INTRODUCTION TO THE SERIES Although Sunday school is relatively a recent vocabulary in our Church, its existence is very old. The school of Alexandria is the most ancient of all the Christian seminaries. According to church history, the school of Alexandria was established by St. Mark to teach the new converts the faith before it became the famous theological institute. THE RITE OF BAPTISM IS THE MODEL From the rite of Baptism in the Coptic Church, we can identify three stages of “transformation” that must happen to the new converts before they are fully inaugurated as members of the body of Christ. The first is educational, where they get to know the Gospel and get “the Story” as told by the eyewitnesses, the story of Salvation as given to us in both the Old and the New Testament. St Luke writes: “In as much as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eye witnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophorus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.” The Gospel then is the right information, the good news. Whenever the Gospel is told, some would be moved to repentance to be “cut to the heart.” Some would be filled with joy and wonder and speak in tongues. Some would be filled with fear and trembling. Others would be mocking. No one who hears the Gospel can be indifferent. In this first stage, the Church anoints the “catechumens” with the sermon’s oil to guard the mind against all the work of the enemy. It is the work of the Holy Spirit in breaking down all high walls and fortified strongholds that keeps humans away from the light of the Gospel of Christ. The second stage is the stage of the movement of the heart, marked by the oil of Joy, “to be planted in the fruitful olive tree that is the Holy church of God.” The joy of Christ is what carries on with the Christians all their lives. No one can take that joy away from them. It is the joy of Knowing Christ and being in Him. The Joy that fills the heart more than oil and fat can satisfy the body. Our Lord becomes to -the believer in him- the food and the drink of the spirit in the 5 journey through the earthly life. Before the anointment with the oil of joy, the catechumen is asked to make the oath. The oath is renouncing Satan and accepting Christ. The baptized here is a spouse of Christ, pledging fidelity. It

Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. Crowds inside the monastery; photo: Mother Theoliptie photo: Weston Bland External festival Grounds; photo: Mother Theoliptie After enterinG the monastery complex, we were quickly directed to the primary church where prayers were taking place. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

  • The Fiction of the Life of Jonathan Fischer Chapters 8-10 PDF
The Fiction of the Life of Jonathan Fischer Chapters 8-10 PDF Chapter 8 – The Stellar Career of Jonathan Fischer Page 2 Chapter 9 – Poor or Rich? Dead or Alive? Page 9 Chapter 10 – The Trip to Jerusalem Page 34 Manual: This fiction was written for the reader to have a whale of a time. Please do not take every word seriously. "Einstein" and his friend and helper love it to pass on humorous, ambiguous and profound informations. The statement: "They proceeded at 4 a.m. or 4.14 a.m. to a 4 hour chat, to compose in the time span of 4 weeks 40 pieces of the DIN A4 formatted novel, to launch a party for 40 guests, at the 40th birthday of Jonathan Fisher, on the 14th of the 4th month", sounds more as a fairytale poem than a real incident. It is intended that the reader will ask himself over and over if the life of Jonathan Fisher really happened like that. The hero actually doesn't exist in reality, but the locations of the storyline are usually authentic. The names of the characters are deliberately chosen in a funny way. All through the constant interweaving and interchange of thoughts and experiences, which the fanciful novelists have collected, should come into being an interesting, exciting, funny, lively and instructive book. Have fun reading! The Swabian Cleverle. Recommendation for proper use and dosage: Walter Stein and his friend and helper of the fiction are quite comical types who were often misunderstood in their lives. They rightly got in trouble mixing truths and falsehoods with one another.

Analysing a very well-documented example from late Antiquity, Mamre (today Rāmat al-Khalīl) in Palestine (Hebron/al-Khalīl), this article discusses and refines the theoretical concept of “spiritual convergence” developed by Benjamin Z. Kedar. By applying differentiated anal- ysis criteria recommended by Dorothea Weltecke, it also examines the influence of eco- nomic interests, political power, concepts of purity, and aspects of time, as well as sym- bolic and narrative interpretations of the place, in order to explain why spiritual conver- gence took place at this location for at least five hundred years. The thesis is put forward that it is not only the peripheral location or lower symbolic importance that favoured the side-by-side cult at Mamre, as Ora Limor stated. Even more important for the successful sharing of that holy place was the limit of festivals to one per year and the narrative and symbolism linking the place of Mamre with the virtue of philoxeny and hospitality. This enabled the religious authorities to tolerate and perhaps even promote multireligious coexistence—especially as this was to the economic benefit of the region and thus ofall ethnic and religious groups.

The Sanctoral Calendar of Wilhelm Loehe's Martyrologium trans. with an introduction by Benjamin T. G. Mayes October 2001 Source: Wilhelm Loehe, Martyrologium. Zur Erklärung der herkömmlichen Kalendernamen. (Nürnberg: Verlag von Gottfr. Löhe, 1868). Introduction. Loehe's Martyrologium of 1868 was not his first attempt at a Lutheran sanctoral calendar. Already in 1859, he had his Haus-, Schul- und Kirchenbuch für Christen des lutherischen Bekenntnisses printed, in which he included a sanctoral calendar which was different in many ways from his later, corrected version. The earlier calendar contained many more names, normally at least two names per day. Major feasts were labelled with their Latin names. But the earlier calendar also had errors. Many dates were marked with a question mark. A comparison of the two calendars shows that in the earlier calendar, Loehe had mistaken Cyprian the Sorcerer (Sept. 26) with Cyprian of Carthage. On the old calendar's April 13th, Hermenegild was a princess. In the new one, he's a prince. In the earlier calendar, Hildegard the Abbess (Sept. 17) was dated in the 300's. In the new one, she is dated 1179. In fact, in the later calendar, I would suppose that half of the dates have been changed. Loehe was conscious of the limitations of his calendar. He realized especially how difficult the selection of names was. His calendar contains the names of many Bavarian saints. This is to be expected, considering the fact that his parish, Neuendettelsau, is located in Bavaria. Loehe gave other reasons for the selection of names in his Martyrologium: "The booklet follows the old calendar names.

Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. The theological understanding and leadership provided by the pastors, leaders, and members of KDEC encouraged significant change, including a new rapprochement between
