SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 39

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME?

Given these strange times, I thought that I would dig deep into my games records and thereby fill some space in this edition of your Newsletter. With the current 39 clubs there is only one I have yet to visit and that’s because it has only been in use for a couple of months. There is also a further one where I’ve not seen a Wessex League game, but which one is that? My first ground currently in our membership that I visited was Downton, back in July 1985 for a pre-season game with AFC Bournemouth, Wick Lane was as I remember it a regular summer visit for the Cherries and although the Robins didn’t join us until 1993 I’m still going to count it as the first one. Subsequently I have visited the Nest just 55 times, with just some minor changes to the back drop, from Allotments to the Housing Estate along the side opposite the Stand being the biggest change. My first actual Wessex game didn’t come until 27 March 1990, for the visit of Romsey Town where the points were shared in a one all draw. I’ve managed to squeeze in over a 1,000 Wessex competition games since then and have been a visitor to Cuthbury over 150 times. Quite how many more visits remains to be seen as the new ground begins to take shape. My first call at Bashley Road was Christmas 1989, the visitors from Burnham seeing off the hosts 4-2 in a Southern League South Division clash, having added a couple of Wyvern ticks since then my first Wessex game was only in August 2016 when Newport IOW were beaten by the odd goal in five with 112 watching on. Kabba Jack with two and one from Shane Sheridan for the hosts that evening, with Darren Powell doing the honours for the Island side, but perhaps my most memorable game there was back in December 1994 when in an early kick off that was as I recall delayed due to traffic delays, Swansea City came to call in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie. Some 2,047 shoe-horned into the ground on that day, there was to be no shock although with the Swans going through albeit with a single goal victory. Moving west and our westernmost outpost, Portland United. I was at their old ground for their final game against Weymouth on 9 May 1994 against Weymouth. The Terras failed to read the script and beat their Dorset Combination opponents 4-1 with a crowd in the region of 450. Almost a year later I saw the Blues beat Gillingham Town 5-0 in a Dorset Combination game, my first Wessex tick came 17 years ago when they beat Andover 3-1. Goals from Andy Mason, James Reeve and Andy Turrell sealed the win- a certain Mark Carter was in the home line up that afternoon as well. With just the one visit in around 20 years it’ll soon be time for me to revisit Fleet Town. Going back to late February 1994 I was at Calthorpe Park to witness a goalless draw against Wimborne Town in a League Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg game, and whilst in the northern part of our sphere of influence move a bit west for Barlows Park. I had already “done” the old Tadley Town ground on the Green, adjacent to where the Memorial Hall is today., so Barlows Park beckoned on a bitterly cold evening in October 2010 for the visit of Bournemouth in a Senior Cup tie. The Poppies ran out as 14-1 winners that evening, with Kent Eriksen leading the way netting five goals. Jake Rowley contributed a hat trick with a brace from Craig Mansell and singles from Wayne Crutcher, Jon Blake, Fawzi Saadi and Tom Jeffes; the latter three still seeing Wessex action elsewhere. Another bitterly cold afternoon saw me drag myself along for a Wessex game against Christchurch, with the visitors winning by the best of three. This was on 5 November 2016 with Luke Stone and Andy Masson finding the net on the day. As I recall I had great difficulty in locating the car and getting on the road as the Car Park had been taken over by hundreds of o]people attending the Fireworks Display being held close by. Alton’s new Enclosure ground was first visited back in October 2016 for the visit of Pewsey Vale which the Brewers won 2-0 but recall many visits to the old Bass Alton ground with the quirky stand across the Anstey Road. Just one visit to Baffins since they became members and that was for the derby game against United Services over Christmas in 2016 that was won by the visitors 3-0 with over 150 coming through the gate. But to close where I began- the only ground where I’ve yet to witness a Wessex game is…... East Cowes Vics, seen several Island Games played at Beatrice Avenue though, so must check out that Red Funnel timetable soon.

