Brief History of Transpersonal Psychology Stanislav Grof Grof Transpersonal Training Mill Valley, CA, USA The International Transpersonal Association (ITA) was formed in 1978 for the purposes of promoting education and research in transpersonal subjects, as well as sponsoring global conferences for the international transpersonal community. The association was subsequently dissolved in 2004, but is now in the process of being reactivated and revitalized. Stone1,2 That religion can be a source of harm and trauma is something most clinicians know well, yet this fact is underreported in the literature. Indeed, most of the existing research indicates a positive link between religion and mental health. There is likewise little information on spirituality’s impact on mental health when it is used to bypass prob- lems, feelings, and needs. This article addresses this deficit by exploring the potentially harmful effects of religion and spirituality. It highlights the role of secure attachment and the combination of individual and group therapy to treat religious trauma and spiritual struggles. KEYWORDS: Religion; religious trauma; spirituality; spiritual bypassing. The psychological impact of religion has long been ignored by academic psychol- ogy (Belzen, 2000; Paloutzian & Park, 2005). Change is afoot, however, and the last several decades have seen a surge of research in this area, which generally shows a positive relationship between religion and mental health (Seybold & Hill, 2001). By contrast, there are relatively few references to religion’s negative impact and virtually no references to religious trauma. In fact, a search for articles on “religious trauma” yields studies on the use of religion to recover from trauma rather than religion as a source of trauma. Popular literature, conversely, contains many books on spiritual and religious abuse and manipulation, religious addiction, and toxic faith (Plante, 2004; Purcell, 2008; Winell, 1993; Wright, 2001). With their shared assumptions about transformation and growth, modern psychology and the therapeutic practice of counselling and psychotherapy are reviewed in terms of their utilisation of the hero-journey as a developmental metaphor for clients, particularly in trauma recovery. -

The Spectrum of Subjectal Forms: Towards an Integral Semiotics
Semiotica 2020; 235: 27–49 Sebastián Mariano Giorgi* The spectrum of subjectal forms: Towards an Integral Semiotics https://doi.org/10.1515/sem-2018-0022 Abstract: What is the relationship between consciousness and semiosis? This article attempts to provide some clues to answer this question. For doing it, we explore the application of the Integral model to semiotics; that is to say, the met- atheory that integrates the inside, the outside, the individual, and the collective dimension, on one hand and, on the other hand, the levels of development, states and types of consciousness. Our principal hypothesis is that the semiosis depends on the “subjectal” form where the self is located temporarily or permanently. To validate it, we analyze the way in which the universe of meaning changes between the self located below the subject (as a form), and the self located beyond of it. According to the Integral semiotics point of view outlined here, the relationship between consciousness and the meaning has to do with the reduction or expansion of the subjectal spectrum, and the trajectory of the self along of it. Keywords: integral theory, integral semiotics, consciousness, semiosis, subjectal forms 1 Introduction At present, there is a lot of development about perception (Petitot 2009; Darrault- Harris 2009; Dissanayake 2009). Unfortunately, we find almost nothing about the role of consciousness (and its structures and states) in semiosis – with the exception of Jean-François Bordron (2012). However, there is much research about consciousness and its relationship to the brain in the neurosciences (Berlucchi and Marzi 2019; Chennu et al. 2009; Demertzi and Whitfield-Gabrieli 2016; Murillo 2005). -

Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race, and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction. Duke UP, 2018. Bodyminds Reimagined is a compelling critical study of the points of contact and convergence between disability studies and Black feminist studies in contemporary Black women ’s spec- ulative fiction. In the first monograph focusing exclusively on the representation of disability by Black authors, Schalk meticulously sketches the contours of the various fields with which Bodyminds Reimagined converses. Schalk begins with the stance that “(dis)ability is rarely accounted for in black feminist theory ” and that disability studies “has often avoided issues of race ” (3 –4). Speculative fiction, Schalk argues, is a rich site to interrogate the contact between Black feminist theory and disability studies because the nonrealist genre elements allow authors to “reimagine the possibilities of bodyminds ” (17) and posit alternative constructions of identity in nonreal worlds that in turn “force readers to question the ideologies undergirding these categories ” (18). Bodyminds Reimagined considers Black women ’s speculative fiction published after 1970 using a three-pronged methodology: rejecting the good/bad binary that characterizes much scholarship on representations of disability; attending to more than just character analysis in close reading individual texts; and approaching speculative worlds on their own terms and reading them through their nonrealist rules. Bodyminds Reimagined is not only a vital examination of disability within Black fiction, but also a methodological manual of sorts for scholars inspired to continue this intellectual project. But what is a “bodymind ”? Schalk borrows this vocabulary from the materialist feminist disability scholarship by Margaret Price. -

The Grof/Halifax book and these ancient resources both show the imminent experience of death as a continuation of what had been the hidden aspect of the experience of life. —Joseph Campbell The authors have assisted persons dying of cancer in tran scending the anxiety and anger around their personal fate. Using psychedelics, they have guided the patients to death- rebirth experiences that resemble transformation rites practiced in a variety of cultures. Physician and medical anthropologist join here in recreating an old art—the art of dying. —June Singer The Human Encounter With Death is the latest of many re cent publications in the newly evolving field of thanatology. It is, however, a quite different kind of book—one that be longs in every library of anyone who seriously tries to un derstand the phenomenon we call death. -

Course Description: In the spirit of dialogue and inquiry, this advanced seminar provides an in-depth exploration of the field of comparative mysticism. After discussing the various meanings of the term “mysticism,” an overview of the field of comparative mysticism and its methodological foundations will be offered. We will discuss the major horizons of the field, as well as the main families of interpretive models in the field: typological, perennialist, constructivist, feminist, neo-perennialist, evolutionary, contextualist, postmodern, pluralist, and participatory. Topical sessions will address five contemporary areas of inquiry in the study of mysticism: (1) the intermonastic dialogue, (2) mysticism and gender, (3) embodiment and erotic mysticism, (4) the ethics of mysticism, and (5) psychedelic research and mystical experience. Students select two mystical traditions, authors, notions or phenomena and compare them applying one of the models studied or their own comparative approach. Students are encouraged to approach the study of mystics and mystical texts from an empathic, participatory, and contemplative perspective. Summary of Educational Purpose: The main purpose of this course is to deepen students’ knowledge of classic and contemporary approaches to the study of mystical phenomena and comparative mysticism. An additional objective is to guide students in the selection of the most appropriate comparative approach for their research interests. The organisa- tions represented in this study consist of the Union of Freethinkers, Finland’s Humanist Association, Finnish Sceptical Society, Prometheus Camps Support Federation and Capitol Area Atheists. 77 non-randomly selected individuals participated in the study, where their worldviews were analysed with Faith Q-sort, a Q-methodological application designed to assess subjectivity in the worldview domain. FQS was augmented with interviews to gain additional information about the emerging worldview prototypes.
