REVIEW: Def Leppard – Official 11 track live mp3 collection (2000-2001) We at LeBrain HQ have always loved being able to shed some light on music that is so rare, that you just can’t find out much of anything about online anymore. It seems one of most obscure categories of rare music are official downloads from long ago that were never physically released, and long since taken down. 15 years isn’t a long time ago, but did you know that in 2000-2001, Def Leppard gradually put up 11 live tracks to download from their official site? This was long before they had any sort of live album out whatsoever. These official live recordings were selected by the band, and were released over a period of several months. They were not available for long. They were taken down by the time Leppard changed their site over to promote the X album in 2002. Taken together, I assembled them in order of release into a a full length live album by Def Leppard — unofficial, yet official just the same! The first song released was the old acoustic standby “Two Steps Behind” (San Antonio, Texas, 2000). Joe begins by announcing that they were recording the show, and that this particular night was also the “official opening evening, at it were, of our brand new website, www dot defleppard dot com. And that’s the reason we’re recording it, because we’re gonna put it on the web. Worldwide, you guys are going worldwide!” That certainly explains things! The recording itself is quite excellent, rich and clear. You also know there are no overdubs, because chords are missed and the songs goes on. To me this is the ideal form of live recordings: official, but with a loose “who cares” attitude in regards to fixing mistakes later on. An older classic, “Women” (Salem, Oregon, 2000) has similar sonic qualities. It’s also quite bass heavy which is a nice change of pace for this band. There had already been a B-side live version of “Women” out there for a while, recorded in 1987 for the video In the Round – In Your Face . This version however has the currently lineup with Vivian Campbell, and a Joe Elliot who hits all the screams at the end. This would have to be my go-to live version when I want to hear one. The first then-new Def Leppard song to get the live release treatment was “Demolition Man” from Euphoria . This one, from Denver, Colorado in 1999, sounds faster than the album version. On an album of mostly so-so songs, “Demolition Man” at least had some velocity to it, unremarkable as it is. It’s over and out quickly enough. “When Love & Hate Collide” (Tokyo, 1999) is the second ballad released in the collection. Although you could get an acoustic version on the bonus disc ( Acoustic in Singapore ) to Slang in 1996, this was the first full-on electric live release. This version has some heft to it, and once again I would say this is the go-to version to listen to. Def Leppard have been playing The Sweet’s “Action” for so long now, that you may as well consider it a built-in part of their set. This was the first live version made available (London, 1999). Like “Demolition Man”, it seems faster and much heavier live. Joe’s voice is sounding pretty ragged at the end — as it should be after a performance like that! The hit song “Animal” from Hysteria was not readily available in live form, at least on an audio format. They did it unplugged for Acoustic in Singapore , and there were a couple VHS videos out there too, but nothing on vinyl or CD. This more recent version (Nashville, Tennessee, 2000) is as reliable as any other. It’s clear that even though the Euphoria album was shaky, the tour behind it was anything but. Def Leppard started putting the instrumental scorcher “Switch 625” live again on the Slang tour. It was welded onto “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” for a High ‘N’ Dry medley, just like it was on album. This Montreal recording from 1996 is incredible. Even the ballad has some serious crunch and scream to it. Would you like some feedback? Here you go, turn it way up. Campbell nails the solos on “Heartbreak”, but it is “Switch 625” that is the pièce de résistance. Just listen to Rick Allen, but don’t leave your jaw on the floor! At the end, Joe says “Ladies and gentlemen, the best drummer in the world, Mr. Rick Allen!” Then, a moment later you can hear Joe say, “He is,” to affirm the man’s awesomeness. These two were released as one solid 8 minute 12 second track. Then, from the same 1996 show in Montreal is another special track.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Singing Accent Americanisation in the Light of Frequency Effects: Lot Unrounding and Price Monophthongisation in Focus
Research in Language, 2018, vol. 16:2 DOI: 10.2478/rela-2018-0008 SINGING ACCENT AMERICANISATION IN THE LIGHT OF FREQUENCY EFFECTS: LOT UNROUNDING AND PRICE MONOPHTHONGISATION IN FOCUS MONIKA KONERT-PANEK University of Warsaw [email protected] Abstract The paper investigates – within the framework of usage-based phonology – the significance of lexical frequency effects in singing accent Americanisation. The accent of Joe Elliott of a British band, Def Leppard is analysed with regard to LOT unrounding and PRICE monophthongisation. Both auditory and acoustic methods are employed; PRAAT is used to provide acoustic verification of the auditory analysis whenever isolated vocal tracks are available. The statistical significance of the obtained results is verified by means of a chi- square test. In both analysed cases the percentage of frequent words undergoing the change is higher compared with infrequent ones and in the case of PRICE monphthongisation the result is statistically significant, which suggests that word frequency may affect singing style variation. Keywords: frequency effects, LOT unrounding, popular music, PRICE monophthong- gisation, singing accent, usage-based phonology 1. Introduction The phenomenon of style-shifting involved in pop singing in general and the Americanisation of British singing accent in particular have been investigated from various theoretical perspectives (Trudgill 1983, Simpson 1999, Beal 2009, Gibson and Bell 2012 among others). Depending on the theoretical standpoint, the notions of identity, reference style or default accent have been brought to light and assigned major explanatory power. Trudgill (1983) in his seminal paper on the sociolinguistics of British pop-song pronunciation interprets the emulation of the American accent as a symbolic tribute to the origins of popular music and provides the list of six characteristic features of this stylisation (1), two of which ((1c) and (1d)) are addressed in the present paper.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I, for one, found his take on fame and fortune refreshing. Could Phil Collen become your personal coach then? Harry Crisswell July 18, at pm Reply. I thought the guys were gonna hate it, but I showed it to them anyway — and they really liked it. Wow, these are beautiful! That's what happened to Rep. You can get away with a lot less, just by tweaking it here and there. I'm a huge Def Leppard fan. Leading with a foot-tapping bass beat, "Man Enough" has a jangly rhythm track that uses guitars sparingly. There is beauty in all of it. I lost 6 pounds in a week, and I wasn't actually trying to lose weight. They convey genuine strain and regret about a lost love, alongside a serene acoustic guitar. Sammy Helen! I knew that Collen started in a band named girl with Phil Lewis who went on the L. Def Leppard On Through the Night. Still, the band received a good amount of grief for releasing something so polished in a time when alternative bands were beginning to invade the airwaves. I also didn't appreciate that he blames this evil on religion, greed, blah blah blah, all while admitting his profession is part of the problem.