DIDN’T THEY HAVE A LOVELY DAY PART THREE……

More random thoughts on, and hopefully memories of, matches in the FA Vase over the years that involved travelling to meet Clubs from other Leagues and looking now at our present Division One. ALTON 2017-18 Hengrove Athletic Lost 4-2 The second time Alton, as they are now, had entered the Competition and after defeating Amesbury 7-3 in the First Qualifying Round they travelled to meet Hengrove Athletic, then in the Western League Premier Division. Hengrove is an outer suburb of Bristol and they play in the Somerset village of Whitchurch, which also classes as a Bristol suburb. Goals from Danny Knee and Scott Sanderson left the scores level at two apiece after ninety minutes with Luke Crewe and an added on time equaliser from Joe Brimble for the hosts, before two further goals (from Craig Parsons and Jack Fillingham) in extra time took Hengrove through to the next round where they went down 6-2 at Newport (IOW). ANDOVER NEW STREET 2007-08 Holmer Green Lost 4-1 This is not a good Competition as far as New Street are concerned. In the year in question they defeated Clanfield (the Oxfordshire one rather than Hampshire) in the 1st Qualifying Round and that is their sole Vase victory to date. That victory saw them go to Holmer Green, near High Wycombe, in the next round with their opponents being long time members of the Spartan South Midlands League and at that time a Step higher in the Pyramid. Street found them too strong on the day with Holmer Green then losing 4-0 to Brockenhurst and subsequently being moved to the Hellenic League, where they are in the Premier Division. ANDOVER TOWN 2014-15 Bradford Town Lost 4-0 This was Town’s first season in the Premier Division and also their first year in the Vase whilst their opponents had been promoted to the Premier Division of the Western League at the start of the season. Andover had beaten another Western League side, Westbury United, in the 1st Qualifying Round but found Bradford a step too far. Bradford, based in Bradford on Avon, near Trowbridge, went on to reach the Fifth Round Proper and have ever since been a threat in the Vase as more than one of our Clubs can testify. BEMERTON HEATH H’QUINS 2010-11 St Blazey Won 2-1 After beating Lydney and Clanfield, Bemerton undertook a 325 miles round trip to deepest Cornwall and South West Peninsula Premier League St Blazey, with their opponents having already played five games, including a replay, to reach this stage of the Competition. Following this victory Bemerton went out to Spartan South Midland side Leverstock Green in the next Round, losing 4-1, but it was a good season for the Harlequins as they finished as runners up to Poole in the Premier Division. DOWNTON 2011-12 Barnstaple Town Lost 3-2 Another hefty journey, this time 125 miles each way as reward for Downton, newly promoted to the Premier Division, for beating Ringwood (9-1) and Fareham (3-0) to reach the Second Round Proper. Barum were then in the Western League – they are now struggling in the Southern League - and the narrow victory was another success for the Western League in meetings against our clubs, but that was avenged in the next round when they were defeated by Bournemouth. EAST COWES VICTORIA 2012-13 Melksham Town Lost 3-0 East Cowes are another club who have not enjoyed the best of fortunes in the FA Vase over the years with victories rather scarce and 2012-13 was one of the losses despite the club enjoying a good season in the League. In fairness Melksham were in the Western League Premier, one step higher, and with a long standing record of being difficult to beat at home. They lost at Horndean in the next round by the odd goal in seven but have since gained elevation to the Southern League together with a brand new Stadium. FAWLEY AFC 2018-19 Calne Town Won 5-4 More recent times and Western League opposition again as Fawley travelled to Wiltshire and Calne Town, then members of Division One. The game provided a feast of goals with Fawley winning by the odd goal in nine though the order of the goals is unknown. Elliot Earl, Harry Hawkins and Mark Lilley all scored once with Peter Southwick adding two after coming off the bench. A good performance by Fawley before going out to Hamworthy United in the next round. Saturday, 28 March 2020 Page 7 of 21

