In an age of conflicts and confrontations, 100 years after the start of World War I we want to appeal for a culture of peace and to stand up for peace, disarmament, civil conflict resolution and non-violence as well as social and ecological justice. You are holding the Event Program in your hands. It is designed to give you an overview of all the activities with the relevant schedules, times and locations. On the central plan and in relevant lists you will find the practical information you need: The opening and closing events - let us once again invite you all to attend! The five Round Tables on the core issues - A Culture of Peace and Nonviolence - Gender, Women and Peace - Militarism and Alternatives - Peace and Social Justice - Reconciliation and Dealing with the Past Almost 200 workshops (many thanks to everyone who is contributing to this impressive collection of interesting topics!) A wide range of cultural activities (and here, too, our heartfelt gratitude!) The Youth Camp with its own events There is also additional information which you will hopefully find useful to make your stay in this beautiful old city even more enjoyable. We have tried our best to compile everything we could think of which you might benefit from. However, there is undoubtedly still something missing, and the error gremlins will have left their mark, so please excuse this! And for any problems or difficulties that arise - let us find solutions together in a spirit of respect, solidarity and tolerance. This large Peace Event has been organized from the grassroots with many hours of voluntary and selfless work – many, many thanks to everyone who has helped. We would be grateful for any tips about what is missing and what should be added. We will make every effort to ensure ongoing communication with you via social media, in the Peace Cafe, and with old-fashioned Info Points and notices. You will find this information via the app and the Twitter account (see further information below). Further information can also be found on the multilingual website: www.peaceeventsarajevo2014.eu Please use this Event Program as a guide to help you find your way around Sarajevo and the wide range of events. And please let us not forget that this city and this country have survived a merciless war, whose physical and psychological effects can still be felt today, and also a natural disaster, which destroyed large areas of the region. We, too, will try to make a small solidary contribution to help the victims. Our thanks go out to everyone who has actively helped so far.     Hunger & Fury: The Political in Bosnia and Herzegovina Jasmin Mujanović A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Re- quirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Political Science York University Toronto, ON May 2016 © Jasmin Mujanović, 2016 Abstract This text is an attempt to (re)approach the process of political and social transfor- mation in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) over the past century and a half through the prism of popular agency. The primary research question of this dissertation asks why given nearly uni- formly catastrophic social indicators across virtually all socio-economic categories there are so few instances of overt popular dissatisfaction (e.g. protests and/or energetic voter turnout) with the prevailing political order in BiH? In addressing this question through an analysis that straddles political theory, international relations, and political economy literatures I focus on the role played by the specific local variant(s) of the nation-state form in essentially depoliti- cizing the majority of the population in this polity. My central argument is that rather than creating the conditions for rational-legal public administration and multi-party competition, the state in BiH has historically served to deny political agency to would-be citizens. The state in BiH has actively sought to eliminate civil society, in other words, and that therefore the de- fining political and social crises in contemporary BiH must be understood in the context of nearly two centuries of this particular and peculiar state (and nation) formation process. I ar- gue that the historic evolution of the BiH polity has been characterized by a form of elastic authoritarianism; the process of seemingly persistent ideological mutation contrasted by static political and economic patterns.

By Andrija Mladenovic Submitted to Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Supervisors: Professor Balazs Trencsenyi Professor Nenad Dimitrijevic CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary June 2018 Abstract Twenty-five years after the emergence of the Other Serbia, this intellectual circle still remains an unexplored topic. It is often used as a mean for political disqualification, due to the fact that their ideas were never analyzed with structural and historical determinants taken into consideration. In order to do this, and provide an answer to the broad question, what Other Serbia is, this research used interpretivist approach with special emphasis on close-reading and historical method. The historical and structural determinants were subsumed into four ‘critical junctures’, Belgrade’s student rebellion in 1968, the 1974 Constitution, the 1986 Memorandum and the war as a direct trigger for the emergence of this intellectual circle. The main ideas identified are the anti-war platform (normative and analytical part), the struggle against collectivism and the struggle for modernization. They chose particular ideas, radically different in every sense from those embraced by the dominant nationalist intellectuals. This happened due to the public isolation they were subjected to, the context of war, and the fact that they represented intellectual counter-elite that sought to delegitimize the dominant intellectual elite, their position, as well as the factual foundation they were building it upon. The presidential elections ended on 5 January 2020 in the second round with Zoran Milanović as the winner with a relative majority of 52.66% of the vote. Milanović defeated the conservative incumbent Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who received 47.34% of the vote. This was a disappointment for her party, the Croatian Democratic Union (Hrvatska demokratska zajednica, HDZ), especially because of the upcoming intra-party and parliamentary elections. Milanović, a member of the main center-left political party in Croatia, the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (Socijaldemokratska partija Hrvatske, or SDP), and who had previously served as Prime Minister of Croatia (2011-2016), become the 5th president of Croatia.     Davor Dukić, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Croatian Language and Literature [email protected] The concentration camp of Goli Otok: More than or less than a cultural trauma?* The initial remarks This text is a work in progress and reports on the performed preliminary research whose purpose was to set up a working hypothesis and determine the scope of further research that will be continued in the next several years, probably after the termination of the SPECTRESS-project. The text is not historiographic even though the topic – the concentration camp for Stalin- supporters on the island of Goli Otok (1949–1956)1 – is an important part of modern Yugoslav history. Hence, the text is not meant to establish the historical facts about the island but to analyze narratives about it. The number of narrative sources is relatively small, but their canonic representability is quite well defined. The majority of analyzed historiographic texts, documentaries and movies are well-known works in their genre. Reliable answers to controversial questions about historical reality have a direct impact on the nature or the level of credibility of their interpretations because the number of utterances used to describe a historical event may be comprehensive, but is still limited. However, untangling of controversies and providing possible answers can only come from historiographers, which is beyond the scope of this text as it does not include examination of archival/primary sources. *** * This contribution was conceived as a large lecture for my colleagues in the SPECTRESS-project in Sao Paulo.
