Sheila has kept me laughing and grounded during this sometimes-exhausting process, and it is her emotional and intellectual labor that made this dissertation possible. Richard Abel’s intimidating scholarly achievements are surpassed only by his patience, generosity, and kindness. From my first day at Michigan, he has consistently gone out of his way to provide me with guidance and invaluable feedback. I continue to be inspired by his intellectual curiosity. The breadth and depth of Aswin Punathambekar’s knowledge never fails to amaze me, and he has pointed me in the direction of many unexpected sources. Perhaps most importantly, he has taught me to be a more generous scholar. Lisa Nakamura joined the University of Michigan after I was finished coursework, but I have nonetheless learned so much from her. My writing will always strive to achieve the clarity and purpose that Lisa finds in hers. One of the highlights of my time at Michigan was taking a small three-person seminar with Paddy Scannell. I look forward to many more game nights with her and her partner, Jeff. Nathan Koob’s boundless energy and optimism always boosted morale. He, perhaps more than any other, understood the value of community and worked hard to make everyone feel welcome. My cohort, Feroz Hassan, always provided a grounded perspective on life and academia when my neuroses started to get the best of me. I will miss our conversations over ice cream in sub-zero temperatures. Ben Strassfeld is setting aside a million- v dollar idea for a Hulk reboot in favor of media history, and academia is better for it. Katy Peplin’s passion for her research and her teaching is inspiring, as is her generosity. I am proud to leave the role of elder Canadian in the hands of Josh Morrison, and I can’t wait to see where his research takes him. Yuki Nakayama is the best happy-hour partner one could ask for, and her presence will be missed as she heads to Japan for research. I will always treasure watching reality TV chat with Kayti Lausch. Along with Katy, she has been instrumental in keeping me on track over the last few months. Richard Mwakasege-Minaya might be the most intimidating Street Fighter player I have ever met, but he also brings a necessary calming presence to the graduate community. Joseph DeLeon, Kaelie Thomson, Marissa Spada, and Vincent Longo make me confident that the department is in good hands. My family has been an unending source of support and encouragement, and joy. My brothers Vasilios and Robert have been terrific travel companions, songwriting partners, level designers, storytellers, and comedians. They are responsible for keeping me young. My parents, Brenda and Terry, are the most loving, most selfless, hardest working people I know. The extent to which they have supported me and trusted me is humbling. They never questioned any of my career choices and have only worked to help me achieve my goals, even if they were never quite certain of exactly what they were. As such, they form a rich case study on the interactions of “veillance” (mutual watching) involving citizens, journalists, intelli- gence agencies and corporations. While Surveillance Studies, Intelligence Studies and Journalism Studies have little to say on surveillance of citizens’ data by intelligence agencies (and complicit surveillant corporations), they offer insights into the role of citizens and the press in holding power, and specifically the political-intelligence elite, to account. Atten- tion to such public oversight mechanisms facilitates critical interrogation of issues of surveillant power, resistance and intelligence accountability. It directs attention to the veillant panoptic assemblage (an arrangement of profoundly une- qual mutual watching, where citizens’ watching of self and others is, through corporate channels of data flow, fed back into state surveillance of citizens). Finally, it enables evaluation of post-Snowden steps taken towards achieving an equiveillant panoptic assemblage (where, alongside state and corporate surveillance of citizens, the intelligence-power elite, to ensure its accountability, faces robust scrutiny and action from wider civil society).

April 27, 2016 GOLDEN AGE HEROES: THE AMERICAN MYTH OF WOODWARD AND BERNSTEIN Lauren Louise Sinclair Thesis Adviser: Professor Brian Hochman, Ph. D. ABSTRACT The Watergate scandal of the 1970s is one of the greatest presidential scandals in American history. In an elaborate scheme in quest for more power, President Richard Nixon and his administration performed unconstitutional acts of corruption while in the White House. These acts were brought to the public by the media and the investigative reporting done on the scandal. Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward are two of the most famous investigative journalists in American history due to their work on the scandal at The Washington Post. After the scandal had passed and Richard Nixon resigned from his presidency, Woodward and Bernstein wrote a book in 1974 telling of their experience reporting on Watergate titled All the President’s Men. This book was then made into an iconic film in 1976. The release of the book and film created a narrative of the two reporters as heroic journalists and propelled them into the public eye and popular culture. Woodward and Bernstein became poster children of investigative journalism, and my research aims to highlight the portrayal of the David and Goliath archetype applied to the journalists reporting the wrongdoings of the Nixon administration.

Apparently, it is not American citizenship because American authorities attempted to try him for treason and he became a stateless fugitive. After requesting political asylum in 21 countries, he was eventually granted temporary asylum in Russia. Neither states nor international organizations recognized his act as an act of citizenship. Did Snowden perform a citizenship that is yet to come? Did he perform an international citizenship? The issue of rights usually recognized in the literature on the debate about Snowden’s act concerns its content such as the practices of states spying on their citizens. This article focuses on the act itself as making digital rights claims that do not yet exist in law. We argue that just as Snowden’s act disrupted surveillance practices that evermore traverse national borders, it also called for digital rights and responsibilities that traverse national legal orders.