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 39

FOLLANDS SPORTS 2013-14 Highmoor & IBIS Won 4-2 A rare change of direction from heading West for this 1st Round Proper tie. Follands, who were to finish third in the Premier Division that season, had beaten Pewsey Vale and Melksham, scoring nine and conceding just two in the process and now headed to Reading to play Hellenic League Highmoor & Ibis at the multi-purpose Palmer Park which generated very little atmosphere for football. It was a comfortable win for Follands over a side that now goes under the name of Reading City. HYTHE & DIBDEN 2010-11 Croydon Lost 3-1 This was a first ever game in the Competition for Hythe and out of interest they have now played a total of 12 Vase games overall, 8 against fellow Wessex League sides. Croydon were then in the lower reaches of the Combined Counties League – they finished one from bottom whilst Hythe finished 14th in Division One – but won on the day before losing 7-3 to Beckenham in the next round. Croydon play in another soulless Arena, complete with running track, and have since moved to what was the old Kent League despite being in suburban . LAVERSTOCK & FORD 2009-10 Highworth Town Won 2-1 A 2nd Qualifying Round tie, Laverstock having beaten Lydney in the previous Round, and a relatively short trip to Highworth, just a few miles from Swindon. Highworth had been in the Hellenic League for the best part of thirty years and with Laverstock then in the Wessex Premier the sides were on an equal footing as shown by the scoreline and Laverstock overcame both the opponents and a pitch that descends very sharply from goalmouth to goalmouth. Back on home soil they went out to Brockenhurst in the next round.

More next time.

HAMPSHIRE DIF-ABILITY CHARTER

In this period of great difficulty and uncertainty it is probably appropriate to share the Hampshire FA Dif- Ability Charter, as a reminder of the commitment to improve the lives of so many people through positive actions and behaviours. In a time where the nation and indeed the world is suffering, this Charter and the message it conveys is brought into sharper focus, as it is more relevant than ever before to help those around us and those in need. In our respective fields, we are going to come up against incredible hardships, with tough challenges facing us all in the coming months as we strive to fight against this terrible illness and its repercussions. It is important, therefore, that we embody the image of positive change, positive action and empower those around us to do the same. Be positive, think positive- do positive. This is hopefully a direction that we will all continue take when the current crisis is over, however please take the time to read through the Charter, to the commitment you made and think- “How can I effect positive change and positive behaviours through my actions, both inside and outside of football?” Please feel free to share this Charter with others!

Recognising that whilst we may be different, Learning from each other. we all have the right to say, “I am a Footballer”. Empowering others to grow and flourish. Considering all people as equal. Opening pathways to extended opportunities. Planning accessible opportunities. Understanding our journey. Developing means of engagement. Reviewing achievements for the future. Providing inclusive sessions. Doing the right thing. Enjoying participation and one another.

If you have any "success stories" or examples of how you have actioned one or more of the points in the Charter, then please do feel free to send these across to Glenn, the Disability Football Development Officer at [email protected] to help develop the Hampshire FA Inclusive Opportunity Charter.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 39

