Title: Proposal to Encode Heterodox Chess Symbols in the UCS Source: Garth Wallace Status: Individual Contribution Date: 2016-10-25 Introduction The UCS contains symbols for the game of chess in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. These are used in figurine notation, a common variation on algebraic notation in which pieces are represented in running text using the same symbols as are found in diagrams. While the symbols already encoded in Unicode are sufficient for use in the orthodox game, they are insufficient for many chess problems and variant games, which make use of extended sets. 1. Fairy chess problems The presentation of chess positions as puzzles to be solved predates the existence of the modern game, dating back to the mansūbāt composed for shatranj, the Muslim predecessor of chess. In modern chess problems, a position is provided along with a stipulation such as “white to move and mate in two”, and the solver is tasked with finding a move (called a “key”) that satisfies the stipulation regardless of a hypothetical opposing player’s moves in response. These solutions are given in the same notation as lines of play in over-the-board games: typically algebraic notation, using abbreviations for the names of pieces, or figurine algebraic notation. Problem composers have not limited themselves to the materials of the conventional game, but have experimented with different board sizes and geometries, altered rules, goals other than checkmate, and different pieces. Problems that diverge from the standard game comprise a genre called “fairy chess”. Thomas Rayner Dawson, known as the “father of fairy chess”, pop- ularized the genre in the early 20th century. -

Algorithmic Combinatorial Game Theory∗
Playing Games with Algorithms: Algorithmic Combinatorial Game Theory∗ Erik D. Demaine† Robert A. Hearn‡ Abstract Combinatorial games lead to several interesting, clean problems in algorithms and complexity theory, many of which remain open. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the area to encourage further research. In particular, we begin with general background in Combinatorial Game Theory, which analyzes ideal play in perfect-information games, and Constraint Logic, which provides a framework for showing hardness. Then we survey results about the complexity of determining ideal play in these games, and the related problems of solving puzzles, in terms of both polynomial-time algorithms and computational intractability results. Our review of background and survey of algorithmic results are by no means complete, but should serve as a useful primer. 1 Introduction Many classic games are known to be computationally intractable (assuming P 6= NP): one-player puzzles are often NP-complete (as in Minesweeper) or PSPACE-complete (as in Rush Hour), and two-player games are often PSPACE-complete (as in Othello) or EXPTIME-complete (as in Check- ers, Chess, and Go). Surprisingly, many seemingly simple puzzles and games are also hard. Other results are positive, proving that some games can be played optimally in polynomial time. In some cases, particularly with one-player puzzles, the computationally tractable games are still interesting for humans to play. We begin by reviewing some basics of Combinatorial Game Theory in Section 2, which gives tools for designing algorithms, followed by reviewing the relatively new theory of Constraint Logic in Section 3, which gives tools for proving hardness. -

When you have gone three steps in a straight line, you will reach a square with a number on it, which indicates the second day's journey, as many steps as it tells, in a straight line in any of the eight directions. From this new point when reached, march on again according to the number indicated, and continue on, following the requirements of the numbers reached, until you come upon a square with a number which will carry you just one step beyond the border, when you are supposed to be out of the woods and can holler all you want, as you will have solved the puzzle. In this version some squares are yellow or green. This allowed better explanations how the puzzle worked. The numbers in each square in the grid indicate how many squares you can travel in a straight line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally from that square. For example, if you start in the red square in the center, your first move can take you to any one of the three yellow squares. The green squares are some of the possible squares you could land on for the second move. -

As usual a good number of guests from abroad were welcomed: Dinu-Ioan Nicula (ROM), Aleksander Leontyev (RUS), Andrey Selivanov (RUS), Eric Huber (ROM), Fadil Abdurahmanović (BIH), Iļja Ketris (LAT), Ivan Denkovski (MAK), Kostas Prentos (GRE), Michal Dragoun (CZE), Piotr Murdzia (POL), Valery Kopyl with his lovely daughter Valeria (UKR) and Živko Janevski (MAK). You may have noticed the exception from the alphabetical order of that list, but there is a good reason for it: Dinu-Ioan Nicula is the only foreign composer who has attended all five Festivals, and if he comes again next year the organizers could consider the idea of promoting him into an honorary participant. Anyway, all guests have been treated by the home team in a traditionally warm and friendly way. Le manuel de jeu est un catalogue de formes variées – des silhouettes noires de bonshommes, des chats, des théières, etc. – que l'on doit reconstituer. De prime abord, il s'agit d'une sorte de puzzle destiné à un public assez jeune. Personnellement, je n'ai pas vraiment été attiré par cet aspect traditionnel du jeu mais j'en aimais le concept au point de vouloir m'en fabriquer en bois, en carton... Plus tard, un professeur de technologie de mon entourage qui voulait le faire fabriquer à ses élèves me posa une question au sujet de ce jeu et je commençais, pour lui répondre, à m'intéresser aux formes convexes qui étaient réalisables. Je m'étonnais qu'il n'en existait que treize, et me demandais si avec d'autres pièces on aurait pu en obtenir davantage. Je crayonnais des découpages de carrés et commençais des inventaires, puis je me dis que ce serait plus commode de chercher les formes convexes réalisables avec un jeu en programmant un ordinateur pour cela. -
