That audacious gambit sweetened a sound forged in the UK’s industrial heartlands and proved that power and pop were not mutually exclusive, paving the way for bands like Bon Jovi. Def Leppard formed in 1977 and soon settled on a core lineup of singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, and drummer Rick Allen—just 15 when he joined. Guitarist Phil Collen would replace founding member Pete Willis after two albums and Vivian Campbell would step in to round out the group’s twin-axe attack after Steve Clark’s untimely death in 1991. Def Leppard made noise with its raucous 1980 debut, On Through the Night, but 1981’s High ‘N’ Dry proved that the band could write not just riffs but also hooks. The five members leaned into that strategy for 1983’s Pyromania, using producer Mutt Lange’s multi-track wizardry—gated drums, a hint of synth, and soaring vocal harmonies—to temper the guitars’ bite and Elliott’s shredded yell. It was 1987’s Lange-produced Hysteria, featuring sleekly melodic mega-hits “Animal” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” that confirmed Def Leppard’s status as the kings of pop-metal. In the early ’90s, as hard rock turned to grunge and grittier metal bands like Pantera, Def Leppard held onto their universal pop appeal, and it has served them well across decades of tours, studio albums, and live recordings. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

The accent of Joe Elliott of a British band, Def Leppard is analysed with regard to LOT unrounding and PRICE monophthongisation. Both auditory and acoustic methods are employed; PRAAT is used to provide acoustic verification of the auditory analysis whenever isolated vocal tracks are available. The statistical significance of the obtained results is verified by means of a chi- square test. In both analysed cases the percentage of frequent words undergoing the change is higher compared with infrequent ones and in the case of PRICE monphthongisation the result is statistically significant, which suggests that word frequency may affect singing style variation. Introduction The phenomenon of style-shifting involved in pop singing in general and the Americanisation of British singing accent in particular have been investigated from various theoretical perspectives (Trudgill 1983, Simpson 1999, Beal 2009, Gibson and Bell 2012 among others). Depending on the theoretical standpoint, the notions of identity, reference style or default accent have been brought to light and assigned major explanatory power. Trudgill (1983) in his seminal paper on the sociolinguistics of British pop-song pronunciation interprets the emulation of the American accent as a symbolic tribute to the origins of popular music and provides the list of six characteristic features of this stylisation (1), two of which ((1c) and (1d)) are addressed in the present paper.

Gulley School of Religion Southern Adventist University Near the beginning of a recent semester a student blurted out in my “Last Day Events” class, “I want to go to heaven via the resurrection!” Another stu- dent told me, “I don’t want to run to the mountains in the great time of trouble!” In an anonymous questionnaire taken by students in Last Day Events classes at Southern Adventist University the following data surfaced: 1. 49% worried about the present pre-advent judgment. 2. 56% were scared of last day events. 3. 41% would rather die than go through last day events. 4. 37% believed we gain entrance to heaven through Christ’s sacrifice plus our human works. 5. 50% were not sure if they would be saved if they died today. 6. 88% claimed they know Christ as a personal friend. This is a stunning revelation, when you realize these students represent a cross section of Seventh-day Adventist youth, from around the States and other countries, studying a variety of majors. JOEY TEMPEST ist in top Form und schmettert seine bekanntesten Songs in die Menge. Das Gedränge vor der Bühne wird größer und der Hype wächst mit jedem Song ihrer einstündigen Show. Leider fällt durch die Supporterstellung einiges unter den Tisch, aber Hits wie „Carrie", „Superstitius" und natürlich das abschließende "The Final Countdown" reißen wieder alles heraus.