SARACENS OVERCOME

A Programme for an FA Cup Tie has reached the top of the pile this week involving our former Club Blackfield and Langley and a trip to Cheltenham. It was a First Qualifying Round tie in 2015/16 against Cheltenham Saracens and is largely memorable for the wrong reasons. Cheltenham is a lovely Town and it was a pleasant drive down in the September sunshine. The ground, well in the confines of the Town, was easy to find on the side of a main road but the same could not be said for the entrance to same which involved negotiating a nearby housing estate. Cheltenham Saracens had finished bottom of the Hellenic Premier League the previous season, having been members since 1986, and had resigned from the League before a tie up or merger with a local Club saw them re-admitted to the West Division at the very start of the season. They had defeated Winterbourne United and Milton United – both one nil at home -whilst Blackfield had had accounted for Team Solent and Bemerton to reach this stage. I eventually found my way in to the ground around 2.15, bought a poor Programme (20 pages, 11 given to Adverts plus a lot of blanks) before joining the Blackfield Officials who were not impressed with the lack of any form of welcome or refreshments, and that set the tone for the afternoon. It was very warm and the game was not a classic and little sticks in the memory other than it was, I think, goalless at the break. Despite the weather there were no drinks for the players and when the Blackfield people politely asked as to any half time tea or refreshments they were told to “ join the b***** queue at the tea bar”. Ekow Elliott scored for Blackfield with twenty five minutes remaining but as the game reached and passed the ninety minute mark the scores were level until, to the delight of the visitors - who accounted for some twenty five per cent of the attendance of 43 - Ekow scored again five minutes in to stoppage time for a very enjoyable victory. As stated earlier an enjoyable afternoon, always nice to go somewhere different and Cheltenham is always a joy to visit (especially for cricket!). It does seem to be that the Club to all extents and purposes actually folded at the close of the previous season due to a lack of Committee. A request for help in the close season saw some people become involved from a lesser level of football, rather than an official tie up or merger, and in early September they had not as yet mastered the niceties of the game. The after match food for the Blackfield players consisted of a plate of about eight sandwiches left on the step outside the dressing room door. Blackfield went on to beat Southern League Wimborne by a staggering six one scoreline at the Cuthbury before losing by a single goal at home to Maidenhead in the Third Qualifying Round; and finished in third place in the League at the season’s end. Cheltenham Saracens have remained in the Hellenic League Division One West to this day and were runners up last season. You win some, you lose some.

Notes: Baffins Milton Rovers, entertaining Hedge End Rangers on a sunny afternoon, were trailing at the break, then levelled with less than twenty minutes to go and went on to score three times in the final eight minutes to take all the points from an entertaining encounter. Hedge End came close on a couple of occasions early on but it was Baffins who scored the opening goal when their skipper Mike Mallory rose high to head home at the far post from a corner. Gavin Cross, despite being under pressure by a home defender, managed to shoot into the far corner to level for Rangers. Dean Harris had three attempts to regain the lead for Baffins but his first shot hit the keeper, his second struck a defender and his third was blazed wide. Rangers went ahead right on the break when Bryn Schwodler played it across to Cross who finished extremely well which went into the near corner. Rangers did well to hold onto their lead in the early stages of the second half but Baffins eventually levelled the scores on 72 minutes when a Blu Boam free kick was headed goalwards by George Pharoah and the ball managed to squirm away from keeper Phil Kinally’s grasp and find its way into the net. Into the last ten minutes and a heavy challenge by Kinally on Chaz Gardner resulted in a penalty which Boam duly converted. Baffins’ stalwart keeper Tony Male made a smart save to deny David Goble but Baffins finished strongly with both Ryan White and Sam Willet scoring. Saturday, 28 March 2020 Page 11 of 21

Notes: This was rugby World Cup Final day (featuring ) and a noon kick-off as Wealdstone took on Bashley. At the time the Stones had embarked on what seemed to be a welcome ground share arrangement at Watford FC (which turned out to be an ill-fated one). Bash caught the Stones cold with a goal in the opening minute when Martin Stickler’s 20-yard effort beat the keeper’s attempt to save and went high into goal. Wealdstone levelled with a scrappy effort by Wilson with 19 minutes played. Close to the break, the visitors retook the lead when Jeremy Stagg’s low effort was met by a fine diving save from Wealdstone keeper Roach but Jason Lovell was first there to shoot home from close range. Bash keeper John Simpkins was the hero of the second half, as first the referee decided he’d brought down Wilson in the penalty box. The Bash keeper then made fine save to deny Goyette’s spot-kick, it was a firm shot but Simpkins got down to deflect it over the bar. Simpkins made a blinding save later in the game to keep his side in front. The referee caused a bit of upset as the home crowd thought Barry Blankley committed a bad foul in the first half which went unpunished and they never let him forget it. In fact, a large electronic scoreboard was in operation at the ground (a bit of a novelty at non-league level back then) and it initially gave Lovell’s goal to the referee, with a quick sign of “Oops” and then showing it correctly straight after! After that it was off to Woking for a second game of the day and, to finish where I’d started, I gather that England lost that rugby final.