BUDDY HOLLY (Charles Hardin Holley) 7th September 1936 - 3rd February 1959 LYRICS Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on 7th September 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. At a young age he learned to play guitar, fiddle and piano. He released only three albums during his short lifetime, before his untimely death in an airplane crash that fateful “day the music died”, 3rd February 1959. However, he had been a prolific writer and a couple of albums consisting of unreleased material and demo recordings were issued posthumously. Buddy Holly was one of the inaugural inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, together with The Everly Brothers. The songs are as performed in principal recordings (or demos) by Buddy Holly alone and/or with The Crickets plus those released by other artistes where Buddy was involved. Additionally included, for diehard collectors of all things Holly, are songs where lyrics refer to Buddy Holly or his songs. The bracketed date following the title denotes the year of the initial recording. Where it was difficult to detect precisely what is being sung, queries/gaps or alternative suggestions are included in blue and/or indicated by ??. Details of backing musicians are shown both for the pre and posthumous releases. Reference to The Picks 1980s/90s additional overdubs is omitted. Some very obscure titles have been discovered; information is wanted - dates and any recordings. NB: the notes are from various, sometimes contradictory, sources. In many instances Norman Petty (25th May 1927 - 15th August 1984) is included as a co-composing credit.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Elephant States Jacob Shell
Elephant States Jacob Shell am a geographer by training; this means, so I persuade myself, I that I should pay close attention to those zones of the inhabited earth that do not show up on Google Maps. Among these zones are the tangles of elephant trails that wind their way through the Burmese teak forests, hidden from satellite view by cover of forest canopy and thick brush, shifting their position in yearly and seasonal cycles, too rough, narrow and quagmire-prone for motorized vehicles. If contemporary maps are to be believed, the trails stopped existing once modern car- tographers traded in their boots and mosquito nets for software manu- als and company subscriptions to the latest satellite imagery databases. Contemporary maps are not always to be believed. The elephant trails are still there. So are the trained elephants who trod these paths, car- rying on their big necks and backs their human riders, called oozies in Burmese, mahouts in English (a loanword from Hindi). These are Burma’s timber elephants, who to this day make up the center of the Burmese teak-logging industry, which produces some 80 percent of the world’s traded teak wood. The wood is purchased pri- marily by construction, furniture, and boat-building companies that prize its water-resistant resin. Teak grows best in forest soils unscarred by trucking roadways; elephants can go where roads cannot. The rela- tive comfort and ease with which trained work elephants can move across sodden, monsoon-soaked landscapes also makes them optimal transportation during floods: in one famous incident during World War II, elephant convoys from Assam, a state in northeastern India that bor- ders Burma, rescued hundreds of Indian, Burmese, and British refugees 127 128 Jacob Shell trapped at an upland river confluence near the Burma-India border.

  • My Confined Space My Work Station My Confined Space, My Workstation
my confined space My Work Station my confined space, my workstation 2 3 As part of the Prison Neighborhood Arts Project’s ongoing collaboration between artists incarcerated at Stateville prison, and artists on the outside, this written collection challenges our conceptions of neighborhoods and community. Contrary to the fantasy of expelling from our community people who have been convicted of crimes, the authors represented here resist isolation through collab- oration. This is happening. It’s part of your neighborhood. This collection came out of a 2013-2014 poetry course co-taught by staff mem- bers at the Poetry Foundation. Each student in the class was welcome to submit, and the enclosed choices were the most striking to the editors, or seemed to be in dialogue with one another. The editors also took the liberty to group and order poems not necessarily by their author, but—loosely—by themes that reoccur: the power of poetry, memory of adolescence, realities of incarcerated life, and politi- cal protest are some of those themes. These poets deftly utilize a variety of forms and don’t balk at the most difficult philosophical questions.
