Common DIVISION OF ENTOMOLOGY, C.S.I.R.O., CANBERRA Abstract: This is a re-description of Eudoria mawsoni (Womersley and Tindale) —Lepi­ doptera, Pyralidae, Scopariinae—the only endemic moth so far recorded from Macquarie Is­ land, and the only moth breeding for certain on the island. The material dealt with in this study was collected by Messrs. K. C. Watson, J. H. Calaby and Dr. J. L. Gressitt, working at the Australian National Antarctic Research Ex­ pedition Station at Macquarie Island in 1960 and 1961. The pyralid moth, Scoparia mawsoni Womersley and Tindale, was originally described from a small series of poorly preserved adults and a larva collected by the late Prof. T. Harvey Johnston at Macquarie Island in 1930 (Womersley & Tindale, 1937). The condi­ tion of the adult material did not permit a detailed description of the wing pattern and, although the male genitalia were described and figured, the description and figure of the female genitalia was confined to the external structures of the posterior three abdominal segments. The present descriptions are based upon a long series of pinned adults, some of which were reared from pupae. Named adult material collected by Dr. Gressitt is deposited in the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, while the bulk of the adult, larval and pupal material collected by Mr. Watson and Mr. Calaby has been deposited in the Australian National Insect Collection, Division of Entomology Museum, C. S. I. R. O., Canberra. Named adults from this last series have been deposited in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) ; U. S. National Museum; Canadian National Insect Collection; South Australian Museum, Adelaide; National Museum of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Australian Museum, Sydney. Chapman (1911) erected the genus Eudoria to contain certain species, with moss-feed­ ing larvae, previously placed in Scoparia Curtis. He showed that these two genera could be distinguished mainly by the male genitalia, in particular, the form of the uncus and the sacculus and the presence or absence of cornuti in the male aedeagus. In Scoparia, the uncus tapers to the apex, the sacculus terminates in a sharp projection and there are con­ spicuous cornuti on the vesica of the male aedeagus. On the other hand, in Eudoria the uncus is broadly rounded and hood-like, the sacculus has no terminal projection, and the aedeagus is without cornuti. This separation was confirmed by Pierce and Metcalfe (1938). McDunnough (1961) showed that the females of these two genera could be separated ef­ fectively on the form of the ovipositor, which in Eudoria is retractile, with long apophyses posteriores. In Scoparia the ovipositor is non-retractile, the need for well elongated apo­ physes posteriores thus being reduced. 976 Pacific Insects Vol. 4, no. 4 In discussing the distribution of the Scopariinae, Munroe (1958) pointed out that most of the Australian and New Zealand species placed in the genus Scoparia, which he had examined, were in fact referable to Eudoria. The genus is particularly well developed in the Pacific area, although it is apparently absent from temperate South America, where it is replaced by Scoparia. It has been especially successful in colonizing oceanic islands, the species being endemic to the islands on which they occur. E. mawsoni is the only endemic lepidopteron so far recorded from Macquarie Island. Assiduous collecting by Mr. Watson throughout a period of twelve months has failed to disclose any other species breeding naturally on the island. A specimen of Anagasta kueh­ niella (Zell.) was reared from foodstuffs stored at the Station, and specimens of Agrotis ypsilon (Hufn.) were taken at light. Neither of these cosmopolitan species is likely to be established on the island. Eudoria mawsoni (Womersley and Tindale), NEW COMBINATION Scoparia mawsoni Worn. & Tind., 1937, B. A. N. Z. Antarctic Res. Exped., Rep. ser. B, 4: 84, pl. II, figs. a-f. Types: I have examined 5 paratypes preserved in spirit in the South Australian Museum, Adelaide, and labelled "Scoparia mawsoni Tindale, Macquarie Island, Banzare Exped., Swampy Land, 3rd. Dec. 1930, Paratypes." The microscope slide mounts from which Womersley and Tindale's figures were made are also in the South Australian Museum. Male: Head pale ochreous gray, often suffused with gray or white; antenna dark fuscous; maxillary palpus ochreous gray, suffused with fuscous on outer surface, whitish apically; labial palpus with basal segment white, segment 2 gray, fuscous on outer surface, whitish ventrally. Thorax pale ochreous gray, suffused with gray; legs pale ochreous gray, suffused with gray, especially on fore and median tibiae and tarsi, bases of coxae white. Abdomen ochreous gray, paler ventrally. Forewing pale ochreous gray, more or less suf­ fused with