COWES SPORTS (1) 2 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS (1) 2 (after extra time: 2-2 at 90 mins; Bemerton won 5-4 on penalties)

Bemerton Heath Harlequins: Toomer; Eves, Baker; Roberts, O’Keefe, Durdey; Young, Gallagher, Slade, Sanger, Williams (sub: Kelly 54). Sub (not used): Chalk

Notes: A nice sedate ride across the Solent for an evening game on the . It turned out to be a real cracker and one of the most memorable games in almost 5,500 matches seen, but not all for the right reasons! Strap yourselves in for this one! Division 1 Cowes faced Premier Division opposition from Wiltshire (and in 2nd place in the table). Bemmy drew first blood when Joe Sanger’s cross was headed home from close range by serial goal poacher Jack Slade. That goal came on 13 minutes but Cowes were level eight minutes later when Darren Williams’ cracking long range drive came down off the bar and Dominic Burbidge followed up to shoot home. There was no hint of what was to come in the first half but referee Mr McGrath showed four yellow cards in a nine minute spell early in the second period. The game ebbed and flowed until the Sanger and Slade combination paid dividends again, another assist for the former and an angled shot across the keeper and into the far corner for the latter. That goal came on 78 minutes and then there was another spell of card wielding, this time three of them red ones! Bemmy’s Kane O’Keefe was shown a second yellow for a mistimed tackle. Before play was restarted a Cowes substitution is made and an argument breaks out regarding when play should restart and Sanger is shown a second yellow for his comments. Before red card number three Cowes level the scores when a cross picks up a deflection in the middle and Burbidge nodded it home. Bemmy’s Jack Eves makes a comment to the ref and is shown a straight red card meaning it’s now 11 v 8 for the remaining minutes. What’s more Quins boss Ian Chalk, who was one of only two named subs, is sent from the dug outs. So, it was 2-2 at the end of the ninety minutes and the realisation of a much later trip back across the water than hoped. Chalk and the referee get involved in a further heated altercation before extra time starts. Bemmy line up 4-2-1 but Cowes, reluctant to use the width of the pitch in advanced areas, appear to swiftly run out of ideas. Cowes had chances though as Williams headed off the post from a free- kick and a turning Burbidge shot was equalled by a fine tip over from Quins keeper Fred Toomer. Into the final throes of extra time, it’s still 2-2 and Quins midfielder Michael Durdey, who was skating a rather fine line, committed a foul and he too was sent off – a second yellow card and the visitors then down to the bare minimum permitted (seven) with little time remaining. Still time though for a further blinding save from Toomer to deny a James Wykes shot from close range. Into penalties and Cowes found themselves in the strange position of withdrawing four players from the shoot-out, making it a case of ‘even-stevens’ now. Williams missed Cowes’ second kick and the visitors (through almost all their remaining players) score theirs, Daniel Young administering his side’s fifth and final kick to give me an evening when the ‘seven men’ triumphed in adversity. Having seen something most unusual that late trip home suddenly seemed far more inviting!

Trivia: I travelled back on the same Red Jet as Bemerton and when the vessel’s host was in close proximity to them, I could hear one of their party say to another: “Don’t wind her up too” … which was highly amusing to practically everyone travelling on that last Jet home!

