Sound Evidence: An Archaeology of Audio Recording and Surveillance in Popular Film and Media by Dimitrios Pavlounis A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Screen Arts and Cultures) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Sheila C. Murphy, Chair Emeritus Professor Richard Abel Professor Lisa Ann Nakamura Associate Professor Aswin Punathambekar Professor Gerald Patrick Scannell © Dimitrios Pavlounis 2016 For My Parents ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS My introduction to media studies took place over ten years ago at McGill University where Ned Schantz, Derek Nystrom, and Alanna Thain taught me to see the world differently. Their passionate teaching drew me to the discipline, and their continued generosity and support made me want to pursue graduate studies. I am also grateful to Kavi Abraham, Asif Yusuf, Chris Martin, Mike Shortt, Karishma Lall, Amanda Tripp, Islay Campbell, and Lees Nickerson for all of the good times we had then and have had since. Thanks also to my cousins Tasi and Joe for keeping me fed and laughing in Montreal. At the University of Toronto, my entire M.A. cohort created a sense of community that I have tried to bring with me to Michigan. Learning to be a graduate student shouldn’t have been so much fun. I am especially thankful to Rob King, Nic Sammond, and Corinn Columpar for being exemplary scholars and teachers. Never have I learned so much in a year. To give everyone at the University of Michigan who contributed in a meaningful way to the production of this dissertation proper acknowledgment would mean to write another dissertation-length document.

As the film opens, we learn that Lombard’s character Irene is out on the town in Manhattan, on a high society scavenger hunt. INTRODUCTION The year 1929 remains indelibly imprinted in the minds of millions of Americans as the year of the great stock market crash. To most, American society would never again be the same. 1929 was also an important year in the history of popular culture in that the Academy Awards were presented for the first time; Station WGY in Schenectady, New York, was the first to broadcast a regular television schedule; the infamous but popular Amos N' Andy radio show made its national premiere; and American cinema began production of its first portrayal of a fictional woman attorney. A crash of another sort, the introduction of the motion picture industry's first big-screen "lady lawyers," irreversibly changed the face of the lawyer-courtroom film genre.

  • The Audience of Perry Mason, Or, the Case of What People Write to Famous Authors
. Volume 16, Issue 2 November 2019 The Audience of Perry Mason, or, the Case of What People Write to Famous Authors Janet Staiger, University of Texas at Austin, USA Abstract: This essay surveys what audience members of the US television series, Perry Mason (1957- 1966), wrote to Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of the character of Perry Mason, during the lifetime of the program. The study reaffirms and extends our knowledge of audiences (only some of whom might be considered ‘fans’) of primetime television. It focuses on approximately 130 letters and serves as a comparison with other studies of correspondence from TV viewers such as audiences of general news, the fans of Cagney & Lacy (1981-1988), and Internet exchanges between the creator of Babylon 5 (1994-1998) and its enthusiasts. The Perry Mason correspondence is less fraught with specific goals (altering perspectives on news programs, saving a cherished program, enjoying interactions with a famous writer) and, thus, likely displays more routine letter writing. Indeed, typically these audience members write that they like the program, they want Raymond Burr to continue on the program, and they question legal procedures, plot points, and choices of actors. However, among other points, they also tell Gardner their views on favorite (or not) recurring characters and trends in plot construction, and three spontaneously complain about ‘incidental’ (non-diegetic) music. Audiences seem to write creators of fiction television programs in order to maintain or alter the narrative formulas that give them pleasure. This practice appears to be a constant across historical periods of commercial US television. Keywords: audience letter-writing, television series, audience preferences, Perry Mason What do audiences do when something goes ‘wrong’ with their favorite characters or much loved serial narratives? One reaction is to discuss this with other audience members or friends who know the stories.

  • Kiss Me, Kate
‘A CHANCE FOR STAGE FOLKS TO SAY “HELLO”: ENTERTAINMENT AND THEATRICALITY IN KISS ME, KATE HANNAH MARIE ROBBINS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC This dissertation is submitted to the University of Sheffield for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2017 ABSTRACT As Cole Porter’s most commercially successful Broadway musical, Kiss Me, Kate (1948) has been widely acknowledged as one of several significant works written during ‘the Golden age’ period of American musical theatre history. Through an in-depth examination of the genesis and reception of this musical and discussion of the extant analytical perspectives on the text, this thesis argues that Kiss Me, Kate has remained popular as a result of its underlying celebration of theatricality and of entertainment. Whereas previous scholarship has suggested that Porter and his co-authors, Sam and Bella Spewack, attempted to emulate Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! (1943) by creating their own ‘integrated musical’, this thesis demonstrates how they commented on contemporary culture, on popular art forms, and the sanctity of Shakespeare and opera in deliberately mischievous ways. By mapping the influence of Porter and the Spewacks’ previous work and their deliberate focus on theatricality and diversion in the development of this work, it shows how Kiss Me, Kate forms part of a wider trend in Broadway musicals. As a result, this study calls for a new analytical framework that distinguishes musicals like Kiss Me, Kate from the persistent methodologies that consider works exclusively through the lens of high art aesthetics. By acknowledging Porter and the Spewacks’ reflexive celebration of and commentary on entertainment, it advocates a new position for musical theatre research that will encourage the study of other similar stage and screen texts that incorporate themes from, and react to, the popular cultural sphere to which they belong.