gray; a fuscous spot near base, midway between costa and dorsum; an outward­ ly oblique, somewhat sinuous fuscous line from 1/6 costa to 2/5 dorsum, often ill-defined; a prominent dark fuscous oval spot in disc just beyond 1/3; 2 poorly defined oval fuscous, pale-centered spots just beyond 2/5 and at 3/5; an inwardly oblique fuscous sinuous line from costa at 4/5 to dorsum just beyond 3/4; a suffused fuscous area near tornus and an­ other along dorsal 2/3 of termen; cilia pale ochreous gray, basal 1/3 gray. Hindwing gray; cilia ochreous gray, basal 1/4 gray. Female : Similar to 6*, but more heavily suffused with gray and fuscous, with markings consequently less conspicuous. Variation: The general coloration and intensity of the markings vary considerably. Some specimens are predominantly ochreous gray, others have the ochreous gray ground color almost completely obscured by a gray suffusion, while the markings in some are very distinct and in others obsolete. Expanse: & 21.2-26.7 mm, $ 18.6-24.8 mm. Specimens examined: 196 6^6*, 18 ££. Male genitalia (fig. IA) : Uncus broad, apex rounded, clothed with anteriorly direct­ ed hairs; gnathos with short curved arms, uniting to form a tapering acute median process ; valva elongate, dilated and gently rounded distally, sacculus small, without projections; 1962 Common: Scopariinae of Macquarie Island 977 juxta broad and rounded at base, tapering distally; vinculum broadly rounded; aedeagus (fig. IB) long, with parallel sides, gently curved, without cornuti. Fig. 1. Female genitalia (fig. 1C) : Apophyses posteriores as long as apophyses anteriores; ostium bursae greatly reduced, membranous; ductus bursae long, sinuous and coiled once, sclerotized between ostium bursae and junction of ductus seminalis, remainder membranous; corpus bursae spherical with a slightly smaller ovate diverticulum, signum an oval scobinate plate. Comments'. The larva of E. mawsoni was described in detail by Tillyard (1920), although he stated that his larva belonged to the subfamily Crambinae. The larvae ex­ amined by Womersley and Tindale (1937) agreed with Tillyard's description. The larvae 978 Pacific Insects Vol. 4, no. 4 now available are closely similar to Tillyard's specimen, except for the orientation of the crochets of the abdominal prolegs. Tillyard stated that the circlet of triordinal crochets was most complete on its outer side, that is on the side farthest removed from the mid­ line of the abdomen. In the larvae associated with the adults described above, the relative position of the crochets is reversed, the smallest crochets of the group being on the inner side, that is the side nearest the mid-line of the abdomen. The larvae and pupae collected by Watson were mostly associated with mosses, but a few were collected in other situations such as on Colobanthus. Whether these larvae were actually feeding on plants other than mosses is not known. Afterwards, it was only mentioned as a member of Cossidae (Daniel 1955; Schoorl 1990; Yakovlev 2004), and only on the basis of the detailed original description. After a thorough analysis of Koshantschikov's description, Vladimir V. Dubatolov (Novosibirsk, Russia) assumed that the taxon could belong to Brachodidae. The same assumption was admitted by Axel Kallies (Australia). My study of the type material shows that the taxon does in fact belong to Brachodidae and that it is conspecific with Brachodes appendiculata (Esper, 1783), a species known from South and Central Europe, southern Urals, northern Kazakhstan, and southern Siberia (Zagulyaev 1978). Let’s face it, July has been terrible. It’s been the wettest summer on record, and when it hasn’t been raining, it’s usually been cool, windy and grey. There have been very few opportunities to get out and look at insects, so consequently not a great deal has been recorded. But August is looking up, and certainly as I write this on August 1st the sun is shining and the forecast is set fair. In this edition I look at the limited highlights of the last month, as well as continue with the next section of the Pyralid review. I’ll continue doing these over the next few bulletins, and once I’ve finished Pyralids, maybe move on to some other group of micros. Please do take note of the information on National Moth Night (below). If the weather is not too bad, I really hope we can get some good participation and results. Given that so many species emerged very early in April, I am expecting there to be a number of unusual 2nd broods of things during August. If you do note any species that seems unusual at this time of year, I would like to hear about it. Otherwise, good luck all with August mothing, and let’s hope for some nice surprises…. I noticed quite a few Silver Y Autographa gamma at Pembrey by day on 31st July, so maybe there will be a little spell of migration.