Sub: Culver Notes: My very first visit to Hoe Road and it literally all happened for this end of season Hampshire League fixture – loads of goals (including a hat-trick and an own goal), a penalty not converted and a dismissal too. There was an early penalty for the Bishops when Sway defender Jackson pushed Kavin Hiscock from behind, but Pat Kelly’s 4th minute spot-kick was saved by Sway keeper Alan Wyatt. Sway took the lead on 16 minutes when Bishops keeper Michael Mead threw the ball out to Graham (Gunner) Enfield who wasn’t watching! The ball rebounded off him to Miles Glanville who buried his shot into the net. But the Bishops were soon level, with some great work by Hiscock, beating a defender and even evaded an attempt to foul him and he then crossed low for Kelly to make up for his ‘penalty miss’ to tap in. Things became more difficult for Bishops ten minutes before half-time when their defender Nick Clitheroe disputed a throw-in given against his side which then led to a Sway corner. Horndean official Mr Greenwood clearly didn’t appreciate the defender’s tone and this left Bishops to play the remainder of the game with ten men. It remained level at the break. Bishops converted four chances in the second half. A long ball was played through and Simon Crooks just managed to get a nick on it to divert it past the advancing Wyatt on 67 minutes. That was followed by a fine individual effort by Kelly who ran from half-way, skipped past a Sway defender and then waltzed past the approaching keeper and ran it into an empty net to make it 3-1 with 76 minutes played. Next came the own goal when Derek Dempsey’s in-swinging corner to the far post was headed towards the goal but Jackson diverted the ball away from Wyatt and into the net. The points were wrapped up as only eight minutes remained. There was still time for Kelly to bag his hat-trick goal when Hiscock crossed to Dave Middleton whose first-time shot was kicked off the line but only to the Bishops player who shot home via the luckless Jackson on the line. Extra Trivia: Did you spot that well known Wessex personality playing in this game. Yes, Derek Dempsey, it’s you! There is no hiding place! Hope to see you and everyone else that organise, manage, coach, participate, officiate and watch this beautiful game once again soon. In the meantime, my ramblings might be a poor substitute, but I hope they stoke some memories from the past. Do keep well everyone whilst we await the opportunity to attend a match once more – collectively I know we will be ready, whenever that might be. Saturday, 28 March 2020 Page 15 of 21

Blackfield got off to a great start when Nathan Oakley got through the inside-left channel, took the ball to Willoughby who stood up well, his shot rebounded off the keeper but he made no mistake from the rebound. Stockbridge were looking dangerous going forward and Craig Evans set up John Sibley who got his head to the ball just before Blackfield keeper Shane Wheeler to score from 15 yards. Blackfield were soon back in front when the alert Kevin Reacord nicked a back pass past the onrushing keeper and just managed to beat a chasing defender to nudge it home. But back came Stockbridge to bring the game’s fourth goal in the opening 23 minutes when Simon Poultney squeezed a shot in before a home defender and the ball floated over Wheeler and inside the far corner. Play settled from there and it remained 2-2 at the break. Blackfield edged back in front again ten minutes into the second half when Stuart Willes chased a through ball on the right and placed his shot low inside the near corner as Willoughby rushed out. Blackfield had some breathing space in the 64th minute when, from a free-kick, Tim Packer headed off the bar and it fell to Simon Eagle to nod the ball over the line to make it 4-2. The North Hants visitors were not perturbed however and pulled one back when their sub John Barnes found Colin Rainsbury to fire home, but Blackfield comfortably negotiated the final twelve minutes to win 4-3. Bournemouth: Yates; Terry, Howard; Mooney, Rowles, Russell; Jones, Faye, Bartlett, Howe, Glenister. Subs (not used): Young, McBride.

Notes: The Poppies arrived a little late which was strange because I travelled from Poole, leaving there at 6.30 and had little problem in arriving at Lymington on time. The game got off a few minutes later than the 7.30pm start.

There was a lively start to the game but it soon settled. The Poppies competed well in midfield with Darren Mooney prominent. Poppies Mark Jones was tripped in the box by Kevin Green and, following a delay to allow for treatment, Peter Howard took the penalty which was well saved by Wayne Shaw but the ball came back to the taker who scored. The Poppies held the lead going into the break.

