Created by the Hospital Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington Prayers of the HOLY FACE CHAPLET The Holy Face Chaplet is composed of a cross and 39 beads. The Cross calls to mind the mystery of our Redemption. The 33 small beads represent the 33 years of the mortal life of our Lord. The first 30 small beads recall to mind the 30 years of ’ private life. They are divided into 5 groups of 6 with the intention of honoring the 5 senses (touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste) of Jesus, which have their seat principally in His Holy Face. The last group of 3 beads recall the public life of the Savior and honor the wounds of His adorable Face. The Gloria is repeated 7 times within the chaplet in honor of the 7 last words of Jesus on the Cross, and the 7 sorrows of the Immaculate . The Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1 - On the O God, come to my assistance – O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Many artists have tried to capture the , but there are two sources that are believed to show His true face. (1) The is a centuries-old linen cloth that bears the negative image (front & back) of a crucified man, and is believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus. (2) The original Divine Mercy Image was based on St. Faustina’s vision of Jesus in 1931 and painted by Eugeniusz Kazimirowski in 1934. In 1996, an eminent photographer accidentally placed the image of the Shroud on top of the original Divine Mercy image and discovered an almost perfect match between the two faces, as seen in the composite above. Prayers (continued)

2 - On the Big Beads My Jesus, mercy. Glory be to the Father…. 3 – On the small beads (sets of 6) Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered, and let all that hate Thee flee from Thy Face. Repeat 2 & 3, meditating on one of Jesus’ sense for each set of 6 beads

➢ Meditate on Jesus’ sense of TOUCH Our sense of touch stimulates our emotions and reaches our heart. When you touch another person, you create a relationship with them. ➢ Meditate on Jesus’ sense of HEARING The world is full of sounds, and can affect our emotions and imaginations. When we listen attentively, we can hear God’s voice. ➢ Meditate on Jesus’ sense of SIGHT Everything we see can be an expression of God, in that the visible reveals to us the invisible, to the point of seeing Christ in others. ➢ Meditate on Jesus’ sense of SMELL A scent can often awaken deep emotions or recall a powerful memory, and can sometimes affect our other senses. ➢ Meditate on Jesus’ sense of TASTE The sense of taste goes beyond the experience of eating and drinking, and can relay good or bad feelings and memories.

4 - On the 3 small beads Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered, and let all that hate Thee flee from Thy Face. 5 - On the Crucifix or Holy Face medal God, our Protector, look on us, and cast Thine eyes upon the Face of Thy Christ. Seven Last Words of Christ

First word: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34

Second word: “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43

Third word: “Woman, behold, your son.” “Behold, your mother.” John 19:26-27 Seven Last Words of Christ Fourth word: Fifth word: “My God, my God, why have “I thirst.” John 19:28 you forsaken me?” Mark 15:34

Sixth word: Seventh word: “It is finished.” “Father, into your hands I John 19:30 commend my spirit.” Luke 23:46 The Holy Face Chaplet and devotion to the Holy Face began during the 1840’s when Our Lord appeared to Sister Marie of St. Peter, a holy Carmelite Nun in , . He spoke to her about spreading throughout the world the devotion to His Most Holy Face, as He was greatly sorrowed by and by the profanation of Sunday by our work and failure to go to Mass. According to Sister Marie, “Our Lord then made me visualize the act of blasphemy as a poisoned arrow continually wounding His divine heart. After that He revealed to me that He wanted to give me a ‘Golden Arrow’ which would have the power of wounding Him delightfully, which would also heal those other wounds inflicted by the malice of sinners. The following is the formula of the ‘Golden Arrow’ which is an Act of Praise that Our Lord Himself dictated to me, notwithstanding my unworthiness, for the reparation of blasphemy against His Holy Name.” Shortly after the death of Sr. Marie, a friend of hers () practiced and spread this devotion, ushering in 30 years of miracles attesting to the truth and power of this devotion. In 1885, Leo XIII established this devotion as an archconfraternity; and contrary to custom, immediately established it for the entire world. This was also a favorite devotion of St. Therese of Lisieux, and her whole family registered as members of the Archconfraternity of Reparation to the Holy Face at Tours, France. In fact, St. Therese was so devoted to the Holy Face that she added the title to her name at the time she took the habit: St. Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face. http://holyfacedevotion.com