Key words: Lepidoptera, Pyralidae, Scoparia ambigualis, Eudonia pallida, ovum, larva. Introduction The ovum of Scoparia ambigualis was described from captive material as long ago as 1901, together with a brief account of the first instar larva. A fuller description was published in 1921. The larva was not found in the wild until 1986, the final instar was not described until 2004 and the other instars do not appear to have been noted until now. The ovum and first and last instars of Eudonia pallida were described from captive material in 1924, but apparently it was not until 2003 that a larva was found in the wild, and was described the following year.This paper provides observations on the ovum and early instars of S. ambigualis and a fuller account of the ovum and instars of E. pallida, noting that in the latter species there is a difference, both in the habits and appearance of the early instars, between those occurring in the autumn to spring and those in the summer. Scoparia ambigualis (Treitschke, 1829) Buckler (1901: 188) appears to have been the first to give an account of the ovum and the first, but no other, instar from ova that he had received on 18 August 1871.

GROWN IN EASTERN COLORADO Industrial hemp was found to support a diverse complex of arthropods in the surveys of hemp fields in eastern Colorado. Seventy-three families of arthropods were collected from hemp grown in eight counties in Colorado in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Other important groups found in collections were of the order Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera. The arthropods present in fields had a range of association with the crop and included herbivores, natural enemies, pollen feeders, and incidental species. Hemp cultivars grown for seed and fiber had higher insect species richness compared to hemp grown for cannabidiol (CBD). This observational field survey of hemp serves as the first checklist of arthropods associated with the crop in eastern Colorado. Emerging key pests of the crop that are described include: corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)), hemp russet mite (Aculops cannibicola (Farkas)), cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis (Passerini)), and Eurasian hemp borer (Grapholita delineana (Walker)). Local outbreaks of several species of grasshoppers were observed and produced significant crop injury, particularly twostriped grasshopper (Melanoplus bivittatus (Say)). Approximately half (46%) of the arthropods collected in sweep net samples during the three year sampling period were categorized as predators, natural enemies of arthropods.

    The Dreaded Scopariinae – some notes on identification. Introduction When you first look at Goater, the initial reaction is that all the Scoparia and Eudonia species look the same! It is perhaps more difficult to put into words how to get past this point than it is to describe how to differentiate particular species pairs. Clues can be obtained from the flight period. Goater states that S. ambigualis is the first species on the wing and some people start by identifying all early Scop’s as this species! This is incorrect however as S. pyralella flies just as early as ambigualis and, in the south, E. angustea flies before either of them! This latter problem is not currently an issue in northern England as angustea is single brooded here and does not appear until late summer. S. ambigualis and S. pyralella both appear in May, ambigualis has a very long flight period and can still be found in August but pyralella is uncommon after the end of June. A similar situation exists with Dipleurina lacustrata and E. mercurella, they both emerge from mid- to late-June onwards but lacustrata peaks quickly and has generally disappeared by the end of July whereas mercurella flies right through into September. E. truncicolella usually appears in late July and is common throughout August in many areas. It is NOT confined to large woodlands as stated in Goater. Faunistic, ecological, biogeographical and taxonomic remarks on 37 species of Pyraloidea (Pyralidae, Crambidae) occurring in Italy are given. Seven of them are recorded for the first time from Italy, namely Aphomia foedella, Hypotia muscosalis, Stemmatophora rungsi, Phycita diaphana, Evergestis alborivulalis, Euclasta splendidalis and Aglossa (Aglossa) rubralis, the last being also new to the European fauna. Full data about the presence of Scoparia ganevi in Italy are provided, and Evergestis nomadalis in the Italian Peninsula is confirmed. The occurrence of Aglossa (Aglossa) asiatica or a close relative in Sardinia is shown. Several other species are firstly recorded from at least a main Italian geographic district. Records presented for Herpetogramma licarsisalis, Spoladea recurvalis and Cathayia insularum, all of economic importance, contribute to assess the routes of colonization in Italy of these invasive species, the last of which trophically linked to ornamental palms. Study of the types of Titanio cinerealis Della Beffa, 1941 showed that the relevant name neither enters into synonymy with Metaxmeste phrygialis (Hübner, 1796) nor refers to any species of Metaxmeste Hübner, 1825, but it is a junior synonym of Orenaia helveticalis (Herrich-Schäffer, 1851) (syn. n.).