Bournemouth increased their lead on the hour when Richard Glenister was put clear and lobbed the advancing keeper and into an empty net. That was swiftly followed by a third when Mooney and Shaw challenged for the ball following a cross, it fell to Mike Howe to score. The game went into the last couple of minutes with the Poppies still 3-0 to the good. But suddenly a good pass put Darren Pitter behind the visitors’ defence and he fired past the advancing keeper. Into the 90th minute and this time Dave Perrett raced onto another through pass to shoot home, the score going from 0-3 to 2-3 with almost a blink of an eye. But Mr Wooldridge’s final whistle soon followed to prevent a rousing finale as the visitors held on and take the points. Extra Trivia: The Poppies are one of only two clubs to have had continuous membership of the Wessex League since its formation in 1986. Brockenhurst are the other club. The Poppies are the only team to have played in the league’s top tier in every season since its inception.

Brading Town: Moore; Phelps, Quigley; Attrill, Fleming, Stuber; Jones, Sunsberg, Buckett, Greening, Henderson (sub: Reeve 71). Subs (not used): Miles, Barsdell, Armstrong, Collins, Ruck.

Notes: An ITV internet site had chosen this game to feature live and the FA Cup was present too!

Following some early threats from the home side it was the Romans that took the lead with 13 minutes played. A loose pass by a home player gave the ball straight to Dave Greening who took full advantage to score with a firm shot well into the corner. The game flowed well but it was Brading who added to their lead when another poor home pass conceded possession and it was played forward to Scott Jones who struck a fine turning shot from 25 yards into goal. Another gift goal came Brading’s way when home keeper Alford collected the ball and inexplicably threw it straight to Greening nearby who was left a simple finish. Wantage had the lion’s share of the second half and they got one back on 54 minutes when it appeared that Keen got the final touch from a scrambled effort. A trip by Ollie Fleming on Daley gave Wantage a further chance to pull a goal back but Day’s firm spot-kick thumped off the bar and went a long way back into play. Had a goal been scored then it might have caused an edgy final 13 minutes but Brading progressed.

Extra Trivia: The Brading goalkeeper was 18-year-old Simon Moore who is now with Premier League side Sheffield United.

Brockenhurst: Wilkins; Collier, Gregory; Bishop, Cullen, M Adams; Woolley, Kelly, Hayward, Collinge (sub: Collins 64), D Adams. Sub (not used): Manser Notes: Brockenhurst (from the Wessex League) defeated Isthmian League Premier Division side Basingstoke Town for the second time in the season (having beaten them 1-0 in the FA Cup) thanks to two goals right at the very end of the game. This encounter looked to be drifting towards extra time when, in the 89th minute, the deadlock was broken as Basingstoke keeper Dean Beale came out to collect a free kick from wide and dropped it. The ball fell to Paul Cullen who turned and chipped it into goal from 15 yards. A minute later it was 2-0 when a right-wing cross by Danny Adams could only be parried by Beale and it came invitingly to Marcus Woolley to shoot home from a central position and execute the final blow. In a game of few opportunities it was Brockenhurst who created most of them.

Trivia: Along with Bournemouth FC, Brockenhurst have played in every Wessex League season.

WEEK THIRTY-FIVE ROUND UP

Moving on from the pre-arranged Web-Ex meeting on Tuesday with the FA and our colleagues in other Step 5 and Step 6 leagues, the FA have confirmed that the season 2019/20 must end immediately. They have also stated that the season will be declared null and void, with NO promotion or relegation to or from Steps 3 to 7 effectively. Our clubs were made aware of the news late on Thursday afternoon. The consensus was there is no option of any football being played for the rest of this season due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Even if the FA were to extend, it wasn't going to be possible to complete remaining games, also subject to actually being allowed to socialise by May which is extremely unlikely given the trend we are seeing. We await more details as regards entry into the FA competitions next season, membership for our own League, clubs will need answers as regards finances coming in, through sponsorship for example and money from the League and going out in the shape of club fines and player contracts where applicable.
