist has been able to do that so far. With her single "Just You and I" which was released in 2017, she became the only artist in Japan to have top 10 hits for the past 23 consecutive years. She celebrated her 25th anniversary of her music career in 2017, and announced that she will be retired from entertainment industry from September 16, 2018. Namie Amuro. Whichever way J-pop icon Namie Amuro went, Japanese music followed. She helped define the sound of the Heisei era, the 30-year period from 1989 to 2019, with energising singles that pushed techno-inspired dance pop and hip-hop into Japan’s mainstream consciousness. Amuro was born in Okinawa in 1977 and began her entertainment career as an adolescent. At first, she took part in a group called Super Monkey’s, but her undeniable singing and dancing skills quickly pushed her into the solo spotlight.

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

  • A Multi-Dimensional Study of the Emotion in Current Japanese Popular Music
Acoust. Sci. & Tech. 34, 3 (2013) #2013 The Acoustical Society of Japan PAPER A multi-dimensional study of the emotion in current Japanese popular music Ryo Yonedaà and Masashi Yamada Graduate School of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, 7–1 Ohgigaoka, Nonoich, 921–8501 Japan ( Received 22 March 2012, Accepted for publication 5 September 2012 ) Abstract: Musical psychologists illustrated musical emotion with various numbers of dimensions ranging from two to eight. Most of them concentrated on classical music. Only a few researchers studied emotion in popular music, but the number of pieces they used was very small. In the present study, perceptual experiments were conducted using large sets of popular pieces. In Experiment 1, ten listeners rated musical emotion for 50 J-POP pieces using 17 SD scales. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space was constructed by three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity.’’ In Experiment 2, three musicians and eight non-musicians rated musical emotion for 169 popular pieces. The set of pieces included not only J-POP tunes but also Enka and western popular tunes. The listeners also rated the suitability for several listening situations. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space for the 169 pieces was spanned by the three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity,’’ again. The results of multiple-regression analyses suggested that the listeners like to listen to a ‘‘beautiful’’ tune with their lovers and a ‘‘powerful’’ and ‘‘active’’ tune in a situation where people were around them. Keywords: Musical emotion, Popular music, J-POP, Semantic differential method, Factor analysis PACS number: 43.75.Cd [doi:10.1250/ast.34.166] ‘‘activity’’ [3].

Welcome to the autumn edition of Tales From The Woods magazine, a busy time for us all at this moment in time. At the end of this very month of October we shall be at London’s legendary 100 Club, and we all here at TFTW are in a state of excited anticipation in readiness for our return to this, the oldest music venue in London and possibly the UK, that has seen countless venues come and go, some lost to the passage of time since it first opened its doors in the heart of London’s west end amidst the carnage and destruction of World War II an incredible 75 years ago. The legend that is our wonderful headliner, Tommy Hunt, former member of doo- wop royalty in his native USA with The Flamingos, later to have huge hits and following as a bona fide soul man, a particular hero on the British northern soul circuit, is so looking forward to performing for us, on a show dedicated to that golden age of doo-wop back in the late fifties and early sixties.
