Master 2 Recherche Etudes Anglophones Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A Fairy Tale between Tradition and Subversion A dissertation presented by Joséphine Magnard Year 2017-2018 Under the supervision of Mehdi Achouche, Senior Lecturer ABSTRACT The aim of this Master’s dissertation is to study to what extent Tim Burton plays with the codes of the fairy tale genre in his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964). To that purpose, the characteristics of the fairy tale genre will be treated with a specific focus on morality. The analysis of specific themes that are part and parcel of the genre such as childhood, family and home will show that Tim Burton’s take on the tale challenges the fairy tale codes, providing its viewers with a more Tim Burtonesque, subversive approach where things are not as definable as they might seem. -

Chryl Corbin Deconstructing the Oompa-Loompas Deconstructing Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory: Race, Labor, and the Changing Depictions of the Oompa-Loompas Chryl Corbin Mentor: Leigh Raiford, Ph.D. Department of African American Studies Abstract In his 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Roald Dahl de- picts the iconic Oompa-Loompas as A!ican Pygmy people. Yet, in 1971 Mel Stuart’s "lm Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory the Oompa- Loompas are portrayed as little people with orange skin and green hair. In Dahl’s 1973 revision of this text he depicts the Oompa-Loompas as white. Finally, in the "lm Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Tim Burton portrays the Oompa-Loompas as little brown skin people. #is research traces the changing depictions of the Oompa-Loompas throughout the written and "lm text of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory narra- tive while questioning the power dynamics between Willy Wonka and the Oompa-Loompas characters. #is study mo$es beyond a traditional "lm analysis by comparing and cross analyzing the narratives !om the "lms to the original written texts and places them within their political and his- torical context. What is revealed is that the political and historical context in which these texts were produced not only a%ects the narrative but also the visual depictions of the Oompa-Loompas. !e Berkeley McNair Research Journal 47 Chryl Corbin Deconstructing the Oompa-Loompas Introduction In 1964 British author, Roald Dahl, published the !rst Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book in which the Oompa-Loompas are depicted as black Pygmy people from Africa. -

Veiled in fog suspended above the river, trees on the distant bank teem with the shriek and swoop of cormorants and ospreys, provide backdrop for dive-fishing splash and wing-drizzle rise to nests. A lone heron stands in the muddy shallow. As the sky deepens to twilight, a soft breeze sails in from the ocean and tugs the fog upriver. Black brushstrokes obliterate the scene, blind the observer standing at the window. A sharp stab of loss bleeds into the dark room. -

I was born pure as the driven snow and as charming as the infant Prince Genji; with nary an impure thought in my head, my radiant smile spread the light of love across the hills and valleys of my hometown. I am doubtful whether that is still the case today. Each time that I look in a mirror I fly into a rage, asking, “Why have you become like this? Is this the sum of your current existence?” There are those who say that I am still young, and that people are things that may yet change. How ridiculous. It is said that the child is the father of the man. And with this year, another one will be added to my twenty, and the end of my splendid quarter-century youth will soon approach. -

FRANNY'S CANDIES “I roll the Kettledrum candy in my mouth.” Franny pictures herself chewing on Boston Fruit Slices and her jaw flexes automatically. “Chewy wedges taste lemon and lime and go BOOM-bah-BOOM when I bite into one.” She adds, “When I unwrap a second Kettledrum out of its tight parchment, I examine the sour and sugar-copper rind. They are better enjoyed in pairs. Tomás, why aren’t Kettledrum candies hard? Like Lifesavers or Butterscotches? When they clink against your teeth, they could sound like a snare or a top hat. I can hear a soft bass rumble a tympani symphony deep within me. I swear, the Kettledrums make my voice go baritone when I sing BOOM-bah-BOOM after eating one. It’s true: I’ve tried it!” Franny confesses this to me under her gummy-bear breath and I agree unconditionally the way a best friend must. We come here because most of her schoolmates do not make their way down the block to Doña Dolce. -
