Info Breakfast 2011-12-20

First, we had a successful LB seminar last Thu afternoon. Nice proceedings too. Thanks to Kenneth, Görel and others.

Then, we had an equally successful Jordanian X-mas party in the evening. So I want to thank Mohammad, Görel and others who made this possible.

TVRL was fortunate to have its candidate for next year’s Honorary Doctor at LTH accepted. The person that we, Magnus and I, nominated was Marcel Stive, Professor in and Scientific Director of Water Research Centre Delft, Delft University of Technology, The . Among many, many other things, he has been deeply involved in the IPCC reports regarding the impact of climate change on coastal environments. Very recently, the InterAcademy Council (an elite council established by more than 100 National Science Academies) invited him to lead a professional team to produce a UN targeted report on crucial water issues, which involves the commitment of National Science Foundations around the world.

Prof. Stive is our 7th Honorary Doctor. The previous ones were Professor Vujica Jevjevich, Colorado State University, USA, 1974 - Hydrologic Research Professor James Dooge, University of Dublin, Ireland, 1980 – Hydrology Dr. Asit Biswas, Canada, 1984 - Global Water issues Jan Ellesson, Lund, , 1995 - Rainfall Processes Dr. Nicholas C. Kraus, USA, 2001 - Coastal Morphology Prof. Malin Falkenmark, Stockholm, Sweden, 2005 - Enviromental Problems Related to Hydrology

New TVRL ‘Univertitetslektor’-position. Jan Höybye was here. As he was quite clear about not being interested in teaching, we came to an agreement with him that he should withdraw his application. But, we still want him to join our department. So, we will arrange an alternative position than the Universitetslektor. A position that will allow him to focus on the things he does best, international projects and networking. According to this plan, he will be here 2 days/week.

I got an email from the Swedish Environmental Court informing me that Peder Hjorth has been appointed Special Member of the court, meaning that he will be called to participate as a member of the court in cases covered by his specific competence. The scope of work of the court is so wide these days that the court has decided to appoint a number of these Special Members with different areas of competence.

Upcoming research calls. Crafoord is due Feb 10.

Cintia: She has sent in all the paper work for new on the Course on teaching for PhD students. No reaction from the ‘system’ yet, though.

We do not know the status on the Hedda Andersson scholarship for a visiting female professor. I will remind Kenneth to act.

A new SIDA sandwich PhD student Jaime Palalane from Mozambique is starting in mid January. Supervisor Magnus Larson. Also, from Mozambique, two master students will come, according to Rolf. As the have gotten their MSc degree, the idea is that they should continue as PhD students.

Also, a visitor is coming to the coastal group in mid January. Carlos Coelho is Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering Department of Aveiro University, in Portugal. He will stay 6 months.

TVRL got 3 MFS projects this fall: Sri Lanka (Magnus L), Egypt (Ronny), Ghana (Magnus P.).

The plans for the allocation of office space after the renovation of the V-building is almost definite. A plan over the 3rd floor is pinned on the board opposite of Cintia’s room. If you have some thoughts on this, please contact me.
