Angiocarpous Representatives of the Russulaceae in Tropical South East Asia
Persoonia 32, 2014: 13–24 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/003158514X679119 Tales of the unexpected: angiocarpous representatives of the Russulaceae in tropical South East Asia A. Verbeken1, D. Stubbe1,2, K. van de Putte1, U. Eberhardt³, J. Nuytinck1,4 Key words Abstract Six new sequestrate Lactarius species are described from tropical forests in South East Asia. Extensive macro- and microscopical descriptions and illustrations of the main anatomical features are provided. Similarities Arcangeliella with other sequestrate Russulales and their phylogenetic relationships are discussed. The placement of the species gasteroid fungi within Lactarius and its subgenera is confirmed by a molecular phylogeny based on ITS, LSU and rpb2 markers. hypogeous fungi A species key of the new taxa, including five other known angiocarpous species from South East Asia reported to Lactarius exude milk, is given. The diversity of angiocarpous fungi in tropical areas is considered underestimated and driving Martellia evolutionary forces towards gasteromycetization are probably more diverse than generally assumed. The discovery morphology of a large diversity of angiocarpous milkcaps on a rather local tropical scale was unexpected, and especially the phylogeny fact that in Sri Lanka more angiocarpous than agaricoid Lactarius species are known now. The Effect of Decayed Or Downed Wood on the Structure and Function of Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Communities at a High Elevation Forest
The effect of decayed or downed wood on the structure and function of ectomycorrhizal fungal communities at a high elevation forest by Jennifer Karen Marie Walker B.Sc., The University of Northern British Columbia, 2003 M.Sc., The University of Northern British Columbia, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The College of Graduate Studies (Biology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) March 2012 !Jennifer Karen Marie Walker, 2012 Abstract Shifts in ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal community composition occur after clearcut logging, resulting in the loss of forest-associated fungi and potential ecosystem function. Coarse woody debris (CWD) includes downed wood generated during logging; decayed downed wood is a remnant of the original forest, and important habitat for ECM fungi. Over the medium term, while logs remain hard, it is not known if they influence ECM fungal habitat. I tested for effects of downed wood on ECM fungal communities by examining ECM roots and fungal hyphae of 10-yr-old saplings in CWD retention and removal plots in a subalpine ecosystem. I then tested whether downed and decayed wood provided ECM fungal habitat by planting nonmycorrhizal spruce seedlings in decayed wood, downed wood, and mineral soil microsites in the clearcuts and adjacent forest plots, and harvested them 1 and 2 years later. I tested for differences in the community structure of ECM root tips (Sanger sequencing) among all plots and microsites, and of ECM fungal hyphae (pyrosequencing) in forest microsites. I assayed the activities of eight extracellular enzymes in order to compare community function related to nutrient acquisition. -

A Multi-Gene Phylogeny of <I> Lactifluus</I> (<I>Basidiomycota</I
Persoonia 38, 2017: 58–80 ISSN (Online) 1878-9080 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/003158517X693255 A multi-gene phylogeny of Lactifluus (Basidiomycota, Russulales) translated into a new infrageneric classification of the genus E. De Crop1, J. Nuytinck1,2, K. Van de Putte1, K. Wisitrassameewong1,3,4, J. Hackel 5, D. Stubbe 6, K.D. Hyde 3,4, M. Roy 5, R.E. Halling7, P.-A. Moreau 8, U. Eberhardt1,9, A. Verbeken1 Key words Abstract Infrageneric relations of the genetically diverse milkcap genus Lactifluus (Russulales, Basidiomycota) are poorly known. Currently used classification systems still largely reflect the traditional, mainly morphological, milkcaps characters used for infrageneric delimitations of milkcaps. Increased sampling, combined with small-scale molecular molecular evolution studies, show that this genus is underexplored and in need of revision. For this study, we assembled an extensive morphology dataset of the genus Lactifluus, comprising 80 % of all known species and 30 % of the type collections. To unravel taxonomy the infrageneric relationships within this genus, we combined a multi-gene molecular phylogeny, based on nuclear ITS, LSU, RPB2 and RPB1, with a morphological study, focussing on five important characteristics (fruit body type, presence of a secondary velum, colour reaction of the latex/context, pileipellis type and presence of true cystidia). Lactifluus comprises four supported subgenera, each containing several supported clades. With extensive sam- pling, ten new clades and at least 17 new species were discovered, which highlight the high diversity in this genus. The traditional infrageneric classification is only partly maintained and nomenclatural changes are proposed. -

L. theiogalus. - Taxonomy, systematics, new species, key. Abstract: An extensive study of the group of Lactarius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF revealed that within this complex a new species could be defined: Lucturiux oedohyphosus. This species can be distin- guished from both L. theiogalus and L. lacunarum by the structure of pileipellis and stipitipellis, and spore ornamentation. In the field it differs from L. theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF by the non-wrinkled, reddish brown pileus. and a poorly to slowly yellowing latex. An attempt is also made to clarify the nomenclatorical confusion surrounding the epitheton theiogalus. It is shown that Agaricus theiogalus in its original sense represents Lactarius chrysorrheus and cannot be used in the current concept of Lacta- rius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF. Lactarius tuhidus is accepted here as the correct name for Lactarius theiogalus sensu NEUHOFF and follows the current interpretation of this name by various contemporary authors. The fact that the original diagnosis could also be interpreted as describing Lactarius omphali- formis, L. obscurants and possibly also L oedohyphosus, is discussed. -
