When I needed her example of holy acceptance, it was there to remind me. For me, and I suspect for Francis, these small, personal rituals and “sacramentals” keep us in touch with those in our own circle of saints. We all have our models of mercy. Some of them may be among those living on Earth and some among those who are living in Eternity. Two of these persons are my parents. I knew that if in the case there were not, she would have moved to another row. Had I not already been startled into humility, her gesture of welcome to the newcomers would have quickly put me “in my place.” Then came the gospel and I realized that although it was no intention of my older friend in the back of the church and my Sister in the front, I had just been tempted. Considering that the U.S. imports 80- 90% of its seafood, most from parts of the world with very high incidences of human trafficking, the CCOAHT believes that Lent is an appropriate time to raise awareness of human trafficking in the seafood supply chains.
